His arrival was eagerly awaited by Lama Gendun Rinpoche and Lama Jigme Rinpoche along with the small community of practitioners that had begun to form around them since their arrival in 1975. Tsony, a disciple of Lama Gendun Rinpoche, recalls:[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_testimonial _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; locked=&#8221;off&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><em>Gendun Rinpoche told us to work from sunrise to sunset so that everything would be ready for Karmapa! That&#8217;s what we did! We finished laying the last floorboards the night before he arrived.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_testimonial][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; custom_css_free_form=&#8221;img.inline-zoom {||  transition: transform 0.3s ease;||  display: inline-block;||  vertical-align: middle;||  max-width: 100%;||}||||img.inline-zoom:hover {||  transform: scale(2);||  z-index: 10;||}&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>Karmapa stayed at the Ch\u00e2teau de Chaban, owned by Bernard Benson and his wife, as there were no showers, toilets or decent accommodation in Landrevie at the time. \u201dWe used to wash at the public showers in Montignac!&#8221; adds Tsony.<\/p>\n<p>On July 1, 1977, the courtyard of what was not yet the lamas&#8217; house, but simply a very rudimentary farmhouse, was converted into an open-air temple. A throne was built by Frisou and Max. Zimp\u00f6nla, Karmapa&#8217;s chamberlain, who had come with Lama Jigme Rinpoche to the Dordogne in May 1975, insisted that a large padded seat be made so that Karmapa could sit comfortably on the throne. Tsony recalls,<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Zimp\u00f6nla wanted a large cushion to be made. He went to the attic where we stored the clothes we had been given. He took all the clothes to make the padding for the seat!<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The throne, topped with a brocade canopy, was set up in front of a shimmering fabric hanging. The journey from Tibet to the capital, Nanjing, took three years. Karmapa traveled with an entourage called the Eminent Camp that Adorns the World (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">garchen dzamling gyen<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u0f42\u0f62\u0f0b\u0f46\u0f7a\u0f53\u0f0b\u0f60\u0f5b\u0f58\u0f0b\u0f42\u0fb3\u0f72\u0f44\u0f0b\u0f62\u0f92\u0fb1\u0f53\u0f0d in Tibetan). Thousands of hermit practitioners, authentic renunciates, and Karmapa&#8217;s entire administration travelled with him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The camp therefore moved slowly towards China, stopping many times along the way so that Karmapa could give teachings and empowerments. Once he reached the imperial capital, Karmapa offered the court a series of extraordinary teachings and empowerments over a period of twenty-two days. Emperor Yong Le developed deep trust in Karmapa. During one of the ceremonies led by Karmapa Dezhin Shekpa, he saw a black crown floating above Karmapa&#8217;s head.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deeply inspired by this experience, the emperor asked Karmapa for permission to make an exact replica of what he had seen. Karmapa agreed, and the emperor guided the craftsmen in reproducing the crown. Although it was deep blue in color, it appeared black from a distance and thus became known as the Black Crown which Bestows Liberation on Sight (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00fcsha tong drol<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u0f51\u0f56\u0f74\u0f0b\u0f5e\u0fad\u0f0b\u0f58\u0f50\u0f7c\u0f44\u0f0b\u0f42\u0fb2\u0f7c\u0f63\u0f0d in Tibetan).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; custom_css_free_form=&#8221;img.inline-zoom {||  transition: transform 0.3s ease;||  display: inline-block;||  vertical-align: middle;||  max-width: 100%;||}||||img.inline-zoom:hover {||  transform: scale(2);||  z-index: 10;||}&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The crown is an inherent aspect of the physical manifestation of all Karmapas. Long before his birth as D\u00fcsum Khyenpa, in a previous life, the 1st Karmapa (1110-1193) had attained the tenth <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bhumi <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of the bodhisattvas. Whenever a bodhisattva reaches such a degree of realization, the buddhas of the ten directions gather to confer upon the new bodhisattva of the tenth land a special empowerment: the vajra-like samadhi empowerment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the case of the being who was to become the Karmapa, from the moment of this empowerment, this Crown from the hair of a hundred thousand dakinis became a naturally present characteristic of his being. Called the Naturally Manifesting Wisdom Crown (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yeshe rangnang gi ch\u00f6p<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">en \u0f61\u0f7a\u0f0b\u0f64\u0f7a\u0f66\u0f0b\u0f62\u0f44\u0f0b\u0f66\u0fa3\u0f44\u0f0b\u0f42\u0f72\u0f0b\u0f45\u0f7c\u0f51\u0f0b\u0f54\u0f53\u0f0d in Tibetan), it can only be seen by those who possess pure vision that allows them to perceive Buddhas in their enlightened form, or <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sambhogakaya <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in Sanskrit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although imperceptible to most ordinary beings, a disciple with a pure mind imbued with unshakeable confidence can see this crown manifesting naturally. Thus, the 13th Dala\u00ef- Lama, Thupten Gyatso (1876-1933), also perceived, during his meeting with the 16th Karmapa, that the latter wore a second crown in addition to the one that was visible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-321663 size-full alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/dhagpo.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2000\/06\/Coiffe-noire.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dhagpo.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2000\/06\/Coiffe-noire.jpg 600w, https:\/\/dhagpo.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2000\/06\/Coiffe-noire-480x480.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 600px, 100vw\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe Black Crown which Bestows Liberation on Sight\u201d is not only an important physical representation of the qualities of the Karmapas; it is also a means by which these qualities can inspire and accomplish the good of beings. To this end, the Karmapas of the past developed a ceremony that became known as the Vajra Crown Ceremony, or Black Crown Ceremony. Although the witnesses to this ceremony are ordinary beings, the experience of seeing the Karmapa wearing the physical crown anticipates a future time when their purified minds will be able to perceive the qualities of enlightened beings fully, without the need for an external support. History does not specify when the very first Black Crown Ceremony was conducted, but it is clear that this practice was widespread at the time of the ninth Karmapa, Wangchuk Dorje (1556\u20131603).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On July 1, 1977, the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa stepped forward to the throne and took his seat. Tsony remembers clearly, \u201cI had been told that he was a great lama, but he wasn&#8217;t very tall! A bit like Shamar Rinpoche. But he had a really impressive bearing! He was like an elephant!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ceremony began with a request addressed to Karmapa as an emanation of Chenrezig. This was followed by a mandala offering and a traditional seven-branch practice, as had been performed in all the Black Crown ceremonies before this one. Karmapa entered deep meditation. Without leaving his samadhi, he performed the same gesture as the Karmapas of the past and put on the Black Crown. Inseparable from Chenrezig (Avalokiteshvara), he then recited the latter\u2019s six-syllable mantra, Om Mani Padme Hung, praying with his crystal rosary beads.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; custom_css_free_form=&#8221;img.inline-zoom {||  transition: transform 0.3s ease;||  display: inline-block;||  vertical-align: middle;||  max-width: 100%;||}||||img.inline-zoom:hover {||  transform: scale(2);||  z-index: 10;||}&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-321667  alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/dhagpo.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2000\/06\/Topga-Rinpoche.jpg\" alt=\"Tongpa Rinpoch\u00e9\" width=\"302\" height=\"170\"><strong>Topga Yugyal Rinpoche<\/strong> (1942-1997), <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">appointed <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dorje lop\u00f6n<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the lineage and then secretary-general by the 16th Karmapa, explains that the assembly does not passively attend the ceremony but must take an active part in order to reap its benefits: <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you see this Black Crown, visualize in a one-pointed way, with confidence and devotion that rays of light emanate from Karmapa&#8217;s body, speech, and mind and penetrate you. In this way, the harmful inclinations caused by the double veil of afflictive obscurations and the knowable, at the level of your body, speech, and mind, will be purified. This will enable your body, speech, and mind to become inseparable from those of Karmapa. [&#8230;] Think that seeing this Black Crown which Bestows Liberation on Sight, enables you and all beings to actualize the state of Buddhahood.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the <\/span><strong><i>Lankavatara Sutra<\/i><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Buddha said:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those having a Black Crown with their monastic dress, <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Will accomplish without ceasing the benefit of beings<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Until the time when the teachings of the thousand buddhas touch upon their end.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <strong>Guru Padmasambhava:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An emanation of the speech of Avalokitesvara, <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Removed himself from the Tushita heaven for the sake of beings. <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first incarnation, known as D\u00fcsum Khyenpa of secret action, <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Holds the Black Crown as a mark of initiation and as the ornament of his family. <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every moment of his life, he guides a limitless number of beings to enlightenment<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those people who see, hear of, recollect or touch these Karmapas <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Upon leaving this life, will be reborn before Arya Avalokitesvara.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;nextgen &#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; background_color=&#8221;#d4b16a&#8221; custom_margin=&#8221;||||false|false&#8221; custom_padding=&#8221;||||false|false&#8221; locked=&#8221;off&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221;]<\/p>\nngg_shortcode_0_placeholder\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text disabled_on=&#8221;off|off|on&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; text_font=&#8221;Roboto||||||||&#8221; text_font_size=&#8221;13px&#8221; text_line_height=&#8221;1em&#8221; custom_padding=&#8221;||0px|||&#8221; locked=&#8221;off&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">These photos come from our archives or were collected as part of the research for Dhagpo Kagyu Ling\u2019s 50th anniversary. Un tr\u00f4ne est construit par Frisou et Max. Zimp\u00f6nla, le chambellan de Karmapa qui \u00e9tait arriv\u00e9 avec lama Jigm\u00e9 Rinpoch\u00e9 en Dordogne en mai 1975, tient \u00e0 ce qu\u2019une large assise rembourr\u00e9e soit confectionn\u00e9e pour que Karmapa puisse s\u2019asseoir confortablement sur le tr\u00f4ne. Le voyage depuis le Tibet jusqu\u2019\u00e0 la capitale Nanjing dure trois ans. Karmapa voyage avec un entourage appel\u00e9 le <em>Campement \u00c9minent qui Orne le Monde (garchen dzamling gyen<\/em> \u0f42\u0f62\u0f0b\u0f46\u0f7a\u0f53\u0f0b\u0f60\u0f5b\u0f58\u0f0b\u0f42\u0fb3\u0f72\u0f44\u0f0b\u0f62\u0f92\u0fb1\u0f53\u0f0d en tib\u00e9tain). Des milliers de pratiquants ermites, de renon\u00e7ants authentiques ainsi que toute l\u2019administration de Karmapa se d\u00e9placent avec lui. Le campement \u00e9volue donc lentement vers la Chine, s\u2019arr\u00eatant \u00e0 de nombreuses reprises pour que Karmapa puisse dispenser enseignements et initiations en chemin. Une fois parvenu \u00e0 la capitale imp\u00e9riale, pendant 22 jours, Karmapa offre \u00e0 la cour une s\u00e9rie d\u2019enseignements et d\u2019initiations extraordinaires. L\u2019empereur Yong Le d\u00e9veloppe alors une profonde confiance en Karmapa. Lors de l\u2019une des c\u00e9r\u00e9monies dirig\u00e9e par le Karmapa Deshin Shekpa, il per\u00e7oit une coiffe noire flottant au-dessus de la t\u00eate de celui-ci.<\/p>\r\n<p>Profond\u00e9ment inspir\u00e9 par cette exp\u00e9rience, l\u2019empereur demande la permission \u00e0 Karmapa de r\u00e9aliser une r\u00e9plique fid\u00e8le de ce qu\u2019il a vu. Le Karmapa y consent et l\u2019empereur guide alors les artisans dans la reproduction de la coiffe. Bien qu\u2019elle soit d\u2019un bleu profond, elle para\u00eet noire \u00e0 distance et devient ainsi connue sous le nom de <em>Coiffe Noire dont la Vue Conf\u00e8re la Lib\u00e9ration (\u00fcsha tong drol<\/em> \u0f51\u0f56\u0f74\u0f0b\u0f5e\u0fad\u0f0b\u0f58\u0f50\u0f7c\u0f44\u0f0b\u0f42\u0fb2\u0f7c\u0f63\u0f0d en tib\u00e9tain). Bien avant sa naissance en tant que D\u00fcsum Khyenpa, dans une vie ant\u00e9rieure, le Ier Karmapa (1110-1193) avait atteint le dixi\u00e8me <em>bhumi<\/em> des bodhisattvas. Chaque fois qu\u2019un bodhisattva atteint un tel degr\u00e9 de r\u00e9alisation, les bouddhas des dix directions se rassemblent pour conf\u00e9rer au nouveau bodhisattva de la dixi\u00e8me terre une initiation sp\u00e9ciale : l\u2019initiation du Samadhi Semblable au <em>Vajra<\/em>. Dans le cas de l\u2019\u00eatre qui allait devenir le Karmapa d\u00e8s le moment de cette initiation, cette coiffe tiss\u00e9e avec les cheveux de cent mille <em>dakinis<\/em> est devenue une caract\u00e9ristique inh\u00e9rente \u00e0 sa personne. Appel\u00e9e la <em>Coiffe de Sagesse se Manifestant Naturellement (yeshe rangnang gi ch\u00f6pen<\/em> \u0f61\u0f7a\u0f0b\u0f64\u0f7a\u0f66\u0f0b\u0f62\u0f44\u0f0b\u0f66\u0fa3\u0f44\u0f0b\u0f42\u0f72\u0f0b\u0f45\u0f7c\u0f51\u0f0b\u0f54\u0f53\u0f0d en tib\u00e9tain), elle ne peut \u00eatre vue que par ceux qui poss\u00e8dent une vision pure permettant de percevoir les bouddhas sous leur forme \u00e9veill\u00e9e, ou <em>sambhogakaya<\/em> en sanskrit. Bien qu\u2019imperceptible pour la plupart des \u00eatres ordinaires, un disciple \u00e0 l\u2019esprit pur empreint d\u2019une confiance in\u00e9branlable peut voir cette coiffe se manifestant naturellement. Ainsi, lors de sa rencontre avec le XVI<sup>e<\/sup> Karmapa, le XIIIe Dala\u00ef-Lama, Thupten Gyatso (1876-1933), per\u00e7oit que ce dernier rev\u00eat aussi une seconde coiffe en plus de sa coiffe mat\u00e9rielle.<\/p>\r\n<p><img class=\"wp-image-321663 size-full alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/dhagpo.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2000\/06\/Coiffe-noire.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\">La <em>Coiffe dont la Vue Conf\u00e8re la Lib\u00e9ration<\/em> ne constitue pas seulement une repr\u00e9sentation physique importante des qualit\u00e9s des Karmapas ; elle est aussi un moyen par lequel ces qualit\u00e9s peuvent inspirer les \u00eatres et accomplir leur bienfait. Dans ce but, les Karmapas du pass\u00e9 ont d\u00e9velopp\u00e9 une c\u00e9r\u00e9monie qui a pris le nom de C\u00e9r\u00e9monie de la Coiffe Vajra, ou C\u00e9r\u00e9monie de la Coiffe Noire. Bien que les t\u00e9moins de cette c\u00e9r\u00e9monie soient des \u00eatres ordinaires, quand ils font l\u2019exp\u00e9rience de voir le Karmapa porter la coiffe mat\u00e9rielle, cela est le signe annonciateur du moment o\u00f9, dans le futur, leur esprit purifi\u00e9 sera capable de percevoir pleinement les qualit\u00e9s des \u00eatres \u00e9veill\u00e9s, sans avoir recours \u00e0 un support ext\u00e9rieur. L\u2019histoire ne pr\u00e9cise pas quand la toute premi\u00e8re c\u00e9r\u00e9monie de la Coiffe Noire fut conduite, mais il est clair que cette pratique \u00e9tait largement r\u00e9pandue \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9poque du IX<sup>e<\/sup> Karmapa, Wangchuk Dorj\u00e9 (1556-1603).<\/p>\r\n<p>En ce 1<sup>er<\/sup> juillet 1977, le XVI<sup>e<\/sup> Gyalwa Karmapa s\u2019avance vers le tr\u00f4ne sur lequel il prend place. Tsony se souvient clairement : \u00ab On m\u2019avait dit que c\u2019\u00e9tait un grand lama, mais il n\u2019\u00e9tait pas de tr\u00e8s grande taille ! Un peu comme Shamar Rinpoch\u00e9. Il avait cependant une allure vraiment impressionnante ! Il \u00e9tait comme un \u00e9l\u00e9phant ! \u00bb<br><br>La c\u00e9r\u00e9monie d\u00e9bute par une requ\u00eate adress\u00e9e \u00e0 Karmapa en tant qu\u2019\u00e9manation de Chenrezik (Avalokiteshvara). Elle est suivie d\u2019une offrande de mandala, puis de la pratique traditionnelle en sept branches, comme lors de toutes les c\u00e9r\u00e9monies de la Coiffe Noire avant celle-ci. Karmapa entre en profonde m\u00e9ditation. Sans se d\u00e9partir du samadhi, il accomplit le m\u00eame geste que les Karmapas du pass\u00e9 et rev\u00eat la Coiffe Noire.
