This collection offers a glimpse of the immense wealth of Indian Mahamudra texts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In its <a href=\"https:\/\/library.bdrc.io\/show\/bdr:MW3CN636\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">xylographic edition printed at the Karma Kagyu monastery in Palpung,<\/a> Eastern Tibet, the collection filled three large volumes, as does the <a href=\"https:\/\/library.bdrc.io\/show\/bdr:MW23447\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reprint produced under the 14th Shamar Rinpoche\u2019s guidance in Delhi in 1997<\/a>. The <a href=\"https:\/\/library.bdrc.io\/show\/bdr:MW1KG12589\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">modern edition in book form (2009)<\/a> is made up of six volumes with a total of 2,600 pages in Tibetan. The collection is in the process of being translated by <a href=\"https:\/\/wisdomexperience.org\/sounds-of-innate-freedom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Karl Brunnh\u00f6lzl and Wisdom Edition<\/a>; four of the six volumes have been published.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The great majority of the 217 works included in this anthology come from the <strong>Tengyur<\/strong>, the collection of the realized, scholarly Indian masters that have been translated into Tibetan (in contrast with the <strong>Kangyur<\/strong>, which gathers the translation of all the sutras, or teachings of Shakyamuni Buddha, into roughly one hundred volumes).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The length of these <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indian Mahamudra Texts<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> varies from a single sentence to nearly two hundred pages. These works are split into<strong> seven genres:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An\u0101vilatantra<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <strong>a tantric teaching<\/strong> attributed to the Buddha and considered to be the primary source of Mahamudra, along with its commentary<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>The songs of realization<\/strong> (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">doh\u0101<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cary\u0101g\u012bti<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vajrag\u012bti)<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> chanted by the Indian masters on different occasions, for example during the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ganachakras<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or tantric festivals, or during significant spiritual experiences<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <strong>commentaries<\/strong> on these songs of realization and on other texts<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the independent <strong>tantric treatises<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the<strong> non tantric treatises<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the <strong>edifying<\/strong> narratives<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>doxographies<\/strong> (texts presenting the different Buddhist and nonBuddhist systems of thought)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of the authors of these works are well known figures among the eighty-four mahasiddhas, the men and women who were highly accomplished in the practice of the Buddhist tantras. By receiving empowerment, the practitioner crosses a threshold that allows them to engage in the practice of the Buddhist tantras, the <strong>Vajray\u0101na<\/strong>.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are two forms of empowerment: the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">transmissions of power<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wang<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">abhisheka<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">practice authorizations<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">jenang<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). The first belong to the class of tantras of Insurpassable Yoga (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Niruttaratantra<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and are associated with tantras such as Hevajra, Chakrasamvara or Kalachakra. By receiving a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wang<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the practitioner penetrates into the mandala of a specific yidam and is authorized to engage in the practice of the creation phases (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kyerim<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and perfection phases (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dzogrim<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) of this yidam. We also call this type of empowerment a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">major empowerment<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to designate the fact that it contains the four empowerment phases (of vase, secret, wisdom and word) and is associated with the fourteen root <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">samayas<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and numerous related commitments. The <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">practice authorizations<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are empowerments that authorize the practitioner to meditate in the form of the specific yidam. They are associated with the first step of the power transmissions, the vase initiation, and allow for practicing the creation phase.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The collection entitled <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Knowing One to Liberate All<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp; (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gcig shes kun grol<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a collection<strong> that brings<\/strong> together numerous <strong>authorization for meditating on various peaceful and wrathful yidams.<\/strong> This collection was composed by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.karmapa.org\/karma-kagyu\/lives\/9th-karmapa-wangchuk-dorje\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">9th Karmapa Wangchuk Dorje<\/a> (1556\u20131603) and relies upon the traditions of the previous Karmapas, notably 6th Karmapa Tongwa D\u00f6nden and 8th Karmapa Miky\u00f6 Dorje, as well as previous compilations.
