SUMMARY:The Sutra of Aspirations for Excellent Conduct Session 4
DESCRIPTION:Thaye Dorje\, His Holiness the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa explains the importance of the Five Royal Sutras that make up the paths of practice. Among them\, the Sutra of Aspirations for Excellent Conduct\, also known as Samantabadhra’s Wishing Prayer\, represents the path of aspiration. The bodhisattva Samantabhadra’s wishing prayers are a model for all to follow. They are recited regularly by practitioners of all traditions and are a path that\, as Karmapa says\, “is a way of consciously dreaming.” \nAfter having clarified the meaning of the Heart Sutra\, which presents the path of view\, Trinlay Rinpoche will begin the detailed explanation of the second of the Five Royal Sutras. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Trinlay Rinpoche\, born in 1975\, was recognized as a tülku—manifestation of a Buddhist master—by the 16th Karmapa (1923–1981 C.E.). He brings together a Western academic education and in-depth Buddhist training under the guidance of eminent masters like the 14th Shamarpa. His dual culture\, his mastery of three languages (English\, French\, and Tibetan)\, and his ability to communicate the depth of Buddhist thought in an accessible way make him an exceptional teacher. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Important\n•  Translations: This teaching is given in French. SUMMARY:Saraha: A Poetic Awakening
DESCRIPTION:Saraha\, a great practitioner of Tantric Buddhism\, is one of the most emblematic figures of late first-millennium India\, a time of flourishing religious and literary activity. \nHe lived a nontraditional Buddhist life and taught in an equally unconventional way\, through spontaneous songs. Sometimes esoteric\, sometimes playful\, the adamantine songs express Saraha’s view on the nature of mind\, on the importance of the lama\, on society\, and on other themes. \nOver these two days\, Lara Braitstein introduces us to the life and poetry of Saraha. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Lara Braitstein is the author of The Adamantine Songs: Study\, Translation\, and Critical Tibetan Edition (Rabsel Editions\, 2018)\, a study of the Mahamudra songs composed by Saraha in the 9th century. She is a professor at McGill University (Montreal\, Canada)\, where she teaches Indian and Tibetan Buddhism. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Information\n• This teaching is given in English and translated into French. SUMMARY:Detailed Differentiation between the Three Disciplines Part 3
DESCRIPTION:In this work\, Sakya Pandita Künga Gyaltsen (1182–1251)\, one of the founding fathers of the Sakya lineage and an eminent teacher respected by all traditions of Tibetan Buddhism\, presents the three disciplines (dom sum) that support Buddhist practice: the discipline of individual liberation\, of a bodhisattva\, and of the vajrayana. The precepts of each are explained\, as well as the apparent contradictions between their different levels. Knowledge of the various disciplines associated with Buddhist practice is a prerequisite for anyone who seriously undertakes the path. \nLama Jampa\, with his rich heritage from both the Sakya and Kagyü lineages\, will explain this text and clarify the divergent views concerning certain points. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Lama Jampa Thaye is a scholar and meditation master in the Sakya and Karma Kagyü traditions. By examining our situation\, we become aware of our inner richness as well as what obstructs it. Relying on the teachings received\, we cultivate a quality of presence toward ourselves and others. Through a progressive dynamic combining teachings\, guided meditations\, and discussion\, Lama Jigme Rinpoche shows us how to cultivate the qualities that enrich our daily life and support the path toward liberation—starting where we are.\nDuring each retreat\, Rinpoche addresses a specific theme of Buddhism that opens onto a daily practice grounded in clarity and compassion.\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Lama Jigme Rinpoche was born in eastern Tibet in 1949. He received the entirety of his spiritual education from the 16th Karmapa\, Rangjung Rigpe Dorje\, who he stayed with for numerous years of his training. After fifty years of tireless activity to make the Buddha’s message accessible in Europe\, Rinpoche has acquired a thorough knowledge of Westerners. His example and his accessible teaching inspire all those who meet him around the world. He is the 16th Karmapa’s representative in Europe and the author of numerous works. Some of his teachings are available on Dhagpo Kagyu Ling’s YouTube channel and as booklets. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Teachers\nLama Jigme Rinpoche and the Institute’s Students\n \n \n \n \n \n Information\n• Course begins: Thursday\, August 13 at 10:30 am• Translation: this teaching is given in English and translated into French. SUMMARY:Victorious Meditation: Essential Instructions from The Samadhi Raja Sutra
DESCRIPTION:Meditation is often spoken of as a single\, uniform practice\, whereas in reality there are countless meditative techniques aimed at different goals. In Buddhism\, meditation is a tool for progressing toward a freedom that goes beyond simple relaxation. \nHowever\, for real progress to occur\, these methods must be combined with a deep understanding of how our mind functions and how we perceive the world. Phakchok Rinpoche explains how to acquire this right view. \nThe aim is to practice a form of meditation that has a genuine impact on our lives\, allowing us to evolve beyond all our dissatisfactions. To support his teaching\, Phakchok Rinpoche draws on the Samadhi Raja Sutra\, one of the major teachings of the Mahayana Buddhist tradition\, which shows how the combination of key factors such as bodhicitta and the practice of the paramitas is necessary for this process to be deeply transformative. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Phakchok Rinpoche belongs to the new generation of Tibetan Buddhist masters. Born in 1981\, he is recognized as the seventh Phakchok Rinpoche\, the incarnation of an eminent teacher and meditation master. He received ordination from His Holiness the Dalai Lama and underwent extensive training in Buddhist philosophy and meditation\, studying with some of the most accomplished masters of modern times. \nHis main teachers were his grandfather\, Kyapje Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche\, and Nyoshul Khen Rinpoche. He completed his education at the Dzongsar Institute of Advanced Buddhist Studies in Bir\, India\, where he received the title of Khenpo. He travels worldwide\, teaching in Buddhist centers\, universities\, and monasteries\, from Asia to the United States\, from South Africa to Europe. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Information\n• Course begins: Saturday\, August 29 at 10 am• Translation: this teaching is given in Tibetan and translated into French. SUMMARY:The Sutra of Aspirations for Excellent Conduct Session 5
DESCRIPTION:Thaye Dorje\, His Holiness the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa\, explained the importance of the Five Royal Sutras that constitute paths of practice. Among them\, the Sutra of Aspirations for Excellent Conduct\, also known as Samantabhadra’s Wishing Prayer\, represents the path of aspiration. The bodhisattva Samantabhadra’s prayers are a model for all. \nRecited regularly by practitioners of all traditions\, they form a path that\, as the Karmapa says\, “is a way of consciously dreaming.” After clarifying the meaning of the Heart Sutra\, which presents the path of view\, Thinley Rinpoche continues the detailed explanation of the second of the Five Royal Sutras. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Thinley Rinpoche\, born in 1975\, was recognized as a tülku—manifestation of a Buddhist master—by the 16th Karmapa (1924–1981). He combines a Western academic education with in-depth Buddhist training under the guidance of great masters such as the 14th Shamarpa. His dual culture\, his mastery of three languages (English\, French\, and Tibetan)\, and his ability to communicate the depth of Buddhist thought in an accessible way make him an exceptional teacher.\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Information\n• Translation: this teaching is given in French.
