After his first European tour,<\/strong> Thaye Dorje, His Holiness the 17th Karmapa, travelled to Dhagpo Kundreul Ling<\/strong> in the Auvergne region where he stayed in retreat from February 6 to June 8, 2000<\/strong> to pursue his education alongside His Holiness the 14th K\u00fcnzig Shamarpa, Mipham Ch\u00f6kyi Lodr\u00f6 (1952-2014). Just as the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa had done for him, a generation later, Shamarpa in turn took care of the young 17th Karmapa\u2019s education.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This uninterrupted continuity<\/strong> of transmission of methods leading to liberation from suffering and to enlightenment are held in a pure manner by what is known as the Golden Rosary of the Karma Kagyu lineage<\/strong>. The Kagyu lineage emphasizes the continuity of oral instructions transmitted from master to disciple. The literal meaning of the term \u201cKagyu\u201d reflects this.<\/p>\n

The first syllable \u201cKa\u201d \u0f56\u0f40\u0f60<\/strong> refers to the words of the Buddha and to the oral instructions of the accomplished master. This term designates both the enlightened meaning transmitted by the teacher\u2019s words, as well as the blessing that these terms carry. The second syllable, \u201cgy\u00fc\u201d \u0f56\u0f62\u0f92\u0fb1\u0f74\u0f51\u0f0b<\/strong> refers to lineage or tradition. Together, these two syllables mean \u201cthe lineage of oral instructions.\u201d<\/p>\n

The lineage can be traced back to the source of enlightenment and to the historical Shakyamuni<\/strong> Buddha; it reached Tibet through Marpa (1012-1097). The lineage then established itself over the centuries and through generations who transmitted these methods by \u201cword of mouth\u201d until the present. The 14th Shamarpa<\/strong> is thus part of this unbroken continuity, just as the 17th Karmapa<\/strong> is today. As he himself declared:<\/p>\n

\u201cAs Karmapa, I will continue to protect and preserve our beloved lineage.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

Shamarpa therefore ensured that all the Karma Kagyu teachings<\/strong>, instructions and empowerments were passed on in an authentic manner to the 17th Karmapa, both in terms of the transmission of philosophical scriptural sources and the most profound practices of Mahamudra and Vajrayana in general.<\/p>\n

During his retreat at Kundreul Ling, Karmapa received various teachings and transmissions from several lineage holders, as we shall see in different articles over this year.<\/p>\n

Shamarpa<\/strong> conferred on Karmapa the extensive empowerments of two principal <\/span>yidams<\/span><\/i>, Dorje Phagmo and Korlo Demchok; the ritual reading of <\/span>Chakchen Gyazhung<\/span><\/i>, which is the collection of Indian Mahamudra texts compiled by the 7th Karmapa Chodrak Gyamtso (1454-1506); the collection of initiations entitled <\/span>Chik Sh\u00e9 K\u00fcn Dr\u00f6l <\/span><\/i>(Knowing one thing, all is liberated) compiled by the 9th Karmapa Wangchuk Dorje (1556-1603).<\/span><\/p>\n

That these transmissions from a Shamarpa to a Karmapa take place on French soil, thousands of miles from the places where they were originally conferred and practiced, is exceptional in many ways. This moment in the history of the lineage whereby a Karmapa receives anew the methods of liberation also means that, thanks to Shamarpa\u2019s generosity, an awakened blessing is anchored in Dhagpo Kundreul Ling.<\/span><\/p>\n

To mark this event, on February 6th, the extensive ritual of Dorj\u00e9 Pamo will be performed throughout the day in two locations: at the Institute of Dhagpo Kagyu Ling<\/strong> and in the temple of Dhagpo Kundreul Ling.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Cette continuit\u00e9 ininterrompue<\/strong> de transmission des m\u00e9thodes conduisant \u00e0 la lib\u00e9ration du mal-\u00eatre et \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9veil sont d\u00e9tenues de fa\u00e7on pure par ce qui est appel\u00e9 le Rosaire d\u2019or de la lign\u00e9e karma kagy\u00fc<\/strong>. La lign\u00e9e kagy\u00fc met l'accent sur la continuit\u00e9 des instructions orales transmises de ma\u00eetre \u00e0 disciple. Le sens litt\u00e9ral du terme \u00ab kagy\u00fc \u00bb refl\u00e8te d\u2019ailleurs cela. <\/span><\/p>

La premi\u00e8re syllabe \u00ab ka \u00bb \u0f56\u0f40\u0f60\u0f0b<\/strong> fait r\u00e9f\u00e9rence aux paroles du Bouddha et aux instructions orales du ma\u00eetre accompli. Ce terme d\u00e9signe \u00e0 la fois le sens \u00e9veill\u00e9 transmis par les mots de l'enseignant, ainsi que la b\u00e9n\u00e9diction que ces termes v\u00e9hiculent. La deuxi\u00e8me syllabe, \u00ab gy\u00fc \u00bb \u0f56\u0f62\u0f92\u0fb1\u0f74\u0f51\u0f0b<\/strong> signifie lign\u00e9e ou tradition. Ensemble, ces deux syllabes signifient \u00ab la lign\u00e9e des instructions orales \u00bb.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

La lign\u00e9e remonte aux sources de l\u2019\u00e9veil et au Bouddha historique Shakyamuni<\/strong> ; elle est parvenue au Tibet par l'interm\u00e9diaire de Marpa (1012-1097). Elle s\u2019est ensuite \u00e9tablie au cours des si\u00e8cles et des g\u00e9n\u00e9rations qui ont transmis ses m\u00e9thodes de \u00ab bouche \u00e0 oreille \u00bb jusqu\u2019\u00e0 aujourd\u2019hui. Shamarpa s\u2019est donc assur\u00e9 que l\u2019ensemble des enseignements, instructions et initiations<\/strong> karma kagy\u00fc soient transf\u00e9r\u00e9s de mani\u00e8re authentique au XVII<\/span>e<\/span><\/sup> Karmapa, tant au niveau des transmissions des sources scripturaires philosophiques que de celles des pratiques les plus profondes du mahamudra et du vajrayana en g\u00e9n\u00e9ral.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Au cours de la retraite<\/strong> qu\u2019il a effectu\u00e9e \u00e0 Kundreul Ling, Karmapa a re\u00e7u divers enseignements et transmissions de plusieurs d\u00e9tenteurs de lign\u00e9e, comme nous le verrons au fil de diff\u00e9rents articles. <\/span><\/p>

Que ces transmissions d\u2019un Shamarpa \u00e0 un Karmapa se d\u00e9roulent sur le sol fran\u00e7ais, \u00e0 des milliers de kilom\u00e8tres des lieux o\u00f9 elles ont \u00e9t\u00e9 initialement conf\u00e9r\u00e9es et pratiqu\u00e9es est exceptionnel \u00e0 bien des \u00e9gards.
