Though safeguarding is essential, it is not an end in itself\u2014<strong>the aim<\/strong> is to make this knowledge available to as many people as possible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In our Western context, few people are born Buddhists. We become so, step by step, by understanding the Buddha\u2019s message and applying it. The <strong>Buddha<\/strong> lived 2,500 years ago. How did his <strong>message and method<\/strong> reach us? Through accomplished practitioners and their writings; a meticulous handwritten record of the teachings by the first disciples of the Enlightened One. These texts were then commented upon, translated, and published\u2014in other words made accessible and transmitted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the <strong>Karma Kagyu lineage<\/strong>, <strong>the book<\/strong> is not an object of veneration but rather an <strong>instrument for understanding\u00a0 the path<\/strong> and a reminder of it. The practitioner adopts a tradition, applies and deepens the teachings of a qualified teacher in order to be permeated by this heritage until it becomes his or her own. Human beings transmit the teaching and the book plays the role of support, of memory\u2014the<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sine qua non<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> condition for\u00a0 transmission.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When was the Dhagpo Kagyu Library born?<strong> Everything truly began one day in April 2000<\/strong> when a collection of Tibetan texts arrived in the form of <strong>37,000 microfilms.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;Texte titre 2&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; custom_css_free_form=&#8221;||<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>|| || G\u00e9n\u00e9ralement, les initiations, la transmission de la lecture rituelle et les instructions sont tr\u00e8s importantes et, tout comme les pr\u00e9c\u00e9dents Karmapas, je dois recevoir toutes les transmissions. At the end of the 1970s, an American by the name of <strong>Gene Smith (<\/strong>1936\u20132010), was working in New Delhi for the Library of Congress in Washington. He spent most of his time seeking to <strong>recover Buddhist texts lost in China\u2019s invasion of Tibet<\/strong> and making copies of the books that reached him. A program of the size and importance of PL 480 could certainly be leveraged to support the publication of collected Tibetan texts, but what\u2019s the link between publishing ancient texts and food distribution?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gene Smith proposed to capitalize on the growing reach of the PL 480 program and to expand this food aid program to <\/span><strong><i>food for thought<\/i><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>,<\/strong>\u00a0 namely to make it possible for the Library of Congress to acquire Tibetan texts through the PL 480 programme. Once the administrative challenges had been dealt with, Gene Smith, <strong>with the help of eminent Tibetan masters<\/strong> of the time such as Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche (1910-1991), D\u00fcjom Rinpoche (1904-1987) and many others, was able to <strong>collect these endangered treasures of humanity<\/strong> from the Himalayas\u2014from Tibet, Bhutan or Nepal. He organized the printing of these ancient texts by photomechanical means so that they could be turned into new publications available for purchase. By today\u2019s norms and standards, it was quite a primitive technique but an <strong>undeniably brilliant solution<\/strong>. The goal was not only to save these endangered books from extinction, but also to encourage their publication for future generations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These texts belonging to all traditions of Tibetan Buddhism were originally saved by Tibetan practitioners who carried them into exile at the cost of their lives. Gene Smith\u2019s work and ingenuity made it possible to preserve them and <strong>make them accessible. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then the texts were <strong>microfilmed by the Institute for Advanced Studies of World Religions<\/strong> in New York for preservation purposes. Thanks to the immense generosity of a patron, <strong>Dhagpo Kagyu Library<\/strong> was able to <strong>acquire a copy<\/strong> of almost the entire collection\u2014thirty-seven thousand microfilms comprising some three thousand titles in Tibetan, in Western or traditional Tibetan format. All these documents can be <strong>consulted free<\/strong> of charge in our reading room that is open to all. The Library is not limited to a single location but extends to an <strong>international network<\/strong> of libraries in <strong>France<\/strong>, <strong>India<\/strong>, and <strong>Nepal<\/strong>. Don\u2019t hesitate to consult its online catalogue on its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catalogue.bibliotheque-dhagpo-kagyu.org\/#\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dedicated application<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/dhagpo-library.org\/index.php\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website<\/a>. Il organisa l\u2019impression de ces textes anciens par des moyens photom\u00e9caniques afin qu\u2019ils puissent \u00eatre transform\u00e9s en nouvelles publications disponibles \u00e0 l\u2019achat.
