The teacher and translator Dominique Thomas, a resident at Dhagpo during that time, was among them. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was great for us to be able to study like that, but it wasn&#8217;t possible for everyone to come to KIBI for five straight months. And, on the other hand, there were philosophy courses and the study of texts at Dhagpo, but only for a few days and then we picked up again the following year. Things were a bit disparate. That\u2019s where the idea to create this summer university came from.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The program of study occurred over the course of five years for one month each summer. The cycle was intense and went through adaptations over the years.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> In the first year, participants studied <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Rice Seedling Sutra<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Sanksrit: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Samadhirajasutra<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and Kamalashila\u2019s commentary. Foreseen in the following years were <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Sixty Stanzas that Demonstrate Emptiness<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Precious Garland of Madhyamika<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Nagarjuna; <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Treasury of Valid Reasoning <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by Sakya Pandita; <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Treaty that Distinguishes the Nature of Phenomena from Phenomena<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Maitreya <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">through the words of Asanga<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Realisation Song of Mahamudra<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Saraha<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; Mahamudra Taught on the Banks of the Ganges<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Tilopa, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Ten Aspects of Suchness<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Maitripa<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and more. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Khenpo Ch\u00f6drak Rinpoche<\/strong>, director of KIBI as well as the Nalanda Institute of Higher Studies at Rumtek Monastery, and <strong>Topga Rinpoche<\/strong>, the lineage&#8217;s great scholars, <strong>taught each morning.<\/strong> The afternoon was devoted to review and further study with the students and translators who had already studied at KIBI. The commentaries of root texts were given in a condensed way while still preserving the essence of their profound meaning. There were also courses on Tibetan language.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The university immediately <strong>took on an international aspect,<\/strong> welcoming practitioners from Germany, Austria, Denmark, Spain, Italy, Switzerland and more. Each student was asked to put on a headset connected to a radio set to a certain frequency so that they could listen in their chosen language. In the first years, the university included fewer French students than foreign ones, as the French community of practitioners was more focused on meditation practice and preparation for retreat than on philosophical study. Most students stayed at the center, some in tents set up in the pine grove behind the dining hall. The teaching was traditional, staying as close and possible to the text. \u201cOver the years, some things changed a little bit to try to help us understand, like the examples that are used. Khenpo tried to adapt to our somewhat limited and materialistic vision during the question and answer sessions,\u201d reflects Dominique.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the beginning, it was fairly chaotic because we were pretty poorly equipped. The course took place in the rotunda. Rinpoche taught, the translation was in English<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and we sat together in little groups around the translators for the simultaneous translation into Spanish, German and French. It echoed. It was a very relaxed, yet studious ambiance. People were extremely motivated.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the time, there was also no library, no French translation of most texts. Little by little, over the years, the <strong>university became more organized<\/strong>, with groups put together to take care of certain tasks. Wooden planks were set up between the translators to reduce noise and improve comfort.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yeunten, still called Marie at the time before adopting her faithful, lay disciplines, arrived at Dhagpo in 1998 at fifty-two-years-old. She left behind a job as a manager in Paris and began summer university in 2000. She continues the program today. She was an adept of Hinduism when she came to Dhagpo, after having spent time with Christian and New Age traditions. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I immediately felt connected when I met Khenpo. He opened my mind in terms of study and understanding the texts. I began studying immediately even though I was terrible at it. I\u2019m self-taught; I don\u2019t have a degree. I didn\u2019t understand anything at all! I took notes on everything without understanding. One day, Khenpo Ch\u00f6drak told us that when you choose a path, ou have to follow it to the end. The same evening, I gave up everything that wasn\u2019t the Buddhist path. It allowed me to see that this path definitely liberates you from suffering, and that\u2019s how I got hooked.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Study makes you do intellectual work but that, in the end, leads us to letting go of a certain number of certainties, says Dominique. It allows us to get distance from the false ideas that we have and, most of all, it gives us confidence in the\u00a0 Buddha\u2019s teaching and the path. Because when we look at the teachings of the great masters and the commentaries, we see that they truly studied everything\u2014not necessarily in an intellectual way, but their realization truly saw confusion in all its details and absence of confusion in all its splendor.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Expressing her limitless gratitude towards the lineage\u2019s masters, Yeunten has no doubt about the future. Last year, she gave Khenpo Ch\u00f6drak a letter to express her gratitude. In a previous short meeting she confided to him that, \u201cI hope I will be reborn at Shar Minub, in Nepal, for example. He looked at me and clapped his hands and said, \u2018very good Yeunten\u2014we\u2019ll be able to debate together!\u2019 I\u2019m a child just beginning to discover a wonder, and I will continue in the next lives until one day I can teach.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dhagpo.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Enseignements-Khenpo-Chodrak-Rinpoche_DKL_EN.pdf\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-323454  alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/dhagpo.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Enseignements-Khenpo-Chodrak-Rinpoche_DKL_EN.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"302\" height=\"427\" \/><\/a>For more than thirty years,<\/strong> Khenpo Ch\u00f6drak Rinpoche<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, now seventy-five-years old,<strong> has come to teach<\/strong> practitioners the treasures of Buddhist knowledge. In 2024, he once again began the study of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Stages of Meditation<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Sanskrit: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bhavanakrama<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) by Kamalashila, which he will continue <a href=\"https:\/\/dhagpo.org\/en\/calendrier\/buddhist-treasures-knowledge-2\/\">this month starting July 8. <\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to summer university, Lama Jigme Rinpoche has taken care to provide the conditions for education at Dhagpo to be offered to its residents along with motivated members of the urban centers affiliated with Dhagpo (KTTs). Cette \u00e9tape, d\u00e9cisive, <strong>ouvre aux Europ\u00e9ens<\/strong> l\u2019acc\u00e8s aux bases de la philosophie bouddhiste, tr\u00e9sors de la connaissance, tels qu\u2019enseign\u00e9s par le Bouddha et les ma\u00eetres hautement r\u00e9alis\u00e9s qui lui ont succ\u00e9d\u00e9.<\/p><p>Le XVI\u1d49 Gyalwa Karmapa avait souhait\u00e9 voir se r\u00e9aliser ce projet afin que les Occidentaux puissent recevoir des enseignements de base du Bouddha, et il avait par ailleurs <strong>indiqu\u00e9 des textes cl\u00e9s \u00e0 enseigner<\/strong>. Ce sont K\u00fcnzik Shamar Rinpoch\u00e9 et lama Jigm\u00e9 Rinpoch\u00e9 qui ont \u0153uvr\u00e9 au m\u00fbrissement de ce souhait.<\/p><p><strong>\u00c0 partir de 1991<\/strong>, afin d\u2019obtenir un dipl\u00f4me d\u2019\u00e9tudes bouddhiques d\u00e9livr\u00e9 par des grands \u00e9rudits de la lign\u00e9e karma kagy\u00fc, des \u00e9tudiants occidentaux se rendent \u00e0 New Delhi, au Karmapa International Buddhist Institute (KIBI) inaugur\u00e9 l\u2019ann\u00e9e pr\u00e9c\u00e9dente par K\u00fcnzik Shamar Rinpoch\u00e9. L\u2019enseignant et traducteur Dominique Thomas, r\u00e9sident \u00e0 Dhagpo Kagyu Ling \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9poque, en faisait partie :<\/p><blockquote><p>C\u2019\u00e9tait super pour nous de pouvoir \u00e9tudier comme \u00e7a mais ce n\u2019\u00e9tait pas possible pour tout le monde de venir pendant cinq mois d\u2019affil\u00e9e au KIBI. Et d\u2019un autre c\u00f4t\u00e9, il y avait des stages de philosophie, des \u00e9tudes de textes \u00e0 Dhagpo, mais c\u2019\u00e9tait sur quelques jours, et on reprenait l\u2019ann\u00e9e suivante. C\u2019\u00e9tait un peu disparate. D\u2019o\u00f9 l\u2019id\u00e9e de cr\u00e9er cette universit\u00e9 d\u2019\u00e9t\u00e9.<\/p><\/blockquote><p>Le cycle d\u2019\u00e9tudes de l\u2019Universit\u00e9 d\u2019\u00e9t\u00e9 est programm\u00e9 sur cinq ans, \u00e0 raison d\u2019un mois chaque \u00e9t\u00e9. Le programme annonc\u00e9 est dense et sera adapt\u00e9 au fil des ann\u00e9es<a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\">[1]<\/a> : en premi\u00e8re ann\u00e9e, l\u2019\u00e9tude du <em>Soutra du grain de riz (<\/em> <em>Samadhirajasutra, en sanskrit<\/em>) et le commentaire de Kamalashila\u00a0; les ann\u00e9es suivantes : <em>Les Soixante Strophes qui d\u00e9montrent la vacuit\u00e9 <\/em>et<em> La Pr\u00e9cieuse Guirlande du madhyamaka<\/em> de Nagarjuna\u00a0; <em>Le Tr\u00e9sor de la Th\u00e9orie de la <\/em><em>Connaissance Exacte<\/em><em>, <\/em>de Sakya Pandita\u00a0; <em>Le trait\u00e9 qui distingue les ph\u00e9nom\u00e8nes de la nature des ph\u00e9nom\u00e8nes<\/em> de Maitreya \u00e0 travers la parole d\u2019Asanga\u00a0; <em>Chant de la r\u00e9alisation du mahamoudra, <\/em>de Saraha\u00a0; <em>Le Mahamoudra enseign\u00e9 sur les berges du Gange,<\/em> de Tilopa\u00a0; <em>Les Dix Aspects de l\u2019ainsit\u00e9, <\/em>de Maitripa, etc<\/p><p><strong><em>Khenpo<\/em> Ch\u00f6drak Rinpoch\u00e9<\/strong>, directeur du KIBI ainsi que de l\u2019Institut Nalanda des hautes \u00e9tudes tib\u00e9taines du monast\u00e8re de Rumtek, et T<strong>opga Rinpoch\u00e9<\/strong>, tous deux grands \u00e9rudits de la lign\u00e9e,<strong> enseignent chaque matin<\/strong>. L\u2019apr\u00e8s-midi est consacr\u00e9 aux r\u00e9p\u00e9titions et \u00e0 l\u2019approfondissement avec des \u00e9tudiants et traducteurs ayant d\u00e9j\u00e0 \u00e9tudi\u00e9 au KIBI. Les commentaires des textes racines sont donn\u00e9s d\u2019une fa\u00e7on condens\u00e9e tout en pr\u00e9servant l\u2019essentiel de leur signification profonde. Des cours de tib\u00e9tain sont \u00e9galement dispens\u00e9s.<\/p><p>L\u2019universit\u00e9 d\u2019\u00e9t\u00e9 prend imm\u00e9diatement une<strong> dimension internationale,<\/strong> accueillant des pratiquants d\u2019Allemagne, d\u2019Autriche, du Danemark, d\u2019Espagne, d\u2019Italie, de Suisse etc. Il est demand\u00e9 \u00e0 chaque \u00e9tudiant de se munir d\u2019une radio avec modulation de fr\u00e9quence ainsi que d\u2019un casque pour \u00e9couter la traduction dans la langue choisie.<\/p><p>Les premi\u00e8res ann\u00e9es, l\u2019universit\u00e9 comptent moins de Fran\u00e7ais, qui se consacrent davantage aux pratiques m\u00e9ditatives et \u00e0 la pr\u00e9paration aux retraites qu\u2019\u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9tude philosophique. La plupart des \u00e9tudiants logent sur place, y compris sous leurs tentes dress\u00e9es dans la pin\u00e8de derri\u00e8re le r\u00e9fectoire. L\u2019enseignement est traditionnel, au plus pr\u00e8s des textes.<\/p><blockquote><p>Au fil des ans, il y a des choses qui ont un petit peu chang\u00e9 pour essayer de nous faire comprendre, comme dans les exemples qui \u00e9taient pris. C\u2019est au moment des questions-r\u00e9ponses que <em>Khenpo<\/em> essayait de s\u2019adapter \u00e0 notre vision quand m\u00eame assez limit\u00e9e et mat\u00e9rialiste, t\u00e9moigne Dominique. Au tout d\u00e9but, c\u2019\u00e9tait assez chaotique parce qu\u2019on \u00e9tait quand m\u00eame tr\u00e8s mal \u00e9quip\u00e9s. Cela se passait dans la rotonde. Rinpoch\u00e9 enseignait, la traduction \u00e9tait faite depuis le tib\u00e9tain vers l\u2019anglais[2] et on \u00e9tait dans la m\u00eame pi\u00e8ce par petits groupes autour des traducteurs pour la traduction simultan\u00e9e en espagnol, allemand et fran\u00e7ais, il y avait des \u00e9chos. C\u2019\u00e9tait tr\u00e8s d\u00e9tendu comme ambiance mais super studieux. Il y avait une sacr\u00e9e motivation.<\/p><\/blockquote><p>\u00c0 l\u2019\u00e9poque il n\u2019y avait pas non plus de biblioth\u00e8que et la plupart des textes \u00e9tudi\u00e9s n\u2019\u00e9taient pas traduits en fran\u00e7ais. Petit \u00e0 petit, au fil des ann\u00e9es, <strong>l\u2019universit\u00e9 s\u2019organise,<\/strong> avec des groupes constitu\u00e9s pour se r\u00e9partir diff\u00e9rentes t\u00e2ches. Des planches de bois sont dispos\u00e9es entre les traducteurs afin de r\u00e9duire le bruit et ainsi gagner en confort.<\/p><p>Yeunten, qui s\u2019appelait alors Marie et n\u2019avait pas encore pris les disciplines de fid\u00e8le s\u00e9culi\u00e8re, arrive \u00e0 Dhagpo fin 1998, \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e2ge de 52 ans, apr\u00e8s avoir quitt\u00e9 un poste \u00e0 responsabilit\u00e9s \u00e0 Paris. Elle commence l\u2019Universit\u00e9 d\u2019\u00e9t\u00e9 en 2000, qu\u2019elle poursuit avec assiduit\u00e9 jusqu\u2019\u00e0 ce jour. Lorsqu\u2019elle arrive \u00e0 Dhagpo, elle est adepte de l\u2019hindouisme, apr\u00e8s avoir baign\u00e9 dans la chr\u00e9tient\u00e9 puis le New Age :<\/p><blockquote><p>La rencontre avec <em>Khenpo<\/em> \u00e9tait un coup de c\u0153ur. Il m\u2019a ouvert l\u2019esprit, au niveau de l\u2019\u00e9tude et de la compr\u00e9hension des textes. Je me suis mise toute suite \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9tude alors que j\u2019\u00e9tais nulle l\u00e0-dedans. Je suis autodidacte, je n\u2019ai pas de dipl\u00f4mes. Je ne comprenais strictement rien ! Je prenais des notes \u00e0 tout va, sans les comprendre. Un jour, <em>khenpo<\/em> Ch\u00f6drak nous a dit : \u201c quand vous choisissez une voie, il faut aller jusqu\u2019au bout\u201d. Le soir m\u00eame, j\u2019avais arr\u00eat\u00e9 tout ce qui n\u2019\u00e9tait pas le chemin bouddhiste. \u00c7a m\u2019a permis de voir que cette voie-l\u00e0, elle te lib\u00e8re d\u00e9finitivement de la souffrance, et c\u2019est comme \u00e7a que j\u2019ai accroch\u00e9.<\/p><\/blockquote><blockquote><p>L\u2019\u00e9tude vous fait faire un travail intellectuel mais qui, finalement, va nous amener \u00e0 l\u00e2cher un certain nombre de certitudes, explique Dominique. \u00c7a nous permet d\u2019\u00e9carter toutes les id\u00e9es fausses que l\u2019on a, et puis surtout, \u00e7a donne confiance dans l\u2019enseignement du Bouddha et dans le chemin. Parce que quand on regarde les enseignements des grands ma\u00eetres et les commentaires, on voit qu\u2019ils ont v\u00e9ritablement tout \u00e9tudi\u00e9, pas forc\u00e9ment de mani\u00e8re intellectuelle, mais que leur r\u00e9alisation voit vraiment la confusion dans tous ses d\u00e9tails et l\u2019absence de confusion dans toute sa splendeur.<\/p><\/blockquote><p>Exprimant sa gratitude illimit\u00e9e envers les ma\u00eetres de la lign\u00e9e, Yeunten n\u2019a aucun doute sur l\u2019avenir.
