With the consecration of the Stupa of Enlightenment, Dhagpo Kagyu Ling welcomed its first support for offering and virtue accumulation, representing the very manifestation of Buddha\u2019s mind.<\/span><\/p>\n

This stupa is so named because it was first built in India on the occasion of Shakyamuni Buddha\u2019s enlightenment. Its shape symbolizes all the qualities of the buddhas. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Gendun Rinpoche<\/strong> told all those gathered for the occasion,<\/strong> during which abundant light and food offerings were made.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

This is a particularly auspicious day and all the wishing prayers that we express today will carry a special power. If you are short of ideas, you can express the wish to develop compassion as vast as Chenrezig\u2019s compassion, wisdom as vast as Manjushri\u2019s wisdom and power in activity for the good of all beings as powerful as Vajrapani\u2019s power.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The day began with the Dorje Sempa puja in front of the stupa. As an article in <\/span>Tendrel, <\/span><\/i>Issue Number 32 of September 1993, reports, \u201dThe consecration of the stupa was proceeding calmly under bright sunshine when suddenly Rinpoche, who was tossing rice, let his dorje slip out of his hand in his gesture of offering. It flew off in a flash of gold and rose up in the sky before falling a few meters behind him!\u201d One of the photographs in our album captures this moment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the afternoon, a tsok accumulation was held during which Rinpoche gave a kata to those who had built the stupa. The day ended with the Mahakala ritual.<\/span><\/p>\n

A documentary shows all the steps involved in the stupa\u2019s construction<\/strong> from building the structure itself to the rituals performed at every stage to consecrate all the substances inside. \u201cLama Gendun had asked for a peace stupa to be built here,\u201d recalls Yves Cl\u00e9ment, one of the stupa\u2019s builders who had resided at Dhagpo since 1976 and specialized in carpentry. Gendun Rinpoche chose the site\u2014precisely where, a short time before, a dowser consulted to find a spring that could be tapped to supply water for the residents had identified the junction of two rivers. The drilling plan was abandoned in favor of installing the large concrete blocks upon which the stupa stands. The construction lasted two years. <\/span><\/p>\n

In consultation with Lama Jigme Rinpoche, Gendun Rinpoche, and Lama Zimpenla, the plans, based on the same model as the stupa at Dhagpo Kundreul Ling<\/strong> were finalized by Nicolas Henry, who had completed the first traditional three-year retreat.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Every element, from base to summit, carries a symbolic and spiritual meaning, along with its own history. \u201cThere\u2019s not one inch inside that is not filled\u2014with mantra scrolls, <\/span>tsatsas<\/span><\/i>, relics of the Buddha, of the Karmapas, and with a large mandala drawn here,\u201d explains Yves. The <\/span>sokshing, <\/span><\/i>or <\/span>tree of life<\/span><\/i> that is placed in the center like a spine also has its own story. Through a connection of some practitioners at Dhagpo, \u201cwe went to the Pyrenees, to visit someone who had a large meadow surrounded by hundreds of cypress trees. Lama Gendun and Lama Zimpenla had told us to cut the cypress tree but that it had to be facing eastwards. It\u2019s precise. It’s a real science, nothing is left to chance! We brought it back in our truck and carved it here on-site into an obelisk measuring about two-and-a-half meters, with a double dorje painted at one end.\u201d Holes are drilled in it to create small niches that house relics of great masters, most often brought back by Jigme Rinpoche. Then the whole structure is placed in a large protection tube.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Specialized craftsmen<\/strong> worked on different parts of the stupa; a local coppersmith carved all the copper pieces for the top of the stupa, which included elements drawn by Max in consultation with the lamas.<\/strong> A cutlery factory near Thiers designed special containers for plating, or applying the gold and silver to the parasol, the moon, and the sun using electrolysis.\u00a0 As for the Buddha statue, it was brought back from Nepal by Jigme Rinpoche. Throughout the process of construction, people made donations.<\/span><\/p>\n

The further one goes towards the top of the stupa, which is hollow inside\u2014made of wood casings and a large mold in the shape of a ship\u2019s hull\u2014the more precious the substances become. Yves remembers the final filling stage,<\/strong> carried out by Lama Thubten, a specialist in the matter from Tsurphu (Tibet) and who had completed a traditional three-year retreat in Rumtek. \u201cTwo of us were up on the stupa, and we passed things to Lama for filling, but it was deep, so we were holding him so that he wouldn\u2019t fall to the bottom. We placed the two large vases that were filled to the top on the edge of the stupa when I saw a huge black cloud coming towards us. I thought we\u2019d better put a tarp up. There was a strong gust of wind that blew the second vase over. Lama had prepared a spare one. It all lasted five minutes. We don\u2019t know what happened,\u201d Yves recalls.<\/span><\/p>\n

The presence of a stupa is a blessing<\/strong>. As Gendun Rinpoche explains, <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBefore he physically disappeared, Shakyamuni Buddha personally gave instructions about building stupas because without stupas, there can\u2019t be any accumulation of merit and without accumulation of merit, there is no possible liberation. A stupa produces all benefits, relative and ultimate. It dispels negative influences, protects from illnesses, wars, famines and conflicts, increases everything that is positive in the world, improves harvests, protects life, and brings harmony. This support represents the purity and strength of purification of all the victorious ones. Seeing and touching it is like receiving an empowerment. In Tibet, and especially in the Kham region, people often didn\u2019t have the physical and material means to attend an empowerment. That\u2019s why there are so many stupas in this region. All of stupa transmission in Tibet goes back to Atisha after the Indian king Lang Dharma had destroyed all the stupas that had been built on the instructions of Guru Rinpoche. Lord Atisha reestablished this tradition everywhere. I rejoice that this tradition is now spreading to the West.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Dhagpo Kagyu Ling\u2019s Sukhavati Garden<\/strong><\/a> now houses the great stupa of Shamar Rinpoche as well as eight stupas commemorating eight moments in the life of Shakyamuni Buddha, along with stupas in homage of Gendun Rinpoche and Lama Purtsela.<\/span><\/p>\n

To mark this event, on March 8, in the presence of Lama Jigme Rinpoche<\/strong>, we will gather at the Institute to practice the Guru Yoga of the 16th Karmapa and carry out recitations and offerings around the stupa.<\/p>\n

Avec la cons\u00e9cration du stoupa de l\u2019\u00c9veil, autrefois appel\u00e9 stoupa de l\u2019Illumination, Dhagpo Kagyu Ling accueille son tout premier support d\u2019offrande et d\u2019accumulation de vertu, qui est la manifestation m\u00eame de l\u2019esprit du Bouddha.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Le stoupa est ainsi nomm\u00e9 \u00ab stoupa de l\u2019\u00c9veil \u00bb, car il fut construit sous cette forme pour la premi\u00e8re fois en Inde afin de comm\u00e9morer l\u2019\u00e9veil du Bouddha Shakyamuni. Lors de sa cons\u00e9cration,<\/strong> au cours de laquelle d\u2019abondantes offrandes de lumi\u00e8re et de nourriture avaient \u00e9t\u00e9 faites, lama Guendune<\/strong>, s\u2019adressant \u00e0 tous ceux r\u00e9unis pour l\u2019occasion, leur dit alors ceci : <\/span><\/p>\r\n

C\u2019est un jour particuli\u00e8rement favorable, toutes les pri\u00e8res de souhaits que l\u2019on exprimera aujourd\u2019hui auront une puissance particuli\u00e8re. S\u2019il vous manque des id\u00e9es, vous pouvez exprimer le souhait de d\u00e9velopper une compassion aussi vaste que celle de Chenrezik, une sagesse aussi vaste que\u00a0 celle de Manjushri et une puissance dans l\u2019activit\u00e9 pour le bien de tous les \u00eatres \u00e9gale \u00e0 celle de Vajrapani. \u00bb<\/span><\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

La journ\u00e9e commence avec la <\/span>puja<\/span><\/i> de Dorj\u00e9 Sempa devant le stoupa. Comme le rapporte un article dans la revue <\/span>Tendrel n\u00b0 32 (septembre 1993)<\/span><\/i> : \u00ab La cons\u00e9cration du stoupa se d\u00e9roulait calmement sous un soleil \u00e9clatant quand soudain Rinpoch\u00e9, qui lan\u00e7ait du riz, laissa, dans son geste d\u2019offrande, \u00e9chapper son <\/span>dorj\u00e9<\/span><\/i> qui partit dans un \u00e9clat d\u2019or et s\u2019\u00e9leva dans les airs pour retomber quelques m\u00e8tres plus loin, derri\u00e8re lui ! \u00bb (Une image illustre ce moment dans l\u2019album photo). L\u2019apr\u00e8s-midi se poursuit avec une accumulation de <\/span>tsok<\/span><\/i>, au cours de laquelle Rinpoch\u00e9 remet une <\/span>kata<\/span><\/i> \u00e0 ceux qui avaient construit le stoupa. Le rituel de Mahakala cl\u00f4ture la journ\u00e9e.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Un documentaire montre toutes les \u00e9tapes de la construction du stoupa<\/strong> depuis la structure elle-m\u00eame jusqu\u2019aux rituels pour consacrer, \u00e0 chaque \u00e9tape, toutes les substances \u00e0 l\u2019int\u00e9rieur. \u00ab Lama Guendune a demand\u00e9 qu\u2019il y ait un stoupa de la paix ici \u00bb se souvient Yves Cl\u00e9ment, l\u2019un des b\u00e2tisseurs du stoupa, r\u00e9sident \u00e0 Dhagpo depuis 1976, sp\u00e9cialis\u00e9 dans les charpentes et menuiseries.\u00a0 Lama Guendune en a choisi l\u2019emplacement exactement \u00e0 l\u2019endroit o\u00f9, peu de temps avant, un sourcier, consult\u00e9 afin de trouver une source qui pourrait \u00eatre exploit\u00e9e pour l\u2019approvisionnement en eau des r\u00e9sidents, avait identifi\u00e9 un croisement de deux rivi\u00e8res. Fini donc le plan de forage et place aux gros blocs de b\u00e9ton sur lesquels est pos\u00e9 le stoupa, dont la construction a dur\u00e9 pr\u00e8s de deux ans.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

En concertation avec lama Jigm\u00e9 Rinpoch\u00e9, Guendune Rinpoch\u00e9 et lama Zimpenla, les plans furent mis au point sur le m\u00eame mod\u00e8le que le stoupa \u00e0 Dhagpo Kundreul Ling<\/strong>, par Nicolas Henry, qui avait effectu\u00e9 la premi\u00e8re retraite traditionnelle de trois ans .<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Chaque \u00e9l\u00e9ment, de la base au sommet, a une port\u00e9e symbolique et spirituelle ainsi qu\u2019une histoire propre. \u00ab Il n\u2019y a pas un centim\u00e8tre \u00e0 l\u2019int\u00e9rieur, explique Yves, qui ne soit rempli de rouleaux de mantras, de <\/span>tsatsas<\/span><\/i>, de reliques du Bouddha et des Karmapas, et d\u2019un grand mandala dessin\u00e9 ici. \u00bb Le <\/span>sokshing <\/span><\/i>ou \u00ab arbre de vie \u00bb plac\u00e9 au centre, \u00e0 la mani\u00e8re d\u2019une colonne vert\u00e9brale, a aussi son histoire. On l\u2019a rapport\u00e9 dans notre camion et taill\u00e9 sur place pour en faire un ob\u00e9lisque d\u2019environ 2 m 50 avec un double <\/span>dorj\u00e9<\/span><\/i> peint \u00e0 une extr\u00e9mit\u00e9. \u00bb Des trous y sont perc\u00e9s pour cr\u00e9er des petites niches qui abritent des reliques de grands ma\u00eetres, le plus souvent rapport\u00e9es par Jigm\u00e9 Rinpoch\u00e9, puis le tout est plac\u00e9 dans un gros tube de protection.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Des artisans sp\u00e9cialis\u00e9s<\/strong> ont travaill\u00e9 sur diff\u00e9rentes parties du stoupa : un dinandier install\u00e9 dans la r\u00e9gion a taill\u00e9 toutes les parties en cuivre en haut du stoupa, avec des \u00e9l\u00e9ments dessin\u00e9s par Max, en lien avec les lamas<\/strong>. Une coutellerie pr\u00e8s de Thiers a con\u00e7u des bacs sp\u00e9ciaux pour appliquer l\u2019or et l\u2019argent par \u00e9lectrolyse sur l\u2019ombrelle, la lune et le soleil. Quant \u00e0 la statue du Bouddha, elle a \u00e9t\u00e9 rapport\u00e9e du N\u00e9pal par Jigm\u00e9 Rinpoch\u00e9. Au fur et \u00e0 mesure de la construction, des personnes faisaient des dons.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Plus on progresse vers le haut du stoupa, dont l\u2019int\u00e9rieur est creux, contenant des coffrages en bois et un grand moule en forme de coque de bateau, plus les substances qu\u2019il contient sont sacr\u00e9es. Yves se souvient de la derni\u00e8re \u00e9tape de remplissage<\/strong> qui revenait \u00e0 lama Thoubten, sp\u00e9cialiste en la mati\u00e8re, originaire de Tsurphu (Tibet) et ayant accompli une retraite traditionnelle de trois ans \u00e0 Rumtek : \u00ab On \u00e9tait deux sur le stoupa et on passait des choses \u00e0 Lama<\/span> pour le remplissage, mais c\u2019\u00e9tait profond alors on le tenait pour qu\u2019il ne tombe pas au fond. On a pos\u00e9 les deux gros vases remplis sur le bord du stoupa quand j\u2019ai vu un \u00e9norme nuage noir arriver. Je me suis dit qu\u2019il faudrait b\u00e2cher. Il y a eu un grand coup de vent et le deuxi\u00e8me vase s\u2019est \u00e9tal\u00e9. Lama en avait pr\u00e9vu un autre qu\u2019il est all\u00e9 chercher. \u00c7a a dur\u00e9 cinq minutes. On ne sait pas ce qui s\u2019est pass\u00e9. \u00bb<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00ab Avant de dispara\u00eetre physiquement, le Bouddha Shakyamuni a donn\u00e9 en personne des instructions relatives \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9dification des stoupas, car sans stoupas, il n\u2019y a pas d\u2019accumulation de m\u00e9rite et sans accumulation de m\u00e9rite, il n\u2019y a pas de lib\u00e9ration possible. Un stoupa produit tous les bienfaits relatifs aussi bien qu\u2019ultimes. Il dissipe les influences n\u00e9gatives, prot\u00e8ge des maladies, des guerres, des famines, des conflits, accro\u00eet tout ce qui est positif dans le monde, augmente les r\u00e9coltes, prot\u00e8ge la vie, apporte l\u2019harmonie. Ce support repr\u00e9sente la puret\u00e9 et la puissance de purification de tous les vainqueurs. Le voir et le toucher \u00e9quivaut \u00e0 une initiation. Au Tibet, et particuli\u00e8rement au Kham, les gens n\u2019avaient souvent pas la possibilit\u00e9 mat\u00e9rielle, physique, d\u2019aller recevoir une initiation, c\u2019est pourquoi il existait tant de stoupas dans cette contr\u00e9e. Toute la transmission des stoupas au Tibet remonte \u00e0 Atisha apr\u00e8s que le roi indien Lang Dharma avait d\u00e9truit tous les stoupas qui avaient \u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e9difi\u00e9s sous l\u2019\u00e9gide de Gourou Rinpoch\u00e9. Le seigneur Atisha a r\u00e9tabli partout cette tradition.
