\"\"<\/span>\u201cIn January 1975, I was in Geneva with Lama Namgyal. I was taking care of the 16th Karmapa\u2019s birds as he was in Zurich. <\/span><\/p>\n

I was waiting for him and the rest of the group so that we could all return to India together. It must have been around four o\u2019clock in the morning when the phone rang. I wasn\u2019t quite awake when I picked it up. <\/span><\/p>\n

On the other end of the line, Karmapa asked me if I would agree to stay to take care of the place that he had visited in Dordogne, in France. <\/span><\/p>\n

I had committed never to refuse Karmapa anything, so I said yes and went back to bed. The next morning, when I woke up, I didn\u2019t know if the phone call was real or if it was a dream!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

This is how Lama Jigme Rinpoche sums up<\/strong> the few minutes that changed his life forever<\/strong>. After spending three months in England waiting for his visa, Lama Jigme Rinpoche arrived at Dhagpo Kagyu Ling on May 3, 1975.<\/strong> He was twenty-six years old. He could barely speak English. He had no idea how long he would be staying.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cFrom Samye Ling in Scotland, Akong Rinpoche, Umze-la and myself<\/strong> arrived by train to Kagyu Dzong, in Paris. We spent one or two days there before taking the train to P\u00e9rigueux,\u201d Jigme Rinpoche recalls. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cA small welcoming committee<\/strong> was waiting for us in what was nothing more than a dilapidated farmhouse. There was Bernard Benson, Mr. Gaillard, the head of the intelligence service at the time, Yahne Le Toumelin, Mr. Tierce, a local farmer, Helen and Franz, two Dutch artists, Leo and Simone Mutsaers, and the mayor of Saint-L\u00e9on. <\/span><\/p>\n

I hadn\u2019t expected to find such a rudimentary place.<\/strong> There was really nothing! Yahne Le Toumelin, Matthieu Ricard\u2019s mother, would come every day by bicycle from Chanteloube to bring us food. Then, gradually, people came.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The early days were spartan and the place was not yet Dhagpo Kagyu Ling. In order to remain as close as possible to what he had learned, Lama Jigme Rinpoche copied Gampopa\u2019s work, <\/strong><\/span>The Ornament of Precious Liberation <\/span><\/i>by hand.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Dhagpo<\/p>\n

A half century has gone by\u2026 Today, on this same date, Lama Jigme Rinpoche is guiding practitioners in the Chenrezig Course in Dhagpo Kagyu Ling\u2019s Institute. A brief summary of his activities is available on his website.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

His spiritual education<\/strong> began in Tsurphu, Tibet,<\/strong> at the age of six, under Rangjung Rigpe Dorge, His Holiness the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa, and continued in Rumtek, India<\/strong>. While this traditional education involves learning about the philosophy and practice of the Buddhadharma, its founding principle is known in Tibetan as <\/strong><\/span>tongwa gy\u00fcnpe chalen <\/i><\/strong>\u0f58\u0f50\u0f7c\u0f44\u0f0b\u0f56\u0f0b\u0f62\u0f92\u0fb1\u0f74\u0f53\u0f0b\u0f54\u0f60\u0f7a\u0f0b\u0f55\u0fb1\u0f42\u0f0b\u0f63\u0f7a\u0f53\u0f0d,<\/strong> an expression that can be translated as <\/span>assimilate through continuous observation<\/span><\/i>. Like learning a craft, it involves being present to see what is not necessarily obvious; to listen to words that are said as much as how they are said; to observe gestures and practice in reproducing them; to ask questions and really listen to the answers; to understand through a process of immersion; to fully integrate. This way of learning the Dharma is more about living it, experiencing it as close as possible to the awakened presence of the 16th Karmapa. It is less about learning to do as about learning to be.<\/span><\/p>\n

When Jigme Rinpoche was sixteen years old,<\/strong> Karmapa entrusted him with the delicate task of receiving and welcoming any person who came to Rumtek to meet with His Holiness, from local villagers to the King of Sikkim, the last Dharma Raja Palden Thondup Namgyal (1923-1982), or the first westerners interested in Dharma who found their way to Rumtek. This involved receiving them and being fully available to everyone, regardless of their status.<\/span><\/p>\n

Thus began, with the utmost discretion, an entire life of service to the Gyalwa Karmapa<\/strong>\u2014first to the 16th, Rangjung Rigpe Dorje, then to the 17th, Trinley Thaye Dorje. The Buddha Karmapa is a <\/span>nirmanakaya<\/span><\/i>, an emanation of enlightenment; as such, his sole intention is to accomplish the good of all sentient beings. To serve Karmapa, whatever his incarnation, is therefore to dedicate one\u2019s life to the service of others.<\/span><\/p>\n

Five decades later,<\/strong> on May 3, 2025, Lama Jigme Rinpoche is now seventy-six years old. He speaks English. He never left and has French citizenship. He continues to be available and to welcome anyone who wishes to meet him with kindness and patience. He continues to share the Buddhadharma at Dhagpo Kagyu Ling and throughout the world. He continues to do everything to make the Dharma accessible by creating the conditions for this to be possible today and for future generations.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lama Jigme Rinpoche continues to dedicate himself to others and to serve the Karmapa, with utmost discretion.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

This day will open with a smoke offering practice<\/strong> (sang puja) from 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. in the Institute<\/strong>.

<\/span>The ritual will be followed by Jigme Rinpoche\u2019s teaching for the Chenrezig Progressive Curriculum of Study & Meditation, onsite and online. <\/span><\/p>\n

The teaching is given in English and translated<\/strong> into French, Spanish and German. <\/span><\/p>\n

J\u2019avais pris l\u2019engagement de ne jamais rien refuser \u00e0 Karmapa, alors j\u2019ai dit \u201cd\u2019accord\u201d et je suis retourn\u00e9 me coucher. Le lendemain, au r\u00e9veil, je ne savais pas si ce coup de t\u00e9l\u00e9phone \u00e9tait r\u00e9el ou si c\u2019\u00e9tait un r\u00eave ! \u00bb<\/span><\/p>

C\u2019est en ces mots que lama Jigm\u00e9 Rinpoch\u00e9 r\u00e9sume<\/strong> les quelques minutes qui ont chang\u00e9 sa vie \u00e0 jamais<\/strong>. Apr\u00e8s un s\u00e9jour de trois mois en Angleterre, en attendant son visa, lama Jigme\u0301 Rinpoche\u0301 est arrive\u0301 a\u0300 Dhagpo Kagyu Ling le 3 mai 1975. Il avait 26 ans.<\/strong> Il ne parlait gu\u00e8re anglais. Il n\u2019avait aucune id\u00e9e de la dur\u00e9e de son s\u00e9jour\u2026<\/span><\/p>

\u00ab De Samy\u00e9 Ling, en \u00c9cosse, Akong Rinpoch\u00e9, Umz\u00e9-la, et moi-m\u00eame<\/strong> sommes arriv\u00e9s en train \u00e0 Kagy\u00fc Dzong, \u00e0 Paris. Nous y avons pass\u00e9 un ou deux jours avant de prendre le train pour P\u00e9rigueux. Un petit comit\u00e9 d\u2019accueil<\/strong> nous attendait dans ce qui n\u2019\u00e9tait qu\u2019un corps de ferme d\u00e9labr\u00e9. Il y avait Bernard Benson, le chef des renseignements g\u00e9n\u00e9raux de l\u2019\u00e9poque, M. Gaillard, Yahne Le Toumelin, un fermier du coin, M. Tiesse, deux artistes hollandais, Helen et Franz, Leo et Simone Mutsaers, ainsi que le maire de Saint-L\u00e9on. <\/span><\/p>

Je ne m\u2019attendais pas \u00e0 trouver un lieu aussi rudimentaire<\/strong>. Il n\u2019y avait vraiment rien ! Yahne Le Toumelin, la m\u00e8re de Matthieu Ricard, venait tous les jours \u00e0 bicyclette, depuis Chanteloube, pour nous apporter \u00e0 manger. Puis, progressivement, des personnes sont venues. \u00bb<\/span><\/p>

Un demi-sie\u0300cle s\u2019est e\u0301coule\u0301\u2026 Aujourd\u2019hui, a\u0300 cette me<\/span>\u0302<\/span>me date, lama Jigm\u00e9 Rinpoch\u00e9 guide les pratiquants du cursus Chenrezik dans l\u2019Institut de Dhagpo Kagyu Ling. Son \u00e9ducation<\/strong> spirituelle commence \u00e0 Tsurphu<\/strong>, au Tibet<\/strong>, d\u00e8s l\u2019\u00e2ge de six ans, aupr\u00e8s de Rangjung Rikp\u00e9 Dorj\u00e9, Sa Saintet\u00e9 le XVI<\/span>\u1d49 <\/span>Gyalwa Karmapa ; elle se poursuit \u00e0 Rumtek<\/strong>, en Inde<\/strong>. Si cette \u00e9ducation traditionnelle implique un apprentissage en mati\u00e8re de philosophie et de pratique du Dharma du Bouddha, son principe fondateur est appel\u00e9 en tib\u00e9tain <\/strong><\/span>tongwa gy\u00fcnp\u00e9 chalen <\/i><\/strong>\u0f58\u0f50\u0f7c\u0f44\u0f0b\u0f56\u0f0b\u0f62\u0f92\u0fb1\u0f74\u0f53\u0f0b\u0f54\u0f60\u0f7a\u0f0b\u0f55\u0fb1\u0f42\u0f0b\u0f63\u0f7a\u0f53\u0f0d<\/strong>, expression qui peut se traduire par <\/span>assimiler par une observation continue<\/span><\/i>. \u00c0 l\u2019image d\u2019un apprentissage artisanal, il s\u2019agit d\u2019\u00eatre pr\u00e9sent pour voir ce qui n\u2019est pas forc\u00e9ment le plus \u00e9vident ; pour \u00e9couter les paroles tout autant que les fa\u00e7ons de parler ; pour observer les gestes et s\u2019entra\u00eener \u00e0 les reproduire ; pour poser des questions et vraiment \u00e9couter les r\u00e9ponses ; pour comprendre gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 un processus d\u2019impr\u00e9gnation. \u00c0 l\u2019\u00e2ge de 16 ans<\/strong>, Karmapa lui confie la t\u00e2che d\u00e9licate de recevoir et d\u2019accueillir \u00e0 Rumtek toute personne qui vient rencontrer Sa Saintet\u00e9, depuis les villageois de la r\u00e9gion jusqu\u2019au roi du Sikkim, le dernier Dharma Raja Palden Thondup Namgyal (1923-1982), en passant par les premiers Occidentaux int\u00e9ress\u00e9s par le Dharma qui trouvent le chemin jusqu\u2019\u00e0 Rumtek. Il s\u2019agit de recevoir chacun et d\u2019\u00eatre pleinement disponible pour lui, quel que soit son statut.<\/span><\/p>

Le Bouddha Karmapa est un <\/span>nirmanakaya<\/span><\/i>, une \u00e9manation de l\u2019\u00e9veil ; en tant que tel, son unique intention est d\u2019accomplir le bien des \u00eatres sensibles. Servir Karmapa, quelle que soit son incarnation, signifie donc d\u00e9dier sa vie au service des autres.<\/span><\/p>

Cinq d\u00e9cennies apr\u00e8s,<\/strong> le 3 mai 2025, lama Jigm\u00e9 Rinpoch\u00e9 a 76 ans. Il parle anglais. Il n\u2019est jamais reparti et est devenu fran\u00e7ais.<\/span><\/p>

Il continue d\u2019\u00eatre disponible et d\u2019accueillir quiconque demande \u00e0 le rencontrer, avec bienveillance et patience. Il continue de partager le Dharma du Bouddha, \u00e0 Dhagpo Kagyu Ling et dans le monde entier. Il continue de mettre tout en \u0153uvre pour rendre le Dharma accessible a\u0300 tous, en cre\u0301ant les conditions pour que cela soit possible aujourd\u2019hui et pour les ge\u0301ne\u0301rations futures.<\/span><\/p>

Lama Jigm\u00e9 Rinpoch\u00e9 continue de se d\u00e9dier aux autres<\/strong> et de servir le Karmapa<\/strong>, en toute discr\u00e9tion.<\/span><\/p><\/div>
