In a highly symbolic moment marking the Church\u2019s openness to a Buddhist presence on European soil<\/strong>, Pope Paul VI met with the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa Rangjung Rigpe Dorje at the Vatican, in Rome, on January 17, 1975.<\/p>\n

Welcoming the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa, the Pope stated<\/strong> that \u201cthe Second Vatican Council expressed admiration for Buddhism in its various forms and for the contribution it makes to the spiritual elevation of man.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Pope explained that the Vatican had established a Secretariat to promote relations and dialogue with non-Christian religions and that \u201cthe sons and daughters of the Catholic Church are increasingly open to friendly cooperation with the followers of them for the promotion of peace.\u201d<\/p>\n

He concluded by affirming that \u201call moral and religious progress is a contribution to Peace. We all, after all, are pilgrims toward the Absolute and the Eternal, which alone can satisfy, completely, the human heart.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lama Jigme Rinpoche,<\/strong> who was present, stresses the importance of this audience<\/strong>, which \u201copened the door\u201d for the Karma Kagyu school of Buddhism to take root in Europe.<\/p>\n

The possibility for such a meeting was hatched in the early 1970s, when the King of Sikkim, at the time an independent kingdom, invited the Pope\u2019s foreign secretary and president of the Pontifical Council for Inter-religious Dialogue, Archbishop Sergio Pignedoli, to meet the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa in Sikkim. As he was in India at the time, he accepted the invitation, met the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa, and offered to facilitate an audience with the Pope should he travel to Europe. Archbishop Pignedoli, who was appointed Cardinal in 1973, was also present at the Vatican meeting.<\/p>\n

Le pape a expliqu\u00e9 que le Vatican avait cr\u00e9\u00e9 un secr\u00e9tariat charg\u00e9 de promouvoir les relations et le dialogue avec les religions non chr\u00e9tiennes, ajoutant ceci : \u00ab les fils et les filles de l\u2019\u00c9glise catholique sont de plus en plus ouverts \u00e0 une coop\u00e9ration amicale avec les adeptes de ces religions pour la promotion de la paix. \u00bb<\/p>

Il a conclu en affirmant : \u00ab Tout progr\u00e8s moral et religieux est une contribution \u00e0 la paix. Nous sommes tous, apr\u00e8s tout, des p\u00e8lerins vers l\u2019absolu et l\u2019\u00e9ternel, qui seuls peuvent satisfaire pleinement le c\u0153ur humain. \u00bb<\/p>

Lama Jigm\u00e9 Rinpoch\u00e9, qui \u00e9tait pr\u00e9sent, souligne l\u2019importance de cette audience, qui a \u00ab ouvert la porte \u00bb \u00e0 l\u2019enracinement de l\u2019\u00e9cole bouddhiste karma kagyu en Europe.<\/p>

La possibilit\u00e9 d\u2019une telle rencontre a vu le jour au d\u00e9but des ann\u00e9es 1970, lorsque le roi du Sikkim, \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9poque un royaume ind\u00e9pendant, a invit\u00e9 le secr\u00e9taire aux affaires \u00e9trang\u00e8res du pape et pr\u00e9sident du Conseil pontifical pour le dialogue interreligieux, Mgr Sergio Pignedoli, \u00e0 rencontrer le XVIe<\/sup> Gyalwa Karmapa au Sikkim. Comme il se trouvait en Inde \u00e0 ce moment-l\u00e0, il a accept\u00e9 l\u2019invitation, a rencontr\u00e9 le XVIe Gyalwa Karmapa et a propos\u00e9 de faciliter une audience avec le pape s\u2019il se rendait en Europe. L\u2019archev\u00eaque Pignedoli, nomm\u00e9 cardinal en 1973, \u00e9tait \u00e9galement pr\u00e9sent \u00e0 la r\u00e9union au Vatican.<\/p>
