He was recognized by the 16th Karmapa and remained close to the Karmapa until he turned eighteen\, when he moved to Ladakh to study and later accomplish a three-year retreat during which he practiced the six yogas of Naropa. He also received numerous other transmission\, notably from Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche. At twenty-five years old\, he was enthroned as the vajra master (dorje lopon) of Rumtek Monastery in Sikkim\, India.
