After three years, three months, and three days in seclusion from the outside world, the first group of <\/span>fourteen men and five women<\/b> to complete the <\/span>traditional retreat <\/b>emerged on June 11, 1987 from their <\/span>drupkang<\/span><\/i>, retreat center, at Dhagpo Kundreul Ling, and then traveled to Dhagpo Kagyu Ling on June 13,1987.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the presence of Lama Gendun Rinpoche and Lama Teunzang, the retreatants were welcomed by their families, friends, and practitioners for this joyous occasion. The 16th Gyalwa Karmapa indicated <\/span>five resources for the Buddha’s teachings<\/span><\/a> to take root and remain in a place where they are unknown <\/span><\/p>\n

Providing the conditions for the accomplishment of retreats is one of them. Thus, this first traditional retreat guided by Lama Gendun Rinpoche is an important step in anchoring the blessing of the Buddha Dharma and meditative practice in the West.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

A month before, everyone was stressed, but at the same time, Gendun Rinpoche had told us how to behave when leaving retreat, both in terms of outward appearance and spiritual advice,\u201d recalls Nicolas Henry, who then participated in construction work at Dhagpo Kagyu Ling after this first retreat. “He was very attentive to us. We could sense his pride in having led us to the end of the three years.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

On the road to the Auvergne for the occasion, the late Bernard Lebeau, president of Dhagpo Kagyu Ling, recalls that as he approached the site, <\/span><\/p>\n

a huge double rainbow shone before us in the direction of Kundreul Ling. The heavy rain stopped.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

For Lama Deundam, then aged 25, this outing was eagerly awaited by the retreatants. <\/span><\/p>\n

\n

I was happy to get out. We had completed a cycle, we had reached the end, it was something important, but at the same time we saw the need to spend three more years.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The path was set for this young practitioner who had come to Dhagpo Kagyu Ling in 1982, completing short retreats with Pawo Rinpoche at the Nehnang Samten Choling center in Les Tranchats, in the Dordogne, and leaving behind his classical guitar studies at the Bordeaux Conservatory. <\/span><\/p>\n

\n

It was the end of a cycle, but we wanted to begin a second retreat.  Lama Gendun had asked us, and almost all of us were in favor of it. We knew we were going to be away for about a month and a half and that we would return to Le Bost to build the second retreat center. We knew our time out was temporary<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

A large Mahakala puja was held the next day, and on June 13, the first retreatants set off for Dhagpo Kagyu Ling, where the Dorje Pamo ritual, practiced throughout the third year of retreat, was performed.<\/span><\/p>\n

On the same day, <\/span>the 3rd Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoche traveled to Dhagpo<\/b>, where he gave the Tara, Dorje Drolo, and White Manjushri empowerments to the retreatants along with more than 600 people gathered in the tent. “It was the highlight of coming out of retreat. There was a buzz, something very alive,” recalls Deundam. Rinpoche also spent a whole day giving the disciplines of fully ordained monks <\/span>(gelong) <\/span><\/i>in the small temple.<\/span><\/p>\n

The retreat group also visited La Pechardie, the residence and practice center of the eminent Nyingma master Dudjom Jigdral Yeshe Dorje, not far from Dhagpo on the C\u00f4te de Jor. Dudjom Rinpoche had passed away in January 1987, and his body remained in the Dordogne for a year and a half before being transported to Nepal.<\/span><\/p>\n

Most of the retreatants then returned to Dhagpo Kundreul Ling, where <\/span>they began construction of the second retreat center<\/b> before embarking on a second<\/span> retreat in November 1987<\/span>\u2026<\/b><\/p>\n

The retreatants\u2019 arrival to Dhagpo Kagyu Ling as well as the Institute\u2019s consecration will be marked by a day of practice at Dhagpo Kagyu Ling, followed by a friendly tea-time get together on June 13. <\/span>

Le 11 juin 1987, quatorze hommes et cinq femmes<\/strong> sortent du drupkang<\/em>, le centre de retraite de Dhagpo Kundreul Ling. En retrait complet du monde ext\u00e9rieur, ce premier groupe vient d\u2019accomplir la retraite traditionnelle<\/strong> de trois ans, trois mois et trois jours.<\/p>

En ce jour de r\u00e9jouissance, en pr\u00e9sence de lama Guendune Rinpoch\u00e9 et de lama Teunsang, les retraitants sont accueillis par leur famille, leurs amis et les pratiquants. Le 13 juin, ils se rendront en Dordogne, \u00e0 Dhagpo Kagyu Ling.<\/p>

Le XVIe<\/sup> Gyalwa Karmapa avait indiqu\u00e9 les cinq ressources n\u00e9cessaires \u00e0 la fondation et au d\u00e9veloppement p\u00e9rennes de l\u2019enseignement du Bouddha en un lieu o\u00f9 il est inconnu. Offrir les conditions pour l\u2019accomplissement de retraites<\/a> \u00e9tait l\u2019une d\u2019entre elles. Aussi cette premi\u00e8re retraite traditionnelle, guid\u00e9e par lama Gendune Rinpoch\u00e9, constitue-t-elle une \u00e9tape importante dans l\u2019ancrage de la b\u00e9n\u00e9diction et de la pratique m\u00e9ditative en Occident.<\/p>

Un mois avant la sortie, tout le monde \u00e9tait stress\u00e9, mais en m\u00eame temps, Guendune Rinpoch\u00e9 nous avait expliqu\u00e9 le bon comportement \u00e0 avoir en sortant de retraite, que cela concerne l\u2019aspect ext\u00e9rieur ou int\u00e9rieur, l\u2019\u00e9tat d\u2019esprit. Il \u00e9tait tr\u00e8s attentif \u00e0 nous. On sentait de sa part une fiert\u00e9 de nous avoir men\u00e9s au terme des trois ans, se souvient Nicolas Henry, qui participera, apr\u00e8s cette premi\u00e8re retraite, aux travaux de construction de Dhagpo Kagyu Ling.<\/p><\/blockquote>

Pr\u00e9sent pour cet \u00e9v\u00e9nement, le pr\u00e9sident de Dhagpo Kagyu Ling Bernard Lebeau, aujourd\u2019hui d\u00e9c\u00e9d\u00e9, \u00e9voquait ce souvenir ainsi :<\/p>

Quand nous nous approch\u00e2mes du lieu un double arc-en-ciel, immense, resplendissait devant nous dans la direction de Kundreul Ling. Et la pluie, alors abondante, cessa.<\/p><\/blockquote>

Pour Lama Deundam, alors \u00e2g\u00e9 de 25 ans, cette sortie \u00e9tait attendue par les retraitants :<\/p>

J\u2019\u00e9tais heureux de sortir, on avait accompli un cycle, on \u00e9tait all\u00e9 au bout, c\u2019\u00e9tait quelque chose d\u2019important, mais en m\u00eame temps on voyait la n\u00e9cessit\u00e9 de passer trois ans de plus.<\/p><\/blockquote>

Le chemin \u00e9tait trac\u00e9 pour ce jeune pratiquant. Venu \u00e0 Dhagpo Kagyu Ling en 1982, il avait accompli de courtes retraites chez Pawo Rinpoch\u00e9, au centre Nehnang Samten Choling situ\u00e9 aux Tranchats, en Dordogne, et il avait quitt\u00e9 ses \u00e9tudes de guitare classique au conservatoire de Bordeaux.<\/p>

C\u2019\u00e9tait la fin d\u2019un cycle, mais on voulait amorcer une deuxi\u00e8me retraite. Lama Guendune nous avait pos\u00e9 la question et nous y \u00e9tions presque tous favorables. On savait qu\u2019on allait sortir pour environ un mois et demi et qu\u2019on allait retourner au Bost pour construire le deuxi\u00e8me centre de retraite. On savait que c\u2019\u00e9tait une sortie provisoire.<\/p><\/blockquote>

Le lendemain de la sortie s\u2019est d\u00e9roul\u00e9e une grande puja<\/em> de Mahakala. Puis, le 13 juin, les primo-retraitants ont pris la route pour Dhagpo Kagyu Ling, o\u00f9 a \u00e9t\u00e9 accompli le rituel de Dorj\u00e9 Pamo, pratiqu\u00e9 pendant toute la troisi\u00e8me ann\u00e9e de retraite.<\/p>

\"SortieC\u2019est ce m\u00eame jour que le III\u1d49 Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoch\u00e9 s\u2019est rendu \u00e0 Dhagpo<\/strong>, o\u00f9 il a conf\u00e9r\u00e9 les initiations de Tara, de Dorj\u00e9 Drolo et de Manjushri Blanc aux retraitants ainsi qu\u2019\u00e0 plus de 600 personnes r\u00e9unies sous la tente. \u00ab C\u2019\u00e9tait l\u2019\u00e9v\u00e9nement marquant de la sortie de retraite. Il y avait une effervescence, c\u2019\u00e9tait quelque chose de tr\u00e8s vivant qui \u00e9tait l\u00e0 \u00bb, se rappelle Deundam. Dans le petit temple, sur une journ\u00e9e enti\u00e8re, Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoch\u00e9 a \u00e9galement donn\u00e9 les disciplines de moine pleinement ordonn\u00e9. (gelong<\/em>).<\/p>

Le groupe de retraite s\u2019est aussi rendu non loin de Dhagpo, sur la C\u00f4te de Jor, \u00e0 la P\u00e9chardie, le lieu de r\u00e9sidence et de pratique de l\u2019\u00e9minent ma\u00eetre nyingmapa Dudjom Jigdral Yesh\u00e9 Dorj\u00e9. Dudjom Rinpoch\u00e9 \u00e9tait d\u00e9c\u00e9d\u00e9 en janvier 1987, son corps \u00e9tait rest\u00e9 un an et demi en Dordogne avant d\u2019\u00eatre transport\u00e9 au N\u00e9pal.<\/p>

Puis la plupart des retraitants reprennent la route de Dhagpo Kundreul Ling o\u00f9 ils se lancent dans la construction du deuxi\u00e8me centre de retraite<\/strong>, avant d\u2019entamer une seconde retraite en novembre 1987.<\/p>
