Gendun Rinpoche, who had himself spent some thirty years in retreat, insisted on <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the importance of longterm retreats, which allow for the states of meditative absorption without which realization is not possible.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>In this pioneering period<\/strong> of the Buddha Dharma\u2019s arrival in the West, setting up traditional three-year retreats allowed for <strong>planting the seeds<\/strong> for intensive practice of the methods that liberate. Gendun Rinpoche also emphasized<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the motivation of those who participate in building retreat centers. They must do so for the benefit of beings. Otherwise, construction will not be able to be completed.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Practitioners living at Dhagpo expressed their interest in accomplishing such a retreat to Gendun Rinpoche and in helping to build a dedicated center. Having been moved by the coming out of retreat in Plaige at Kalu Rinpoche\u2019s center, Fran\u00e7ois Theaux, who was twenty-seven at the time, was the first to request participating, though he admits with humor that he had some doubts leading up to the day itself.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though the retreat center did not yet exist,<strong> spiritual preparation<\/strong> began immediately. In September 1981, <strong>Shamar Rinpoche gave<\/strong> Dorje Pamo, Korlo Demchok, and Mahakala <strong>empowerments<\/strong> to the retreat applicants along with several public teachings. He notably transmitted <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mahamudra, Pointing Out the Dharmakaya<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chakchen ch\u00f6ku dzuptsup<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u0f55\u0fb1\u0f42\u0f0b\u0f46\u0f7a\u0f53\u0f0b\u0f46\u0f7c\u0f66\u0f0b\u0f66\u0f90\u0f74\u0f0b\u0f58\u0f5b\u0f74\u0f56\u0f0b\u0f5a\u0f74\u0f42\u0f66\u0f0d), by the 9th Karmapa, Wangchuk Dorje, which is <strong>one of the essential texts on Mahamudra<\/strong>. He also explained the fundamental texts by the 3rd Karmapa Rangjung Dorje, which are a prerequisite for approaching the view that underlies the practice of the Buddhist tantras:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The treatise entitled <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Revealing the Essence of the Tathagatha<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dezhin shekpa nyingpo tenpa zhejawa tench\u00f6<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u0f51\u0f7a\u0f0b\u0f56\u0f5e\u0f72\u0f53\u0f0b\u0f42\u0f64\u0f7a\u0f42\u0f66\u0f0b\u0f54\u0f60\u0f72\u0f0b\u0f66\u0f99\u0f72\u0f44\u0f0b\u0f54\u0f7c\u0f0b\u0f56\u0f66\u0f9f\u0f53\u0f0b\u0f54\u0f0b\u0f5e\u0f7a\u0f66\u0f0b\u0f56\u0fb1\u0f0b\u0f56\u0f60\u0f72\u0f0b\u0f56\u0f66\u0f9f\u0f53\u0f0b\u0f56\u0f45\u0f7c\u0f66\u0f0d)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Treatise that Distinguishes Object-Oriented Knowledge from Primordiale Knowledge <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Namsh\u00e9 Yesh\u00e9 J\u00e9p\u00e9 tench\u00f6<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u0f62\u0fa3\u0f58\u0f0b\u0f64\u0f7a\u0f66\u0f0b\u0f61\u0f7a\u0f0b\u0f64\u0f7a\u0f66\u0f0b\u0f60\u0f56\u0fb1\u0f7a\u0f51\u0f0b\u0f54\u0f60\u0f72\u0f0b\u0f56\u0f66\u0f9f\u0f53\u0f0b\u0f56\u0f45\u0f7c\u0f66\u0f0d)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Tenga Rinpoche<\/strong> gave them the explanation of Mahakala practice and Dorje Pamo practice in October of that same year. Furthermore, as Lama Namgyal recalls, \u201cWe learned Tibetan\u2014because it was important to know how to read very well and how to play the musical instruments for the rituals. <strong>Lama Gendun<\/strong> gave teachings ceaselessly and many empowerments.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But they still needed the place. Administrative difficulties hindered getting a building permit on the C\u00f4te de Jor. Research in a radius around Dhagpo Kagyu Ling extending as far as Sarlat failed. Then, an occasion presented itself elsewhere, in Auvergne, where <strong>Arnaud Desjardins<\/strong>\u2014an author and filmmaker who introduced the public to the wisdom of Tibetan masters\u2014offered very favorable conditions&nbsp; for <strong>the acquisition of buildings in Le Bost<\/strong>, where he had a center for teachings and meditation. There was a strong spiritual imprint there, and he wished for it to be an authentic place for the Dharma. <strong>The 16th Karmapa<\/strong> had been received there in 1977 and had carried out the Black Crown Ceremony. <strong>Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche<\/strong> and Dujom Rinpoche had also stayed there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>A first house was bought in late 1983<\/strong>, and the future retreat participants quickly set to work preparing the building\u2014setting up individual rooms, the temples, the enclosure walls, and the boundary between the men\u2019s and women\u2019s retreat center. Events occurred in quick succession. <strong>In late February 1984<\/strong>, Kundreul Ling invited the local authorities to visit the site and Gendun Rinpoche gave a short teaching. \u201cOn March 7; the Tibetan New Year; <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Losar<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an open house was organized and despite the cool weather, the day allowed for meeting the retreat participants and presenting the Karma Kagyu school to them. Gendun Rinpoche conferred monastic disciplines upon the retreat participants. During this time, a new team of residents settled in at Dhagpo Kagyu Ling to take care of the center following the retreat participants departure,\u201d we can read in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tendrel<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> magazine issue number six (July 1984).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the day itself, <strong>Lama Teunsang, Lama Pema Dorje, and Lama Purtsela were present for the entry into retreat<\/strong>. Lama Namgyal recalls, \u201cWe knew each other well because we had lived together at Dhagpo for at least four years. We were a very united group, and we had such devotion for Lama Gendun.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>The first year,<\/strong> the retreat focused on the preliminaries, Lojong, shine, and lhaktong, <strong>the second year<\/strong> on Dorje Pamo practice, and <strong>the third<\/strong> on Naropa\u2019s six yogas. Lama Gendun specified, \u201cI go to the retreat center every month to see what\u2019s new and measure the progress of practice. Each person relates their experiences, and, according to this, gradually, the teachings are given.\u201d (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tendrel<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Issue 7, 1985). Additionally, the retreatants received a visit from <strong>Pawo Rinpoche and Kalu Rinpoche<\/strong> in 1984, and <strong>Shamar Rinpoche<\/strong> came twice over the course of the retreat, while Situ Rinpoche and Lama Teunsang each came once.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thinking back on this time and the evolution of the place since then, Fran\u00e7ois Theaux, a member of this first retreat, remembers, \u201cWe didn\u2019t realize the scope of what was happening and what it would become. Gendun Rinpoche and Lama Jigmela had the vision for what was to come. A wish resonates; it grows.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since that date, &nbsp;<strong>eleven cycles of<\/strong> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>three-year retreats have taken place<\/strong> at Dhagpo Kundreul Ling, marking a decisive step for <strong>the establishment of Dharma in the West.<br \/><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the course of establishing the Dharma in the West, as generations of retreatants succeeded one another, it became clear that a solid foundation in knowledge of the Buddha\u2019s teaching constitutes an indispensable basis for this type of intensive practice. De plus, comme se souvient Lama Namgyal : \u00ab on apprenait le tib\u00e9tain car il fallait savoir tr\u00e8s bien le lire et \u00e0 jouer les instruments de musique pour les rituels. <strong>Lama Guendune<\/strong> donnait sans arr\u00eat des enseignements et beaucoup d\u2019initiations. \u00bb<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mais encore fallait-il un lieu. Des difficult\u00e9s administratives freinent l\u2019obtention d\u2019un permis de construire sur la C\u00f4te de Jor. Des recherches dans un p\u00e9rim\u00e8tre jusqu\u2019\u00e0 Sarlat \u00e9chouent. Puis une occasion se pr\u00e9sente ailleurs, en Auvergne, o\u00f9 <strong>Arnaud Desjardins<\/strong>, l\u2019auteur et cin\u00e9aste qui fit conna\u00eetre au grand public la sagesse des ma\u00eetres tib\u00e9tains, offre des conditions tr\u00e8s favorables pour <strong>l\u2019acquisition de b\u00e2timents au Bost<\/strong>, o\u00f9 il a un centre d\u2019enseignement et de m\u00e9ditation. L\u2019empreinte spirituelle y est forte et il souhaite que ce soit un lieu authentique pour le Dharma. <strong>Le XVI<\/strong><\/span><strong>\u1d49 <\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Karmapa<\/strong> y avait \u00e9t\u00e9 re\u00e7u en 1977 et y avait accompli la c\u00e9r\u00e9monie de la coiffe noire ; <strong>Dilgo Khyents\u00e9 Rinpoch\u00e9<\/strong> et Dudjom Rinpoch\u00e9 y avaient \u00e9galement s\u00e9journ\u00e9.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Une premi\u00e8re maison est acquise fin 1983<\/strong> et les futurs retraitant se mettent rapidement \u00e0 l\u2019\u0153uvre pour pr\u00e9parer le b\u00e2timent : am\u00e9nagement de chambres individuelles, de temples, de murs d\u2019enceinte et de s\u00e9paration entre le lieu de retraite pour hommes et celui pour femmes. Les \u00e9v\u00e9nements se succ\u00e9dent rapidement. <strong>Fin f\u00e9vrier 1984,<\/strong> Kundreul Ling invite les autorit\u00e9s locales \u00e0 visiter les lieux et Guendune Rinpoch\u00e9 donne un court enseignement. Dans la revue <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tendrel<\/span><\/i><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> n\u00b0 6 <\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(juillet 1984)<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, on peut lire : \u00ab Le 7 mars, jour du nouvel an tib\u00e9tain (Losar), une journ\u00e9e portes ouvertes a \u00e9t\u00e9 organis\u00e9e et, malgr\u00e9 un temps frisquet, a permis de rencontrer des retraitants et de leur pr\u00e9senter l\u2019\u00e9cole Karma Kagyu. <strong>Le 12 mars, Guendune Rinpoch\u00e9 donne les disciplines monastiques aux retraitants.<\/strong> Pendant ce temps, une nouvelle \u00e9quipe de r\u00e9sidents s\u2019installe \u00e0 Dhagpo Kagyu Ling pour s\u2019occuper du site apr\u00e8s le d\u00e9part des retraitants. \u00bb<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Le jour m\u00eame,<strong> lama Teunzang, lama Pema Dorj\u00e9 et lama Purtsela sont pr\u00e9sents pour l\u2019entr\u00e9e en retraite<\/strong>. Lama Namgyal se souvient : \u00ab on se connaissait beaucoup car on avait v\u00e9cu ensemble \u00e0 Dhagpo, au minimum quatre ans. On \u00e9tait un groupe tr\u00e8s uni et on avait une telle d\u00e9votion envers lama Guendune. \u00bb <strong>La premi\u00e8re ann\u00e9e,<\/strong> la retraite porte sur les pr\u00e9liminaires, lojong, shin\u00e9 et lhaktong ; <strong>la deuxi\u00e8me ann\u00e9e<\/strong> sur la pratique de Dorj\u00e9 Pamo et <strong>la troisi\u00e8me<\/strong> sur les six yogas de Naropa. Lama Guendune pr\u00e9cisait : \u00ab Je vais chaque mois au centre de retraite prendre des nouvelles et mesurer le progr\u00e8s de la pratique. Chacun relate ses exp\u00e9riences et, en fonction de cela, graduellement, les enseignements sont donn\u00e9s. \u00bb <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Tendrel n\u00b07, janvier 1985<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) Par ailleurs, les retraitants re\u00e7oivent la visite de <strong>Pawo Rinpoch\u00e9 et de Kalou Rinpoch\u00e9 en 1984,<\/strong> et, au cours de leur retraite, de <strong>Shamar Rinpoch\u00e9<\/strong> \u00e0 deux reprises, ainsi que de Situ Rinpoch\u00e9 et lama Teunzang.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">En repensant \u00e0 cette p\u00e9riode et \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9volution qui a eu lieu depuis, Fran\u00e7ois Theaux, membre de cette premi\u00e8re retraite, se souvient : \u00ab On n\u2019avait pas la notion de l\u2019amplitude de ce qui se passait et qu\u2019elle allait prendre.
