Block by block, day after day, the Institute\u2019s Residences are rising from the ground of the construction site at Dhagpo Kagyu Ling in Dordogne.<\/p>\n

In groups of twenty, practitioners taking part in the recent teaching given by His Eminence Jamgon Kongrul Rinpoche (August 15 \u2013 18) crossed the gates of the construction site to discover work in progress during visits guided and commented by Guillaume Pares-Amado, the project manager who settled near Dhagpo Kagyu Ling over ten years ago.<\/p>\n

Extending beyond the Sukhavati Garden, the Institute\u2019s Residences are in line with the five resources set out by the16th Karmapa Rangjung Rigpe Dorje for Dharma to take root in the West:<\/p>\n

1. access points for learning about the Buddha\u2019s teachings and meditation
2. Institutes for acquiring precise knowledge of the teachings
3. a network of libraries to preserve and make accessible Buddhist texts in different formats (traditional pecha style, book, digital, etc)
4. retreat centers for deepening meditative practice
5. monastic and secular living environments for those wishing to experience or dedicate their lives to this path.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a place where practitioners will be able to experience community life through the three aspects of practice, namely study, meditation and participation in the center\u2019s daily activity,\u201d Guillaume explains.<\/p>\n

Started in May 2023, the digging of the foundations is now complete, though it was not without challenges. \u201cWe found the soil to be very heterogeneous, which required us to create special foundations adapted to it,\u201d explains Guillaume. Indeed, small cavities and clay veins within a large limestone plateau created long-term risk of water infiltration, which would have caused erosion and subsidence of the structure. Then the team came across some very hard limestone areas where digging was not possible, forcing further adaptations of the building to the natural profile of the limestone plateau.<\/p>\n

Treading across rocky terrain, visitors to the site were able to observe the lower section of the structure, which includes 420 m2<\/sup>of dry and airtight storage space beneath the residences. Such spaces are sorely lacking at Dhagpo and will be used to store furniture, carpets, shelves, archives and tools.<\/p>\n

This work is part of the ongoing first phase of the project, which will be complete when the floors of the ground level are laid.<\/p>\n

Lama Jigme Rinpoche is following the development and evolution of the project closely. The cloistered layout of the residences is inspired by traditional monasteries, with rooms arranged around a central courtyard and garden. This layout is designed to facilitate exchange and encourage a community dynamic. The residences have 27 rooms of 20 m2<\/sup> each, including two for people with reduced mobility \u2014 each with bathroom, desk and meditative practice space. The complex includes a 70 m2<\/sup> common room and laundry facilities.<\/p>\n

A Project in the Spirit of Sustainability and Ethics<\/h2>\n

\u201cThe building is designed to last as long as possible,\u201d the project manager explains to site visitors. To this end, for example, special concrete mixes are used that have a lifespan well beyond the seventy to eighty years of those generally employed for a house. In the choice of materials, the emphasis is on quality, with a preference for local production when it meets this criterion.<\/p>\n

Energy autonomy is a key component of the project, with the production of hot water and heating using thermal solar panels, backed up by a woodchip boiler. The project also includes the installation of storage tanks for rainwater collected from the roofs of the buildings, which can be used to water Dhagpo’s green spaces, particularly during periods of drought. Also, in anticipation of rising temperatures and to guard against possible water shortages, a filtration system will be installed to treat the water in the tanks in order to make it drinkable and usable for all the daily needs of the residences and their inhabitants.<\/p>\n

Working conditions are designed to be people first, with strict compliance to the legal framework of the French labor code and the application of all safety and prevention measures designed to protect the health of those involved. Every day, between eight to fifteen people work on the site. Half of them are connected to Dhagpo, having either been volunteers over a certain period or residents, enabling the project to be carried out by people who are sensitive to its meaning. On-site travel and lunch are provided, and measures in place to adapt to weather predictions. These conditions also aim to encourage the construction team to stay over the long term as this facilitates the project\u2019s implementation. There are no volunteers on the site.<\/p>\n

Bloc par bloc, jour apr\u00e8s jour, le chantier des R\u00e9sidences de l\u2019Institut sort de terre \u00e0 Dhagpo Kagyu Ling en Dordogne.<\/p>

Par groupes de vingt, des pratiquants participant au stage r\u00e9cent (du 15 au 18 ao\u00fbt) de Son \u00c9minence Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoch\u00e9 ont franchi la grille du chantier, en pause estivale, pour d\u00e9couvrir l\u2019avanc\u00e9e des travaux, lors de visites guid\u00e9es et comment\u00e9es par le ma\u00eetre d\u2019\u0153uvre, Guillaume Pares-Amado, install\u00e9 dans les environs de Dhagpo Kagyu Ling depuis plus de dix ans.<\/p>

Situ\u00e9es dans le prolongement du Jardin de Sukhavati, les R\u00e9sidences de l\u2019Institut s\u2019inscrivent dans les cinq ressources n\u00e9cessaires \u00e0 l\u2019implantation du Dharma en Occident, telles que le XVIe<\/sup> Karmapa, Rangjung Rigp\u00e9 Dorj\u00e9 les a pr\u00e9cis\u00e9es :<\/p>

1.- des points d\u2019acc\u00e8s pour apprendre l\u2019enseignement du Bouddha et la m\u00e9ditation ;
2.- des instituts pour acqu\u00e9rir une connaissance pr\u00e9cise de l\u2019enseignement ;
3.- un r\u00e9seau de biblioth\u00e8ques pour pr\u00e9server et rendre accessibles les textes sous diff\u00e9rentes formes, livres, supports num\u00e9riques etc. ;
4.- des centres de retraite pour approfondir la pratique m\u00e9ditative ;
5.- des environnements adapt\u00e9s pour celles et ceux qui souhaitent s\u2019essayer \u00e0 ce chemin ou y consacrer leur vie, qu\u2019elle soit monastique ou s\u00e9culi\u00e8re.<\/p>

Guillaume explique : \u00ab C\u2019est un lieu o\u00f9 les pratiquants pourront venir exp\u00e9rimenter la vie communautaire au travers des trois aspects de la pratique que sont l\u2019\u00e9tude, la m\u00e9ditation et la participation quotidienne \u00e0 l\u2019activit\u00e9 du lieu. \u00bb<\/p>

Commenc\u00e9 en mai 2023, le creusement des fondations est d\u00e9sormais achev\u00e9, non sans d\u00e9fis. \u00ab Nous avons trouv\u00e9 un sol tr\u00e8s h\u00e9t\u00e9rog\u00e8ne qui nous a impos\u00e9 la r\u00e9alisation de fondations particuli\u00e8res adapt\u00e9es \u00e0 ce sol \u00bb explique le ma\u00eetre d\u2019\u0153uvre. En effet, de petites cavit\u00e9s et des veines d\u2019argile au sein d\u2019un grand plateau calcaire faisaient courir le risque, \u00e0 terme, que l\u2019eau ne s\u2019y infiltre, causant \u00e9rosion et affaissement. Puis l\u2019\u00e9quipe a rencontr\u00e9 des points de calcaire tr\u00e8s durs o\u00f9 il n\u2019\u00e9tait pas possible de creuser, obligeant d\u2019autres adaptations du b\u00e2timent au profil naturel du plateau calcaire.<\/p>

Acc\u00e9dant au chantier par un terrain rocailleux, les visiteurs ont pu en observer les soubassements qui comprennent 420 m2<\/sup> d\u2019espaces de stockage sains situ\u00e9s sous les r\u00e9sidences. De tels espaces font grandement d\u00e9faut \u00e0 Dhagpo et pourront \u00eatre utilis\u00e9s pour abriter tr\u00f4nes, tapis, tablettes, mais aussi archives et outils.<\/p>

Ces travaux font partie de la premi\u00e8re phase du chantier, encore en cours, qui se terminera par la mise en \u0153uvre des planchers du rez-de-chauss\u00e9e.<\/p>

Gen\u00e8se et \u00e9volution du projet sont suivies de pr\u00e8s par lama Jigm\u00e9 Rinpoch\u00e9. Le plan des r\u00e9sidences, en forme de clo\u00eetre, s\u2019inspire des monast\u00e8res traditionnels avec des chambres dispos\u00e9es autour d\u2019une cour centrale et d\u2019un jardin. Cette disposition a pour but de faciliter les \u00e9changes et de privil\u00e9gier une dynamique communautaire. Les r\u00e9sidences comptent 27 chambres de 20 m2<\/sup> chacune, dont deux pour personne \u00e0 mobilit\u00e9 r\u00e9duite, chacune avec salle de bain, bureau et espace de pratique m\u00e9ditative. L\u2019ensemble comprend une salle commune de 70 m2<\/sup> et une buanderie.<\/p>

Dans ce but, par exemple, des compositions de b\u00e9ton particuli\u00e8res sont utilis\u00e9es avec une dur\u00e9e de vie allant bien au-del\u00e0 des 70 \u00e0 80 ans habituels pour une maison. Dans le choix des mat\u00e9riaux, la qualit\u00e9 est privil\u00e9gi\u00e9e, avec une pr\u00e9f\u00e9rence pour la production locale lorsque celle-ci satisfait le crit\u00e8re de durabilit\u00e9.<\/p>

L\u2019autonomie \u00e9nerg\u00e9tique est une composante phare du projet avec eau chaude et chauffage produits par des panneaux solaires thermiques et, en appoint, une chaudi\u00e8re \u00e0 plaquettes de bois.<\/p>

Par ailleurs, le projet pr\u00e9voit l\u2019installation de cuves de stockage d\u2019eau de pluie r\u00e9cup\u00e9r\u00e9e sur les toitures des b\u00e2timents qui pourra \u00eatre utilis\u00e9e pour l\u2019arrosage des espaces verts de Dhagpo, notamment pendant les p\u00e9riodes de s\u00e9cheresse. Aussi, en pr\u00e9vision d\u2019une hausse des temp\u00e9ratures et pour se pr\u00e9munir contre d\u2019\u00e9ventuelles p\u00e9nuries d\u2019eau, un syst\u00e8me de filtration sera install\u00e9 qui permettra de traiter l\u2019eau dans les cuves afin de la rendre potable et utilisable pour tous les besoins quotidiens des logements et de leurs r\u00e9sidents.<\/p>

Les conditions de travail mettent \u00ab l\u2019humain au centre \u00bb avec un respect strict du cadre l\u00e9gal propos\u00e9 par le code du travail et l\u2019application de toutes les mesures de s\u00e9curit\u00e9 et de pr\u00e9vention visant \u00e0 prot\u00e9ger la sant\u00e9 des intervenants. Chaque jour, entre 8 et 15 intervenants travaillent sur le chantier. La moiti\u00e9 d\u2019entre eux ont un lien avec Dhagpo, en ayant \u00e9t\u00e9 soit stagiaires soit r\u00e9sidents, ce qui permet la r\u00e9alisation du chantier par des intervenants sensibles au sens du projet. D\u00e9placements sur le chantier et repas de midi sur place sont assur\u00e9s, avec mesures d\u2019adaptabilit\u00e9 selon la m\u00e9t\u00e9o. Ces conditions visent aussi \u00e0 inciter les membres de l\u2019\u00e9quipe \u00e0 s\u2019engager sur le long terme afin de simplifier la mise en \u0153uvre du projet. Il n\u2019y a aucun b\u00e9n\u00e9vole sur le chantier.<\/p>
