From June 13, 2013<\/b>, <\/span>Dhagpo Kagyu Ling\u2019s Institute was inaugurated<\/b> in the presence of several thousand people from all over the world, fulfilling one of the 16th Karmapa’s wishes to make the Buddha’s authentic teaching accessible to as many people as possible.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt is our wish that this new building will be able to welcome all those who aspire to deepen their knowledge of the workings of the mind, body and world, whether through the teachings, the study of texts, or in-depth research,\u201d declared the late Mipham Ch\u00f6kyi Lodr\u00f6, His Holiness the 14th Shamarpa,<\/span> in his opening speech<\/b>, in the presence of representatives of the state, local authorities, the Catholic, Protestant and Orthodox churches, as well as other Buddhist traditions. <\/span><\/p>\n

In Buddhist philosophy, there are important insights that clarify our discernment. If we are always able to develop this ability, then nothing can go wrong: human rights, world peace, and even ultimate happiness will be achievable through our ability to assess things in the world fairly.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

This inauguration <\/span>marked an important step towards the integration of Buddhism on French soil<\/b>, guided by a spirit of openness, dialogue and sharing. As the Dordogne sub-prefect pointed out on the day of the inauguration, <\/span><\/p>\n

\n

For thirty years now, the Dhagpo Kagyu Ling center has fulfilled, in this harmonious and simple setting, its vocation as entrusted to it by the 16th Karmapa. Now, with the Institute, it offers Westerners easy access to the fundamental texts, as well as the opportunity to meet and exchange ideas with Buddhist scholars.\u201d The mayor of Saint-L\u00e9on-sur-V\u00e9z\u00e8re, meanwhile, celebrated the center’s \u201cknowledge of how to live together\u201d and \u201cthe open-mindedness that Buddhist thought brings to our local culture.\u201d He notes that \u201ctoday’s inauguration of this magnificent building is the culmination of a long project and the result of constructive dialogue with the municipality.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Indeed,<\/span> it took almost fifteen years<\/b> for the causes and conditions to come together for this project to see the light of day. As early as the late 1980s, an Institute for Advanced Studies in Tibetology was to be built on the C\u00f4te de Jor. Nicolas Henry, who had been working on the construction of infrastructure in Dhagpo since his first retreat in 1987, supported Jigme Rinpoche in the design of this project. <\/span>This first project was eventually put on hold, <\/b>to be resumed with the prospect of better integration into the natural setting. The C\u00f4te de Jor site, now classified as culturally significant, could no longer be built on. In the 90s, efforts were refocused on the Dhagpo Kagyu Ling site in Landrevie. A building permit was obtained and earthworks began. <\/span>In 1998, the design of the project progressed<\/b>, and the building permit was applied for and granted. Heterogeneous soil conditions made it difficult to construct the foundations, but the technical challenge was overcome, and they were finally built.<\/span><\/p>\n

On August 15, 2002,<\/b> Thaye Dorje, His Holiness the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa, and the 14th Shamarpa <\/span>consecrated the foundations<\/b> of what was to become the Institute, and the cornerstone was laid. However, the Tibetan architectural style of the project did not meet with unanimous approval in the region. In 2006, Jigme Rinpoche decided to put the project on hold. In 2011, speaking at the Dhagpo General Assembly, he explained, <\/span><\/p>\n

\n

If we build a place for the Karmapa\u2019s activity to take place, it’s important that the project is supported and accepted by the local population, and that the overall development is harmonious. Otherwise, it’s no good for anyone and nothing will really unfold.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The project was then interrupted to be revised and better adapted to the location and needs. Several years of gestation were necessary. Jigme Rinpoche often reminded us that, beyond the building itself, what’s most important and a source of value is what unfolds within.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2010, Jigme Rinpoche asked Nicolas to act as representative of the construction manager for the building of the future Institute. Fran\u00e7ois Coq, an architect based in Sarlat, was selected. Jigme Rinpoche continues,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

We changed the project by working with a local architect on a more adapted approach. As we’re in a protected zone, the Architecte des B\u00e2timents de France has to approve the project. There is no P\u00e9rigord-style model for a building of this size.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The architect proposed a building that blends into the local environment, with two essential features required by Dhagpo: a large practice hall and a library equipped with a space sheltered from the sun’s rays to provide optimal preservation conditions. <\/span><\/p>\n

The first sketches focused on <\/span>the form of a wave,<\/b> inspired by the rolling hills of Chaban Village above Dhagpo.<\/span> The wooden slats <\/b>evoked Perigourdin tobacco drying sheds. From there,<\/span> the project developed collectively<\/b>. A team of eight people from Dhagpo was formed to reflect on and define the community\u2019s needs for the future. This group met regularly with the architect. In this way, the building came to house spaces for Dhagpo\u2019s daily functioning\u2014offices, a study hall, conference rooms and a reception desk\u2014in addition to fulfilling its essential functions as a teaching space and library. \u201cThis helps the community be cohesive. Allowing people to work together is one of the virtues of this building,\u201d says Nicolas. The building was erected in two years<\/strong> with no breaks in construction.<\/span><\/p>\n

The collective aspect also extended to financing the project. The money that was previously raised had been set aside for the project. For the remaining amount, Jigme Rinpoche did not wish to call on banks but rather offer every person the possibility of connecting to Karmapa\u2019s activity by contributing with an individual loan or donation. A team took care of fundraising based on the following guidelines, <\/span>\u201cThe Institute: A Place for All, Built by All.\u201d<\/b> It was a good bet. Presentations of the project took place during large events, such as the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa\u2019s visit in 2012. Practitioners from around the world supported the project. Every donation, no matter how modest, is a connection with the beneficial activities of the bodhisattvas Karmapa and Shamarpa. The Institute\u2014comprising a final budget of 4 million Euros including landscaping\u2014<\/span>was fully financed in 2018,<\/b> thanks to the involvement of more than four thousand people and without a single bank loan.<\/span><\/p>\n

The inauguration took place June 13 to 16, 2013. Initially, Karmapa and Shamarpa both planned to be present. Unfortunately, Mipham Rinpoche\u2019s failing health required Karmapa\u2019s presence at his side. Shamarpa and Lama Jigme Rinpoche, with the support of Sherab Gyaltsen Rinpoche, Trinlay Rinpoche, Lama Teunzang, Lama Trehor and monks sent by Karmapa carried out the program of these unforgettable days. Shamarpa <\/span>taught a fundamental text <\/b>for practitioners of the Karma Kagy\u00fc lineage, the <\/span>Mahamudra Wishing Prayer<\/span><\/i>, by the 3rd Karmapa Rangjung Dorje, and he conferred <\/span>Gyalwa Gyamtso empowerment<\/b> to more than 1,600 people. In addition to this blessing-filled program, there were <\/span>round tables<\/b> organized along with a presentation of the history of how the empowerment of Gyalwa Gyamtso was transmitted through the lineage.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis building is very well-designed, thought out by the team from that time\u2014it is a reflection of the community\u2019s maturity at a particular time. It was built in two years. There were no interruptions in construction for financial reasons, technical reasons or other causes. All the elements were brought together: companies, materials, money and intellectual power of reflection. Thus things happened naturally,\u201d said Nicolas. He commends the fact that the Institute brings people together in a single building: the library, reading room, accounting, maintenance, study hall, secretary desk. \u201cPeople gather in a single place, see each other and exchange. This helps community cohesiveness. Allowing people to work together is one of the virtues of this building. And when everything is brought together in one place, we also save on building costs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Twelve years later, <\/b>during the Chenrezig Study and Meditation Curriculum Course in May 2025, Lama Jigme Rinpoche emphasized the Institute\u2019s vocation of allowing to share the Buddha\u2019s teaching in an authentic way and to learn together,<\/span><\/p>\n

Some people find meaning in listening to Buddhist teachings. Some wish to contribute by repeating or giving teachings themselves. This combination participates in the accumulation of merit\u2014that of bringing the Dharma here to this region of the world. The Institute develops its qualities in a very simple way, year after year, which leads to a very important result. A kind of mutual support takes place, allowing to combine Dharma study and practice based on experience. This development takes place naturally.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

The retreatants\u2019 arrival to Dhagpo Kagyu Ling as well as the Institute\u2019s consecration<\/strong> will be marked by a day of practice at Dhagpo Kagyu Ling, followed by a friendly tea-time get together on June 13.<\/p>\n

Du 13 au 16 juin 2013<\/b>, c\u2019est en pr\u00e9sence de plusieurs milliers de personnes venues du monde entier que <\/span>l\u2019Institut de Dhagpo Kagyu Ling a \u00e9t\u00e9 inaugur\u00e9<\/b>, r\u00e9alisant l\u2019un des souhaits du XVI<\/span>e<\/span> Karmapa pour que l\u2019enseignement authentique du Bouddha puisse \u00eatre accessible au plus grand nombre.<\/span><\/p>

\u00ab Nous souhaitons que ce nouveau b\u00e2timent puisse accueillir toutes celles et ceux qui aspirent \u00e0 approfondir leur connaissance du fonctionnement de l\u2019esprit, du corps et du monde, que ce soit au travers des enseignements, de l\u2019\u00e9tude des textes, ou de recherches approfondies\u00bb, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9\u00a0 Mipham Ch\u00f6kyi Lodr\u00f6, Sa Saintet\u00e9 le XIV<\/span>e<\/span> Shamarpa,<\/span> dans son discours d\u2019ouverture<\/b>, en pr\u00e9sence des repr\u00e9sentants de l\u2019\u00c9tat, des collectivit\u00e9s territoriales, des \u00e9glises catholique, protestante et orthodoxe, ainsi que d\u2019autres traditions bouddhiques. <\/span><\/p>

Dans la philosophie bouddhique, il y a des connaissances importantes qui permettent de clarifier notre discernement. Si nous sommes toujours en mesure de d\u00e9velopper cette capacit\u00e9, alors rien ne peut se d\u00e9grader : les droits de l\u2019homme, la paix dans le monde, et m\u00eame le bonheur ultime pourront \u00eatre obtenus gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 notre capacit\u00e9 \u00e0 \u00e9valuer les choses du monde de mani\u00e8re juste.\u00a0<\/p><\/blockquote>

Cette inauguration <\/span>marque un pas important vers l\u2019int\u00e9gration du bouddhisme sur le sol fran\u00e7ais<\/b>, guid\u00e9 par un esprit d\u2019ouverture, de dialogue et de partage. Comme le souligne le sous-pr\u00e9fet de Dordogne le jour de l\u2019inauguration : <\/span><\/p>

Depuis maintenant trente ans, le centre Dhagpo Kagyu Ling accomplit, dans ce cadre harmonieux et simple, sa vocation telle qu\u2019elle lui a \u00e9t\u00e9 confi\u00e9e par le XVIe<\/sup> Karmapa. D\u00e9sormais, avec l\u2019Institut, il offre aux occidentaux un acc\u00e8s facile aux textes fondamentaux, mais aussi l\u2019opportunit\u00e9 de rencontrer des \u00e9rudits bouddhistes et d\u2019\u00e9changer avec eux. \u00bb Le maire de Saint-L\u00e9on-sur-V\u00e9z\u00e8re, quant \u00e0 lui, c\u00e9l\u00e8bre le \u00ab savoir vivre ensemble \u00bb du centre et \u00ab l\u2019ouverture d\u2019esprit qu\u2019apporte \u00e0 notre culture locale la pens\u00e9e bouddhiste. \u00bb Il note que \u00ab l\u2019inauguration, aujourd\u2019hui, de ce magnifique b\u00e2timent est l\u2019aboutissement d\u2019un long travail et le r\u00e9sultat d\u2019un dialogue constructif avec la municipalit\u00e9.\u00a0<\/p><\/blockquote>

En effet, <\/span>il aura fallu pr\u00e8s de quinze ans<\/b> pour que les causes et conditions soient r\u00e9unies afin que ce projet puisse voir le jour. D\u00e8s la fin des ann\u00e9es quatre-vingt, un Institut d\u2019\u00e9tudes sup\u00e9rieures en tib\u00e9tologie devait \u00eatre r\u00e9alis\u00e9 sur la C\u00f4te de Jor. Nicolas H., qui travaillait sur la construction d\u2019infrastructures \u00e0 Dhagpo \u00e0 sa sortie de la premi\u00e8re retraite en 1987, \u00e9paule Jigm\u00e9 Rinpoch\u00e9 pour la conception de ce projet. Ce premier projet est finalement<\/span> mis en veille <\/b>pour \u00eatre repris avec la perspective d\u2019une meilleure int\u00e9gration dans le cadre naturel. Le terrain de la C\u00f4te de Jor, d\u00e9sormais class\u00e9, devient <\/span>inconstructible<\/b>. Les efforts se recentrent sur le site de Dhagpo Kagyu Ling, \u00e0 Landrevie, dans les ann\u00e9es 90. Un permis de construire est obtenu et les travaux de terrassement sont effectu\u00e9s. <\/span>En 1998, la conception du projet avance,<\/b> un permis de construire est d\u00e9pos\u00e9 et accept\u00e9. Du fait d\u2019un sol h\u00e9t\u00e9rog\u00e8ne, la construction des fondations se r\u00e9v\u00e8le difficile mais le d\u00e9fi technique est surmont\u00e9 et elles sont finalement r\u00e9alis\u00e9es.<\/span><\/p>

Le 15 ao\u00fbt 2002<\/b>, la dalle de ce qui deviendra l\u2019Institut est consacr\u00e9e par Thay\u00e9 Dorj\u00e9, Sa Saintet\u00e9 le XVII<\/span>e<\/span> Gyalwa Karmapa, ainsi que par le XIV<\/span>e<\/span> Shamarpa, et <\/span>la premi\u00e8re pierre est pos\u00e9e.<\/b> Cependant, le style architectural tib\u00e9tain du projet ne fait pas l\u2019unanimit\u00e9 dans la r\u00e9gion. En 2006, Jigm\u00e9 Rinpoch\u00e9 d\u00e9cide de mettre <\/span>le projet en pause<\/b>. En 2011, lors d\u2019une intervention pendant l\u2019assembl\u00e9e g\u00e9n\u00e9rale de Dhagpo, il explique ceci : <\/span><\/p>

Si nous construisons un lieu pour que s\u2019y d\u00e9ploie l\u2019activit\u00e9 de Karmapa, il est important que le projet soit soutenu et accept\u00e9 par la population locale, et que le d\u00e9veloppement global soit harmonieux, sinon ce n\u2019est bon pour personne et rien ne pourra vraiment se d\u00e9ployer.<\/p><\/blockquote>

Le projet est alors interrompu pour \u00eatre r\u00e9vis\u00e9 et mieux adapt\u00e9 au lieu et aux besoins. Plusieurs ann\u00e9es de gestation sont n\u00e9cessaires. Jigm\u00e9 Rinpoch\u00e9 a souvent rappel\u00e9 qu\u2019au-del\u00e0 du b\u00e2timent lui-m\u00eame, ce qui est surtout important et source de valeur, c\u2019est ce qui se d\u00e9ploie \u00e0 l\u2019int\u00e9rieur.<\/span><\/p>

En 2010,<\/b> Jigm\u00e9 Rinpoch\u00e9 demande \u00e0 Nicolas H. d\u2019\u00eatre le repr\u00e9sentant du ma\u00eetre d\u2019ouvrage pour la construction du futur Institut. Fran\u00e7ois Coq, architecte \u00e0 Sarlat, est retenu. Jigm\u00e9 Rinpoch\u00e9 poursuit : <\/span><\/p>

Nous avons chang\u00e9 le projet en travaillant avec un architecte local sur un principe plus adapt\u00e9. Comme nous nous situons en zone prot\u00e9g\u00e9e, l\u2019Architecte des B\u00e2timents de France doit valider le projet. Il n\u2019existe pas de mod\u00e8le de style p\u00e9rigourdin pour un b\u00e2timent de cette taille.\u00a0<\/p><\/blockquote>

L\u2019architecte propose un b\u00e2timent qui s\u2019int\u00e8gre dans l\u2019environnement local, avec deux incontournables requis par Dhagpo<\/span> :<\/span> une grande salle de culte et une biblioth\u00e8que \u00e9quip\u00e9e d\u2019un espace \u00e0 l\u2019abri des rayonnements solaires pour fournir des conditions de pr\u00e9servation optimales. Les toutes premi\u00e8res esquisses se concentrent sur <\/span>le toit en forme de vague,<\/b> inspir\u00e9es par les collines arrondies du village de Chaban au-dessus de Dhagpo.<\/span> Le bardage en bois <\/b>rappelle les hangars \u00e0 tabac p\u00e9rigourdins. Puis <\/span>le projet s\u2019\u00e9labore collectivement.<\/b> Une \u00e9quipe de huit personnes de Dhagpo, <\/span>constitu\u00e9e <\/span>pour r\u00e9fl\u00e9chir et d\u00e9finir les besoins de la communaut\u00e9 en fonction de l\u2019avenir, se r\u00e9unit r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement avec l\u2019architecte.<\/span> C\u2019est ainsi qu\u2019au-del\u00e0 de ses fonctions essentielles \u2013 l\u2019enseignement et la biblioth\u00e8que \u2013<\/span> le lieu abrite aussi des espaces pour la gestion <\/b>de Dhagpo au quotidien : bureaux, salle d\u2019\u00e9tude, salle de r\u00e9union et secr\u00e9tariat. \u00ab Cela aide \u00e0 une coh\u00e9sion communautaire. Permettre aux gens de travailler ensemble est l\u2019une des vertus de ce b\u00e2timent \u00bb, dit Nicolas H. Le <\/span>b\u00e2timent se construit en deux ans,<\/b> sans interruption du chantier.<\/span><\/p>

Cette dimension collective est inscrite dans le financement m\u00eame du projet. L\u2019argent d\u00e9j\u00e0 r\u00e9uni avait \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9serv\u00e9 pour le projet. Pour la suite, Jigm\u00e9 Rinpoch\u00e9 ne souhaite pas faire appel aux banques, mais il souhaite offrir \u00e0 chacun la possibilit\u00e9 de se relier \u00e0 l\u2019activit\u00e9 de Karmapa en y contribuant par un don ou un pr\u00eat individuel. Une \u00e9quipe s\u2019occupe de la recherche de fonds, guid\u00e9e par le mot d\u2019ordre suivant : \u00ab L\u2019Institut : un lieu pour tous, construit par tous \u00bb<\/b>. Pari r\u00e9ussi. Des pr\u00e9sentations du projet sont organis\u00e9es lors de grands \u00e9v\u00e9nements, comme la venue du XVII<\/b>e<\/b><\/sup> Gyalwa Karmapa en 2012<\/b>. Des pratiquants du monde entier soutiennent le projet. Tout don, aussi modeste soit-il, est un lien avec l\u2019activit\u00e9 b\u00e9n\u00e9fique des bodhisattvas Karmapa et Shamarpa. L\u2019Institut, dont le co\u00fbt (avec les am\u00e9nagements ext\u00e9rieurs) s\u2019\u00e9l\u00e8ve \u00e0 quatre millions d\u2019euros, sera enti\u00e8rement financ\u00e9 en 2018<\/b>, gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 l\u2019implication de plus de 4000 personnes et ceci sans aucun emprunt bancaire.<\/p>

L\u2019inauguration<\/b> se d\u00e9roule du 13 au 16 juin 2013. Initialement, Karmapa et Shamarpa devaient tous deux \u00eatre pr\u00e9sents et guider les c\u00e9r\u00e9monies conjointement. Malheureusement, la sant\u00e9 d\u00e9faillante de Mipham Rinpoch\u00e9 retient Karmapa \u00e0 son chevet. Shamarpa avec lama Jigm\u00e9 Rinpoch\u00e9, entour\u00e9s de lama Sh\u00e9rab Gyaltsen Rinpoch\u00e9, Trinlay Rinpoch\u00e9, lama Teunzang, lama Tr\u00e9hor et les moines envoy\u00e9s par Karmapa, assurent le programme de ces journ\u00e9es inoubliables. Shamarpa <\/span>enseigne <\/b>un <\/span>texte fondamental <\/b>pour les pratiquants de la lign\u00e9e karma kagy\u00fc, Les <\/span>Pri\u00e8res de souhaits du mahamudra, <\/span><\/i>\u00e9crit par le III\u1d49 Karmapa <\/span>Rangjung Dorj\u00e9<\/span>, et <\/span>il conf\u00e8re l\u2019initiation de Gyalwa Gyamtso<\/b> \u00e0 plus de 1600 personnes. En plus de ce programme charg\u00e9 de b\u00e9n\u00e9dictions, <\/span>des tables rondes<\/b> sont organis\u00e9es ainsi qu\u2019une pr\u00e9sentation de l\u2019histoire de la lign\u00e9e de transmission de l\u2019initiation de Gyalwa Gyamtso.<\/span><\/p>

\u00ab Ce b\u00e2timent a \u00e9t\u00e9 tr\u00e8s bien con\u00e7u, \u00e9labor\u00e9 par l\u2019\u00e9quipe de l\u2019\u00e9poque \u2013 il est le reflet de la maturit\u00e9 de la communaut\u00e9 \u00e0 un moment donn\u00e9. Il s\u2019est construit en deux ans. Il n\u2019y pas eu d\u2019interruptions du chantier pour raisons financi\u00e8res, techniques ou autres. Tous les \u00e9l\u00e9ments \u00e9taient rassembl\u00e9s : les entreprises, les mat\u00e9riaux, l\u2019argent, les forces intellectuelles de r\u00e9flexion, et donc les choses se faisaient naturellement \u00bb, dit Nicolas. Il salue le fait que l\u2019Institut rassemble les gens en un seul b\u00e2ti : biblioth\u00e8que, salle de lecture, comptabilit\u00e9, maintenance, salle d\u2019\u00e9tude, secr\u00e9tariat. \u00ab Sur un m\u00eame lieu, les gens se retrouvent, se voient, \u00e9changent. Cela aide \u00e0 une coh\u00e9sion communautaire. Permettre aux gens de travailler ensemble est l\u2019une des vertus de ce b\u00e2timent. Et quand tout est regroup\u00e9 sur un m\u00eame espace, on gagne aussi en co\u00fbt de fabrication \u00bb.<\/p>

Douze ans apr\u00e8s<\/strong>, lors du cursus d\u2019\u00e9tude et de m\u00e9ditation de Chenrezik en mai 2025, lama Jigm\u00e9 Rinpoch\u00e9 souligne cette vocation de l\u2019Institut \u00e0 permettre de partager l\u2019enseignement du Bouddha de mani\u00e8re authentique et de l\u2019apprendre ensemble :<\/p>

Certaines personnes trouvent du sens \u00e0 \u00e9couter les enseignements bouddhistes ; certaines souhaitent offrir leur contribution en r\u00e9p\u00e9tant ou en donnant elles-m\u00eames des enseignements. Cette combinaison participe d\u2019une accumulation de m\u00e9rite, celle d\u2019amener le Dharma ici, dans cette r\u00e9gion du monde. L\u2019Institut d\u00e9veloppe ses qualit\u00e9s de mani\u00e8re tr\u00e8s simple, ann\u00e9e apr\u00e8s ann\u00e9e, ce qui conduit \u00e0 un r\u00e9sultat vraiment important. Une forme d\u2019aide mutuelle prend place, permettant d\u2019allier l\u2019\u00e9tude du Dharma et sa pratique, sur la base de l\u2019exp\u00e9rience ; c\u2019est un d\u00e9veloppement qui prend place naturellement.<\/p>
