On July 13, 1978, when the 16th Karmapa Rangjung Rigpe Dorje wrote a letter from his seat Shedrup Ch\u00f6korling in Rumtek, Sikkim, concerning his vision for maintaining Dharma in the West, he had already taken several long trips to the United States and Canada between 1974 and 1976 and throughout Europe from November 1974 to February 1975 and again in 1976 and 1977, sowing the seeds of liberation in the minds of beings from all walks of life.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the early 1960s Westerners looking for meaning\u2014like the poet Allen Ginsberg, the Tibetologist Gene Smith, the French director Arnaud Desjardins and his wife Denise, the French artist Yahne Le Toumelin and the Danish couple Hannah and Ole Nydahl\u2014came to meet His Holiness in Rumtek, his seat in exile.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 1963, he sent Ch\u00f6gyam Trungpa Rinpoche to Great Britain and Kalu Rinpoche to the United States in 1971. Then, he was invited to Europe by Gelongma Palmo by way of Georgina and \u00c9tienne de Swarte and to America by [1] Tenzin Dorje Namgyal Rinpoche (the Canadian George Leslie Lawson), ordained by the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa himself.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 1975, he met Pope Paul VI at the Vatican<\/a>, a key milestone for the recognition of Buddhism in traditionally Christian countries.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Karmapa\u2019s mind is unlimited, and his vision is as well. As Jigme Rinpoche attests in <\/span>Radiant Compassion<\/span><\/i>, <\/span><\/p>\n

\n

The first step Gyalwa Karmapa took in the Western World was like the appearance of the Buddha himself […] From his first trip to North America and Europe, Dharma spread throughout the entire world. We cannot grasp the extent of his influence because it is immeasurable.<\/span>[2] <\/span><\/sup><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

I<\/span>n a letter written in 1977 the day before his departure from France, concluding his European tour, the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa said,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

In the West, there have been many great scientific and technological advances, some of which have brought great benefit. However, these advances cannot bring peace of mind and it is the appreciation of this which has given rise to a spontaneous interest in the precious teachings of the Buddha Dharma on the true nature of mind. The project to establish Dhagpo Kagyu Ling was conceived out of this spontaneous interest.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

In this same letter, His Holiness indicates that in order to reply to the interest in the Buddha Dharma, more infrastructure is necessary. He notably refers to plans for the construction of a <\/span>tsug lag khang<\/span><\/i> (an environment of study and practice), a great teaching hall, a retreat center (<\/span>drub dra<\/span><\/i>) where the six yogas of Naropa and the profound Mahamudra path can be practiced appropriately, a library capable of holding the Buddha\u2019s teachings in their different aspects, and particularly the four major schools of Tibetan Buddhism.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dhagpo Kagyu Ling, he says, will be a place where the profound teachings of Lord Shakyamuni Buddha can be studied, understood and practiced. The immaculate teachings were propounded for the benefit of all sentient beings.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

This is a condensed version of the Karmapa\u2019s wishes to make the Buddha Dharma accessible in the West in all its authenticity, a project that will lead \u2018countless beings to an understanding of the true nature of mind.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

Then, in his letter from 1978, he addresses\u2014in a wider way\u2014the United States, Canada and all of the European countries he visited, where he observed an aspiration for the Dharma and a commitment to it. In this letter, His Holiness recalls the immense efforts carried out by India\u2019s mahasiddhas\u2014the countless difficulties overcome by the Tibetan translators \u201cto receive both the Dharma of the sutras and tantras from the renowned panditas and accomplished ones of the Noble land [of India]\u201d thanks to whom \u201cnumerous places where study, contemplation and meditation were applied have expanded and flourished.\u201d\u00a0 For example, he recalls that in Tibet, Marpa the translator travelled to India on three occasions, encountering many difficulties, in order to receive instructions on the profound and secret tantras, which he practiced until he realized and was able to transmit them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He adds:<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Due to the timely conditions of the great bodhisattvas\u2019 previous aspirations, without forcing anything, the inhabitants of the world in the East and the West devote efforts to meet the lamas with the sole purpose of understanding the meaning of the Dharma despite the difficulties. Without knowing the language, they still attend the pujas, sitting in the back, and they are always filled with confidence, aspiration and joy. If you look, the mindstream of these beings is endowed with the awakened filiation of the Mahayana\u2014this is certain. I believe that it is possible to newly plant, in their countries, the foundation bases for the authentic Dharma due to causes, conditions and auspicious <\/span>tendrels<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

In order to support the ripening of these <\/span>tendrels<\/span><\/i>, Karmapa sent masters such and Nenang Pawo Rinpoche, his representative Jigme Tsewang, Khenpo Rinpoche Ts\u00fcltrim Gyamtso and Lama Gendun Rinpoche in order to develop the authentic Dharma.<\/span><\/p>\n

Karmapa asked his disciples to help spread the authentic Dharma with their body, speech and mind, and he ensured them that he would take care \u201cin this life and the next ones, that it goes in the proper way.\u201d This is how the profound connection between teacher and student is established, with the master\u2019s blessing and the student\u2019s open heart. <\/span><\/p>\n

Le 13 juillet 1978, lorsque le XVIe<\/sup> Karmapa Rangjung Rigp\u00e9 Dorj\u00e9, depuis son si\u00e8ge de Shedrup Ch\u00f6korling \u00e0 Rumtek au Sikkim, \u00e9crit une lettre \u00e0 propos de sa vision pour le maintien du Dharma en Occident, il a d\u00e9j\u00e0 accompli plusieurs voyages extensifs aux \u00c9tats-Unis et au Canada de 1974 \u00e0 1976 ainsi qu\u2019\u00e0 travers l\u2019Europe, de novembre 1974 \u00e0 f\u00e9vrier 1975, puis en 1976 et 1977, semant des graines de lib\u00e9ration dans l\u2019esprit d\u2019\u00eatres venus de tous horizons.<\/p>\r\n

C\u2019est au d\u00e9but des ann\u00e9es 60 que des occidentaux en qu\u00eate de sens, comme le po\u00e8te Allen Ginsberg, le tib\u00e9tologue Gene Smith, le r\u00e9alisateur fran\u00e7ais Arnaud Desjardins et sa femme Denise, l\u2019artiste fran\u00e7aise Yahne Le Toumelin, les Danois Hannah et Ole Nydhal, etc. viennent \u00e0 la rencontre de Sa Saintet\u00e9 \u00e0 Rumtek, son si\u00e8ge en exil.<\/p>\r\n

D\u00e8s 1963, il envoie Ch\u00f6gyam Trungpa Rinpoch\u00e9 en Grande-Bretagne, puis Kalou Rinpoch\u00e9 aux \u00c9tats-Unis en 1971. En 1975, il rencontre au Vatican le pape Paul VI,<\/a> jalon essentiel pour la reconnaissance du bouddhisme en terre de tradition chr\u00e9tienne.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n

L\u2019esprit du Karmapa est illimit\u00e9, sa vision l\u2019est aussi. Comme en t\u00e9moigne Jigm\u00e9 Rinpoch\u00e9 dans l\u2019ouvrage Compassion rayonnante<\/em> :<\/p>\r\n

Le premier pas du Gyalwa Karmapa dans le monde occidental fut comme l\u2019apparition du Bouddha lui-m\u00eame[\u2026]. D\u00e8s son premier voyage en Am\u00e9rique du Nord et en Europe, le Dharma se r\u00e9pandit dans le monde entier. Nous ne pouvons saisir toute l\u2019\u00e9tendue de son influence tant elle est incommensurable. En 1977, dans une lettre \u00e9crite \u00e0 la veille de son d\u00e9part de France pour conclure sa tourn\u00e9e europ\u00e9enne, le XVIe<\/sup> Gyalwa Karmapa dit ceci :<\/p>\r\n

En Occident, il y a eu beaucoup de grands scientifiques et de progre\u0300s technologiques, parmi lesquels certains ont apport\u00e9 un grand bienfait. Cependant, ces progre\u0300s ne peuvent pas apporter la paix de l\u2019esprit et c\u2019est cette appr\u00e9ciation qui a donn\u00e9 naissance a\u0300 un int\u00e9r\u00eat spontan\u00e9 pour les pr\u00e9cieux enseignements du Bouddha-Dharma sur la v\u00e9ritable nature de l\u2019esprit. Le projet d\u2019\u00e9tablir Dhagpo Kagyu Ling a e\u0301te\u0301 con\u00e7u a\u0300 partir de cet int\u00e9r\u00eat spontan\u00e9.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

Dans cette m\u00eame lettre, Sa Saintet\u00e9 indique qu\u2019afin de r\u00e9pondre \u00e0 l\u2019int\u00e9r\u00eat pour le Bouddha-Dharma, davantage d\u2019infrastructures sont requises. Il se r\u00e9f\u00e8re notamment aux plans qui pr\u00e9voient la construction d\u2019un tsug lag khang<\/em> (environnement d\u2019\u00e9tude et de pratique), d\u2019un grand hall de conf\u00e9rence, d\u2019un centre de retraite (drub dra<\/em>) o\u00f9 les six yogas de Naropa et le chemin profond du mahamudra puissent \u00eatre pratiqu\u00e9s de mani\u00e8re appropri\u00e9e, d\u2019une biblioth\u00e8que pouvant accueillir les enseignements du Bouddha dans tous leurs diff\u00e9rents aspects, en particulier ceux des quatre \u00e9coles majeures du bouddhisme tib\u00e9tain.<\/p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_testimonial _builder_version=\"4.27.4\" _module_preset=\"default\" locked=\"off\" global_colors_info=\"{}\" theme_builder_area=\"post_content\"]

Puis dans sa lettre de 1978, il s\u2019adresse de fa\u00e7on plus large aux \u00c9tats-Unis, au Canada et aux pays europ\u00e9ens qu\u2019il a visit\u00e9s et dont il constate une aspiration pour le Dharma et qui y sont d\u00e9j\u00e0 engag\u00e9s. Dans cette lettre, Sa Saintet\u00e9 rappelle l\u2019immensit\u00e9 des efforts accomplis par les mahasiddhas de l\u2019Inde, les innombrables difficult\u00e9s travers\u00e9es par les traducteurs tib\u00e9tains \u00ab pour recevoir le Dharma des soutras et des tantras des pandits renomm\u00e9s et des accomplis du noble pays [de l\u2019Inde] \u00bb gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 quoi \u00ab les nombreux lieux o\u00f9 l\u2019\u00e9tude, la contemplation et la m\u00e9ditation ont \u00e9t\u00e9 appliqu\u00e9es se sont r\u00e9pandus et d\u00e9ploy\u00e9s \u00bb permettant de \u00ab dissiper la souffrance infinie du mal-\u00eatre caus\u00e9 par la force des cinq poisons \u00bb. Au Tibet par exemple, il rappelle que Marpa le traducteur s\u2019est rendu \u00e0 trois reprises en Inde, rencontrant beaucoup de difficult\u00e9s, afin de recevoir les instructions des tantras profonds et secrets qu\u2019il a pratiqu\u00e9s jusqu\u2019\u00e0 leur actualisation et leur transmission.<\/p>\r\n

Gr\u00e2ce aux conditions opportunes que sont les aspirations ant\u00e9rieures des bodhisattvas \u00e9minents, sans rien forcer, les habitants du monde, en Orient et en Occident, font des efforts pour rencontrer les lamas dans le seul but de comprendre le sens du Dharma malgr\u00e9 les difficult\u00e9s. Sans conna\u00eetre la langue, ils assistent aux pujas<\/em>, assis dans le fond, et ils sont toujours pleins de confiance, d\u2019aspiration et de joie. Si vous regardez, le courant d\u2019esprit de ces \u00eatres est dot\u00e9 du potentiel r\u00e9veill\u00e9 du mahayana, c\u2019est certain. Afin de soutenir le m\u00fbrissement de ces tendrels<\/em>, Karmapa envoie des ma\u00eetres tels que Nenang Pawo Rinpoch\u00e9, son repr\u00e9sentant Jigm\u00e9 Tsewang, khenpo<\/em> Rinpoch\u00e9 Ts\u00fcltrim Gyamtso et lama Guendune Rinpoch\u00e9 afin qu\u2019ils d\u00e9veloppent le Dharma authentique.
