In June 1982,<\/b> seven months after the parinirvana of the 16th Karmapa Rangjung Rikpe Dorje, the 14th Shamarpa, Mipham Ch\u00f6kyi Lodr\u00f6, now solely responsible for the Karma Kagy\u00fc lineage, initiated <\/span>the International Days of Tibetan Buddhism and Tradition<\/b> at the Pagode du Bois de Vincennes in Paris, alongside Lama Gendun and Lama Jigme Rinpoche.<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>Grande Pagode<\/span><\/i>, which <\/span>would become the seat of the French Buddhist Union <\/b>through an agreement with the City of Paris, is located in the former pavilions of the 1931 Colonial Exhibition. Faced with the massive arrival of refugees from Southeast Asia in the 1970s, the site was created to allow them a space for spiritual practice and to maintain ties to their traditions, culture and religion.<\/span><\/p>\n

These international days were <\/span>dedicated to encounters and exchange<\/b>. <\/span><\/p>\n

\n

The theme is the search for that spark that lies deep within each of us and can lead us to the light. To do this, we wanted to show that East and West are not strangers and that, although cultures differ, the paths converge and the ultimate goal is the same.<\/span><\/p>\n


Introduction to the conference. (Tendrel no. 3, January 1983<\/i>)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

K\u00fcnzig Shamarpa<\/b> gave several lectures<\/b> on the practice of the Tibetan path, karma and reincarnation and the alchemy of the mind. Dr. Jean-Pierre Schnetzler, a specialist in the relationship between psychology, Buddhism and Western tradition, presented the levels of consciousness, and Fran\u00e7ois Chenique, a doctor of religious sciences and specialist in vedanta, spoke on the transcendent unity of religions<\/span>.<\/span><\/i> Several films were also shown, including Arnaud Desjardins’ <\/span>The Kingdom of Bhutan<\/span><\/i> as well as a documentary on the monastery of Rumtek.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

These teachings and lectures were attended by more than five hundred people from all walks of life and aroused immense interest. However, their real impact goes beyond numbers and lies at the level of consciousness and experience; everyone left the weekend with Shamarpa feeling that it had been a powerful moment, when the veil that conceals wisdom and compassion was lifted for a moment. We hope that we can all meet again under the best of circumstances every year.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Vincennes Pagoda remains a place where people can come into contact with the teachings of the Buddha, especially during Buddhist celebrations such as Vesak. In 2025, the French Buddhist Union<\/a>, one of whose founding members was the late Bernard Lebeau, first president of Dhagpo Kagyu Ling, launched the celebration of its 40th anniversary during Vesak 2025 on May 18 at the Pagoda. The Union brings together Buddhist associations and congregations and liaises with all public authorities. It also works to present Buddhism as one of the great spiritual currents of humanity through the diversity of its traditions, and to develop exchanges between Buddhist thought and modernity, just as the first international days in 1982 promoted by K\u00fcnzig Shamarpa did.<\/span><\/p>\n

En juin 1982<\/strong>, sept mois apr\u00e8s le parinirvana du XVI<\/span>e<\/span><\/sup> Karmapa Rangjung Rikp\u00e9 Dorj\u00e9, le XIVe<\/sup><\/span> Shamarpa, Mipham Ch\u00f6kyi Lodr\u00f6, assumant d\u00e9sormais seul la responsabilit\u00e9 de la lign\u00e9e karma kagy\u00fc, initie les \u00ab\u00a0journ\u00e9es internationales du bouddhisme tib\u00e9tain<\/strong> et de la tradition \u00bb \u00e0 la Pagode du Bois de Vincennes \u00e0 Paris, aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s de lama Guendune et de lama Jigm\u00e9 Rinpoch\u00e9.<\/span><\/p>

La Grande Pagode, qui deviendra le si\u00e8ge de l\u2019Union Bouddhiste de France<\/strong> par une convention contract\u00e9e avec la Ville de Paris, est situ\u00e9e dans d\u2019anciens pavillons de l\u2019Exposition Coloniale de 1931. Face \u00e0 l\u2019arriv\u00e9e massive des r\u00e9fugi\u00e9s d\u2019Asie du Sud-Est dans les ann\u00e9es soixante-dix, le lieu est cr\u00e9\u00e9 pour leur permettre de se retrouver spirituellement et ne pas rompre leurs attaches avec leurs traditions, leur culture et leur religion.<\/span><\/p>

Ces journ\u00e9es internationales sont justement plac\u00e9es sous le sceau de la rencontre et de l\u2019\u00e9change.<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>

Le th\u00e8me est la qu\u00eate de cette \u00e9tincelle qui est au fond de chacun de nous et qui peut nous mener \u00e0 la lumi\u00e8re. Pour ce faire, nous avons voulu montrer qu\u2019Orient et Occident ne sont pas \u00e9trangers et que, si les cultures diff\u00e8rent, les voies convergent et le but ultime est identique\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>

K\u00fcnzig Shamarpa<\/strong> donne plusieurs conf\u00e9rences<\/strong> : sur la pratique de la voie tib\u00e9taine, sur le karma et la r\u00e9incarnation et sur l\u2019alchimie de l\u2019esprit. Le docteur Jean-Pierre Schnetzler, sp\u00e9cialiste du rapport entre psychologie, bouddhisme et tradition occidentale, pr\u00e9sente les niveaux de conscience, et Fran\u00e7ois Chenique, docteur \u00e8s sciences religieuses et sp\u00e9cialiste du vedanta, \u00e9voque l\u2019unit\u00e9 transcendante des religions<\/span>. <\/span><\/i>Plusieurs films sont \u00e9galement pr\u00e9sent\u00e9s, notamment ceux d\u2019Arnaud Desjardins sur le Royaume du Bhoutan ainsi que sur le monast\u00e8re de Rumtek.<\/span><\/p>

Ces enseignements et conf\u00e9rences ont \u00e9t\u00e9 suivis par plus de cinq cents personnes de tous horizons et ont soulev\u00e9 un immense int\u00e9r\u00eat. Cependant leur impact r\u00e9el est au-del\u00e0 des chiffres et se situe au niveau des consciences et du v\u00e9cu : chacun a gard\u00e9 de ce weekend au contact de Shamarpa le sentiment d\u2019un moment puissant, o\u00f9 s\u2019est lev\u00e9 un instant le voile qui masque la sagesse et la compassion. Nous esp\u00e9rons pouvoir tous nous retrouver sous les meilleurs auspices, chaque ann\u00e9e.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>

La Pagode de Vincennes demeure un lieu permettant de rentrer en contact avec les enseignements du Bouddha<\/strong>, notamment lors des c\u00e9l\u00e9brations bouddhiques comme le Vesak.<\/span><\/p>

Lors du Vesak 2025, le 18 mai \u00e0 la Pagode, l\u2019Union Bouddhiste de France (dont l\u2019un des membres fondateurs est feu Bernard Lebeau, premier pr\u00e9sident de Dhagpo Kagyu Ling) c\u00e9l\u00e8brera ses quarante ans. <\/span>L\u2019UBF <\/span><\/a>regroupe les associations et congr\u00e9gations bouddhistes et assure les liens avec l\u2019ensemble des pouvoirs publics. Elle \u0153uvre aussi \u00e0 pr\u00e9senter le bouddhisme comme l\u2019un des grands courants spirituels de l\u2019humanit\u00e9 \u00e0 travers la diversit\u00e9 de ses traditions, ainsi qu\u2019\u00e0 d\u00e9velopper les \u00e9changes entre la pens\u00e9e bouddhique et la modernit\u00e9, tout comme lors de ces premi\u00e8res journ\u00e9es internationales de 1982 port\u00e9es par K\u00fcnzik Shamarpa.<\/span><\/p>
