Eighteen months after the passing of His Holiness the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa Rangjung Rigpe Dorje<\/a> on November 5, 1981, his reincarnation, later recognized by the 14th K\u00fcnzig Shamarpa, was born in the Barkor area of Lhasa on May 6, 1983.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

His father, the 3rd Mipham Rinpoche<\/strong>, an emanation of Manjushri, is the reincarnation of the 1st Mipham Rinpoche, the renowned Nyingma master and influential scholar. He spent thirteen years in retreat in Junyung Gompa, his monastery in Tibet where, among many other practices, he accomplished two thousand Nyungne rituals of thousand-armed Chenrezig.<\/span><\/p>\n

His mother, Dechen Wangmo<\/strong>, from the Kham region, comes from a family of devout Dharma practitioners.\u00a0 When she was four months pregnant and living in Lhasa, her husband Mipham Rinpoche had to leave due to his spiritual responsibilities in Kham.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHe gave me very precise instructions to follow, like being vegetarian, making many wishes and circumambulations and being very careful so that everything goes well for the child and myself,\u201d she recalled in an interview given at Dhago Kundreul Ling in 2004<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>\n

\n

When I was pregnant with His Holiness, I dreamt of a very tall man with a long beard. I didn\u2019t know who it was, so I asked Mipham Rinpoche. He said that it was a very favorable sign and that I should continue making wishes. After ten months and ten days, I gave birth to Karmapa at the hospital. The nurse and doctor told me that at the time of birth there was no blood but a white liquid, like water. Mipham Rinpoche had insisted that my father be at my side. He told me that there had been rainbows that day.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Very early on, Karmapa, then known as Tenzin Khyentse, gave hints as to who he was on several occasions. As Dechen Wangmo recounts in the above interview and in the documentary, <\/span>From Youth to Mastery.[1]<\/b><\/sup><\/span><\/i><\/a><\/p>\n

\n

When the Karmapa was not even one year old, we were in Lhasa. One day I was with the sister of the 16th Karmapa, Dorje Kandro. We were chatting over tea, and the Karmapa was in my arms. Upon seeing her the Karmapa beamed all over his face. She asked, \u2018Who are you? What\u2019s the matter with you ?\u2019 He raised his hands and said \u2018I am the Karmapa.\u2019 We were both very surprised that he could speak, and Dorje Kandro was very touched. She immediately believed it was true\u2014she was sure it was him. The 16th Karmapa had told her that they would certainly meet again. Dorje Kandro made beautiful clothes for His Holiness, very soft, in magnificent fabrics. She was very happy and insisted that I pay close attention to the Karmapa. He was a very good and gentle child. He never got angry. He was always very kind with his parents.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Dechen Wangmo had a second son<\/strong>, S\u00f6nam Tsemo Rinpoche, recognized as the eighth reincarnation of the great master and one of the founding fathers of the Sakya tradition, the Ist S\u00f6nam Tsemo<\/strong> (1142-1182).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Literally speaking, Karmapa means <\/span>the one who carries out the activity of all the buddhas<\/span><\/i> in order to help all beings. Lama Jigme Rinpoche explained in the teaching he gave in August 2019:<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Karmapa is beyond our ordinary conception. He is not an ordinary individual like you and me. When we practice, the role of the blessing is crucial. It will have an effect on the way we see and understand things. The blessing originates from the quality of \u2018great beings.\u2019 When we practice, a contact is established between the quality of these \u2018great beings\u2019 and us. This contact is a support for our path. \u2018Great beings\u2019 refers to the bodhisattvas such as Gyalwa Karmapa or Chenrezig, meaning beings that are totally free from ignorance and whose only purpose is the benefit of every sentient life, whatever it may be.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

This principle of enlightenment and receptacle of a lineage is beyond our ordinary grasping. If his human form might lead one to see him as an individual, Himalayan practitioners know him as \u201cBuddha Karmapa\u201d (<\/span>Sangye Karmapa<\/span><\/i>). In the 12th century, the first Karmapa<\/a>, D\u00fcsum Khyenpa, a disciple of Gampopa<\/a>, prior to his death, described the circumstances of his rebirth. The second Karmapa, Karma Pakshi (1204\u20131283 CE) was recognized as his reincarnation and thus started the first tradition of reincarnated lamas of Tibet. Since then, the Karmapas<\/a> have manifested themselves in an unbroken continuity of reincarnations up to the present day.<\/span><\/p>\n

Historically, one of the Shamarpa\u2019s key responsibilities<\/strong> is to preserve the authenticity and purity of the Kagyu lineage, and in this capacity, find the Karmapa\u2019s genuine emanation. In 1996, during a Karma Kagyu gathering at the Karmapa International Buddhist Institute in New Delhi, Mipham Ch\u00f6kyi Lodr\u00f6, His Holiness the 14th K\u00fcnzig Shamarpa explained<\/strong>, <\/span><\/p>\n

\n

The process of recognizing and identifying an incarnation is a purely spiritual practice. Recognizing incarnations is an enlightened activity.<\/span><\/p>\n

This process<\/strong> began in 1986, when the Karmapa was only three years old.<\/span>[2]<\/span><\/sup> It involved indications from the Sakya master Chogye Trichen Rinpoche<\/a>, from an accomplished spiritual disciple who had received a detailed prophecy from the 16th Karmapa about his future incarnation, as well as Shamarpa\u2019s intensive practice at the <\/span>Jowo Zamling Karpo<\/span><\/i> (Chenrezig statue) in Kathmandu and at the Tara statue in Pharping as well as a contemplative retreat. In the utmost discretion in light of the political situation, he also sent trustworthy teachers such as Lop\u00f6n Tsechu Rinpoche to Tibet to meet the child. Kunzig Shamarpa himself travelled incognito to Tibet in an attempt to meet the reincarnation but Chinese surveillance forbade him from approaching the young boy or his parents. On January 15, 1994, the 17th Karmapa escaped to India<\/strong>, a date that correlates with a prediction of the 16th Karmapa: <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI will not stay. I will go to faraway places\u2014I am not certain where\u2014

<\/span>The cuckoo bird comes to Tibet in the springtime.
<\/span>On a day when a sad melody is sung six times,
<\/span>This scenario will happen: People who depend on me will think,
<\/span>\u2018Where is the man, Rigdrol, now?\u2019
<\/span>Isn\u2019t it sad for all of you who depend on me?
<\/span>The one called Rigdrol is famous far and wide.<\/span>
<\/span>People will be saying, \u2018He is not there, and we are not sure where he is.\u2019
<\/span>In its heart, the duck relied on the lake
<\/span>but the shameless lake brought ice, its partner, and became sealed.<\/span>
<\/span>In its heart, the white lion trusted the snowy mountain
<\/span>but the beautiful white snowy mountain invited sunlight as a partner.
<\/span>Now I won\u2019t say much. It\u2019s just a joke!
<\/span>But when the two, a joke and a noble meaning, are joined together, then in
<\/span>the year hosted by the bird at the time of capturing victory,
<\/span>I have prayed that we\u2019d meet together happily and joyfully.\u2019\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

His parents and brother fled separately. Two months later, on March 17,<\/strong> Kunzig Shamarpa led a public recognition ceremony<\/strong> of Trinley Thaye Dorje in New Delhi<\/strong> and in 1996, at Bodhgaya, he performed the traditional hair-cutting ceremony for the 17th Karmapa.<\/span><\/p>\n

As a supreme <\/span>nirmanakaya, <\/span><\/i>Karmapa is beyond the stage of training, but in order to accomplish the wellbeing of his disciples and all sentient beings, he followed an extensive training in both the sutric and tantric traditions of Buddha Dharma from prominent teachers such as K\u00fcnzig Shamarpa himself but also Topga Rinpoche, Professor Sempa Dorje and Khenpo Chrodrak Tenphel Rinpoche. <\/span><\/p>\n

He received the empowerments and transmissions due to his rank so as to continue the uninterrupted transmission of the Karma Kagyu lineage. Shamarpa also took care that he received teachings and transmissions from other Buddhist lineages and great masters such as Chogye Trichen Rinpoche, Luding Khenchen Rinpoche and Pewar Rinpoche.<\/a> We have recorded some of them in separate stories on this 50th anniversary website<\/a>. In 2004, having completed his formal education, Shamarpa declared the 17th Karmapa as Vidhyadhara, holder of the Karma Kagyu lineage.<\/span><\/p>\n

[\u2026] The moment I was recognized as Karmapa, I was entrusted with the great responsibility not really to help a few individuals but to commit to the welfare of all beings. This is my commitment as the Gyalwa Karmapa.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Karmapa Chenno<\/span><\/h2>\n

We recite the Karmapa Chenno mantra with the aim of freeing ourselves from suffering and attaining Buddhahood for the benefit of all beings. This particular mantra literally means <\/span>Karmapa knows everything<\/span><\/i>. Karmapa knows the needs of all beings, and when we open up to him, he can fulfill our wishes through the power of his compassion and the strength of his enlightened mind. So when we recite this mantra, we’re actually saying: because you’re the omniscient Buddha and you know that we’re suffering, you’ve come into this world for our benefit and to free us from this suffering.<\/span><\/p>\n

Quand j\u2019\u00e9tais enceinte de Sa Saintet\u00e9, j\u2019ai r\u00eav\u00e9 d\u2019un tr\u00e8s grand homme avec une longue barbe blanche. Apr\u00e8s dix mois et dix jours, j\u2019ai donn\u00e9 naissance au Karmapa \u00e0 l\u2019h\u00f4pital. L\u2019infirmi\u00e8re et le m\u00e9decin m\u2019ont dit qu\u2019au moment de la naissance, il n\u2019y avait pas de sang mais un liquide blanc, comme de l\u2019eau. Mipham Rinpoch\u00e9 avait insist\u00e9 pour que mon p\u00e8re soit \u00e0 mes c\u00f4t\u00e9s. Il m\u2019a dit qu\u2019il y avait eu des arcs-en-ciel ce jour-l\u00e0.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>

Elle crut imm\u00e9diatement que c\u2019\u00e9tait vrai, elle \u00e9tait s\u00fbre que c\u2019\u00e9tait lui. Le XVI<\/span>\u1d49<\/span> Karmapa lui avait dit qu\u2019ils se rencontreraient certainement de nouveau\u2026 Pour Sa Saintet\u00e9, Dorj\u00e9 Kandro confectionna de tr\u00e8s beaux habits, tr\u00e8s doux, dans des tissus magnifiques. Elle \u00e9tait tr\u00e8s contente et me pria de faire tr\u00e8s attention au Karmapa. C\u2019\u00e9tait un enfant tr\u00e8s sage, tr\u00e8s doux, qui ne se mettait jamais en col\u00e8re. Il \u00e9tait vraiment gentil avec ses parents tout le temps.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>

Dechen Wangmo donna naissance \u00e0 un deuxi\u00e8me fils, S\u00f6nam Tsemo Rinpoch\u00e9, reconnu comme la huiti\u00e8me r\u00e9incarnation de l\u2019un des grands ma\u00eetres et p\u00e8res fondateurs de la tradition sakya, le 1er<\/sup> S\u00f6nam Ts\u00e9mo<\/span><\/p>

Au sens litt\u00e9ral, Karmapa signifie<\/strong> \u00ab celui qui d\u00e9tient l\u2019activit\u00e9 de tous les bouddhas \u00bb afin d\u2019aider les \u00eatres sensibles. Dans un enseignement donn\u00e9 en ao\u00fbt 2018, lama Jigm\u00e9 Rinpoch\u00e9 explique :<\/span><\/p>

Karmapa est au-del\u00e0 de notre conception ordinaire. Ce n\u2019est pas un individu ordinaire comme vous et moi. Lorsque nous pratiquons, le r\u00f4le de la b\u00e9n\u00e9diction est crucial. Elle aura un effet sur la fa\u00e7on dont nous voyons et comprenons les choses. Cette b\u00e9n\u00e9diction prend sa source dans la qualit\u00e9 de ces grands \u00eatres. Lorsque nous pratiquons, nous \u00e9tablissons un contact entre la qualit\u00e9 de ces grands \u00eatres et nous-m\u00eames. Ce contact est un soutien sur notre chemin. Si sa forme humaine peut nous amener \u00e0 le percevoir comme un individu \u00e0 part enti\u00e8re, les pratiquants de l\u2019Himalaya le consid\u00e8rent comme le \u00ab Bouddha Karmapa \u00bb (Sangy\u00e9 Karmapa). Au XII<\/span>e<\/span><\/sup> si\u00e8cle, avant de mourir, le <\/span>I<\/span>er<\/span> Karmapa D\u00fcsum Khyenpa<\/span><\/a>, un disciple de <\/span>Gampopa<\/span><\/a>, d\u00e9crivit les circonstances de sa renaissance.
