The Buddha of Kundreul Ling\u2019s Main Temple: From Creation to Consecration"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[et_pb_section fb_built=&#8221;1&#8243; specialty=&#8221;on&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.3&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;3_4&#8243; specialty_columns=&#8221;3&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; custom_padding=&#8221;|||&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; custom_padding__hover=&#8221;|||&#8221;][et_pb_row_inner _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.3&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_column_inner saved_specialty_column_type=&#8221;3_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.3&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; custom_css_free_form=&#8221;img.inline-zoom {|| transition: transform 0.3s ease;|| display: inline-block;|| vertical-align: middle;|| max-width: 100%;||}||||img.inline-zoom:hover {|| transform: scale(2);|| z-index: 10;||}&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On<strong> July 21<\/strong>, 2001, K\u00fcnzig Shamarpa Mipham Ch\u00f6kyi Lodr\u00f6 consecrated the majestic<strong> statue of Shakyamuni Buddha<\/strong> in the Main Temple of Dhagpo Kundreul Ling, making it a powerful source of blessing for all who enter this unique site.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-322145\" src=\"https:\/\/dhagpo.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/09_BTP.BDH_.342.jpg\" alt=\"Shamar Rinpoch\u00e9 rabn\u00e9\" width=\"393\" height=\"261\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His arrival to perform the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rabne<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a consecration ceremony to ensure that \u201cthe deity remains perfectly,\u201d marked the <strong>culmination of a traditional process<\/strong> that lasted several years. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lama Kunkyab, who was in charge of decorating the temple at the time, explains that Lama Sherab Gyaltsen Rinpoche had consecrated the throne in a ritual using 108 vases for the nagas, 108 for the devas, and 108 for the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">norlas<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The lotus at the base is filled with rice, wheat and plant substances. The <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">soching<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the tree of life in the vertical axis inside the statue, has a dorje at one end and a stupa at the other, both carved from wood; it is calligraphied with gold powder and prayers are embossed with natural pigments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Sherab Gyaltsen Rinpoche donated <strong>precious substances,<\/strong> and precious stones were also received from donors. Rituals consecrated all these substances, as well as mantras rolled into large scrolls that were prepared months in advance and placed in various locations inside the statue, along with relics that had belonged to eminent lamas. During his visit to Kundreul Ling, the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa also participated in these consecration rituals. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_testimonial _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; locked=&#8221;off&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the statues to be authentic vehicles of blessing, they must be consecrated in the correct manner. From an external point of view, the statue is the image of the Buddha, but if it remains an empty vessel, it conveys less blessing<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The Buddha&#8217;s mantras are one source of this blessing, and the soching, or tree of life, placed in the center of the statue is another. This is like a \u2018<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tendrel<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u2019 or \u2018auspicious link,\u2019 created by the quality of the external craftsmanship and the authenticity of the filling and consecration rituals themselves. This tendrel, created by this positive activity, is the vehicle for immense blessings. This is why the statue, filled with a large number of mantras, becomes the receptacle for the Buddha&#8217;s body, speech and mind, and thus for his blessings. In ancient times, statues crafted by accomplished masters were consecrated by the power of their samadhi. It was therefore not necessary to perform rituals. But times have changed, and today we must use mantras.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: right;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">K\u00fcnzig Shamarpa in an interview with the magazine <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Karm\u00e9 Guendune<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (N<sup>o<\/sup>. 13, September 2001)<\/span><\/h5>\n<p>[\/et_pb_testimonial][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; custom_css_free_form=&#8221;img.inline-zoom {|| transition: transform 0.3s ease;|| display: inline-block;|| vertical-align: middle;|| max-width: 100%;||}||||img.inline-zoom:hover {|| transform: scale(2);|| z-index: 10;||}&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Standing five meters high and weighing nearly a ton, the statue was designed and created by French artist G\u00e9rard Guinot in his studio in Burgundy. Inspired by ancient Egypt and the art of cathedrals, he discovered Buddhism at the Dashang Kagyu Ling temple in Burgundy, where he met Jamg\u00f6n Kongtrul Rinpoche and Kalu Rinpoche, among others. He trained with Bhutanese sculptors. At the request of Jamg\u00f6n Kongtrul Rinpoche, he created works for places associated with the lineage in the outskirts of New York, USA and in Rumtek, Sikkim, before creating the statue for Kundreul Ling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the request of Lama Gendun Rinpoche, he made a one-meter model for the Buddha of Kundreul Ling\u2019s Main Temple.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He made comments and gave me advice, but not formal advice. It was more like elliptical advice, such as that the Buddha is seated on a stable discipline for the base. So I had to translate that into concrete terms.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is the state of mind in which a statue is created?<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You mustn&#8217;t imagine that you are in a state of meditation. No! It is deep motivation that makes it happen. And then you need patience, precision, and a keen sense that the statue is truly inspiring. When you craft a statue, there is obviously the external and technical side, but creativity is more about making it inspiring. A meditating being must, of course, emanate relaxation. For example, if the shoulders are a little tense, you can see it in the statue; good posture can be felt in the position of the feet and the hands.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The statue, <strong>made of gold-covered<\/strong> copper sheets, was created over the course of a year, in collaboration with G\u00e9rard\u2019s brother, a Compagnon du Devoir (1)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> specializing in metalwork, in the Jura region. Due to its size, the assembly\u2014a critical moment in the process\u2014was done on site, with some difficulties encountered in getting the convoy into the temple. The large number of parts to be assembled required a lot of welding.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Technically, making the parts is not a problem. But putting them together to form a whole and make it inspiring is the hardest part. You have to adjust the pieces until they fit, explains G\u00e9rard.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-322149  alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/dhagpo.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/29_BTP.BDH_.368.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"441\" \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>The gilding, done on site<\/strong> by C\u00e9line, a resident at the time who is now a professional gilder, was applied to a red lacquer to make it last longer. The face was painted just before the consecration by the painter Denzong Norbou.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the morning of the consecration, an orange light shone on the Puy-de-D\u00f4me mountain range, a sign for Shamarpa that \u201cManjushri is visiting us,\u201d recalls Kunkyab. Shamarpa received a large pearl from an Asian disciple, which he wanted to place between the Buddha&#8217;s eyes, in the location of the third eye. Kunkyab recalls,<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To place this pearl, G\u00e9rard had to tap a little in that spot with his small hammer. We had rented a bucket truck, and Shamar Rinpoche wanted to go up himself to place the pearl with G\u00e9rard. So they went behind the curtain that was still hiding the statue to place the pearl.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then K\u00fcnzik Shamarpa led the rabne ceremony, in the <strong>presence of about a hundred monastics and the surrounding community.<\/strong> It began with ablutions and offerings. Then, holding a mirror reflecting the Buddha, Shamarpa stood in front of the statue and traced syllables on it with consecrated water. He then removed the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">katha<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> placed before the statue\u2019s eyes, and it was at that moment that the Buddha truly came to life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thus, Kundreul Ling\u2019s Main Temple, one of the wishes of the 16th Karmapa Rangjung Rigpe Dorje to allow access to the authentic teachings of the Buddha in the West, is also a reflection of a dialogue between Asia and Europe, between Tibetan masters and European practitioners, creating many \u201ctendrels\u201d with the wisdom of the Buddha. Consecrated by K\u00fcnzig Shamarpa, it is a reflection of the lineage&#8217;s ever-deepening footprint. For G\u00e9rard, this path allows him to unite his work with his spiritual quest:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s wonderful. One cannot help but notice that there is a connection between the mind that shapes matter and matter itself. There is no split. And that remains a mystery to me.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h5>(1) French association and movement enabling youth to learn a manual craft. Le XVII<sup>e<\/sup> Gyalwa Karmapa, lors de sa visite \u00e0 Kundreul Ling, avait \u00e9galement particip\u00e9 \u00e0 ces rituels de cons\u00e9cration.<\/p><p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_testimonial _builder_version=\"4.27.4\" _module_preset=\"default\" locked=\"off\" global_colors_info=\"{}\" theme_builder_area=\"post_content\"]<\/p><p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pour que les statues soient d\u2019authentiques supports de b\u00e9n\u00e9diction, elles doivent \u00eatre consacr\u00e9es de mani\u00e8re correcte. D\u2019un point de vue ext\u00e9rieur, la statue est \u00e0 l\u2019effigie du Bouddha, mais si elle reste un r\u00e9ceptacle vide, elle v\u00e9hicule moins de b\u00e9n\u00e9diction. Les mantras du Bouddha sont une source pour cette b\u00e9n\u00e9diction, le <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">soching<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, arbre de vie plac\u00e9 au centre de la statue, en est une autre. Ceci est comme un \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tendrel\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, un \u201clien de bon augure\u201d cr\u00e9\u00e9 par la qualit\u00e9 du fa\u00e7onnage ext\u00e9rieur et l\u2019authenticit\u00e9 des rituels de remplissage et de la cons\u00e9cration en elle-m\u00eame. Ce <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tendrel<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, cr\u00e9\u00e9 par cette activit\u00e9 positive, est le v\u00e9hicule d\u2019une immense b\u00e9n\u00e9diction. Voil\u00e0 pourquoi la statue, remplie d\u2019un grand nombre de mantras, devient le r\u00e9ceptacle du corps, de la parole et de l\u2019esprit du Bouddha et donc de sa b\u00e9n\u00e9diction. Dans les temps anciens, les statues fa\u00e7onn\u00e9es par les ma\u00eetres accomplis \u00e9taient consacr\u00e9es par le pouvoir de leur samadhi. Il n\u2019\u00e9tait donc pas n\u00e9cessaire d\u2019effectuer des rituels. Inspir\u00e9 par l\u2019\u00c9gypte ancienne et l\u2019art des cath\u00e9drales, il d\u00e9couvre le bouddhisme au temple de Dashang Kagyu Ling en Bourgogne, o\u00f9 il rencontre notamment Jamg\u00f6n Kongtr\u00fcl Rinpoch\u00e9 et Kalou Rinpoch\u00e9. Il se forme aupr\u00e8s de sculpteurs bhoutanais. \u00c0 la demande de Jamg\u00f6n Kongtr\u00fcl Rinpoch\u00e9, il r\u00e9alise, avant la statue de Kundreul Ling, diff\u00e9rentes \u0153uvres destin\u00e9es aux lieux de la lign\u00e9e aux alentours de New York (\u00c9tats Unis) ainsi qu\u2019\u00e0 Rumtek, au Sikkim.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">C\u2019est \u00e0 la demande de lama Guendune Rinpoch\u00e9 qu\u2019il r\u00e9alise une maquette d\u2019un m\u00e8tre pour le bouddha du grand temple de Kundreul Ling. <\/span><\/p><blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Il m\u2019a fait des remarques et donn\u00e9 des conseils, mais pas des conseils formels. C\u2019\u00e9tait plut\u00f4t des conseils assez elliptiques, comme \u201cle Bouddha est assis sur une discipline stable\u201d pour la base. Et donc il fallait que je traduise \u00e7a en termes concrets.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dans quel \u00e9tat d\u2019esprit se r\u00e9alise une statue ? <\/span><\/p><blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Il ne faut pas s\u2019imaginer qu\u2019on est en \u00e9tat de m\u00e9ditation. Non ! C\u2019est la motivation profonde qui fait qu\u2019apr\u00e8s, \u00e7a suit son cours. Et puis il faut de la patience, de la pr\u00e9cision et bien sentir justement que la statue soit vraiment inspirante. Quand on fait une statue, il y a \u00e9videmment le c\u00f4t\u00e9 ext\u00e9rieur et technique, mais la cr\u00e9ativit\u00e9 est plut\u00f4t dans le sens de la rendre inspirante. Un \u00eatre qui m\u00e9dite, forc\u00e9ment, il faut que \u00e7a \u00e9mane de la d\u00e9tente. Par exemple, si les \u00e9paules sont un peu tendues, on peut le voir dans la statue, la bonne assise se ressent dans la position des pieds, les mains aussi.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La statue, en <strong>feuilles de cuivre<\/strong> recouvertes d\u2019or, est r\u00e9alis\u00e9e en l\u2019espace d\u2019une ann\u00e9e, en collaboration avec son fr\u00e8re, un compagnon du Devoir sp\u00e9cialis\u00e9 en chaudronnerie dans le Jura. En raison de sa taille, l\u2019assemblage, un moment critique dans la r\u00e9alisation, se fait sur place, ce qui a occasionn\u00e9 quelques difficult\u00e9s pour entrer le convoi dans le temple. Le grand nombre de parties \u00e0 assembler n\u00e9cessite de nombreuses soudures. <\/span><\/p><blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Faire des parties, techniquement, ne pose pas de probl\u00e8mes insolubles. Mais l\u2019assemblage qui fait que \u00e7a forme un tout et que ce soit inspirant est le plus difficile. Il faut ajuster les morceaux jusqu\u2019\u00e0 ce que \u00e7a aille , explique G\u00e9rard.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img class=\"wp-image-322149  alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/dhagpo.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/29_BTP.BDH_.368.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"441\">La <strong>dorure, r\u00e9alis\u00e9e sur place<\/strong> par C\u00e9line, r\u00e9sidente \u00e0 Kundrel Ling \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9poque et aujourd\u2019hui doreuse professionnelle, est appliqu\u00e9e sur une laque de couleur rouge afin de mieux tenir ; la peinture du visage est r\u00e9alis\u00e9e, juste avant la cons\u00e9cration, par le peintre Denzong Norbou.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Le matin m\u00eame de la cons\u00e9cration, une lumi\u00e8re orange brille sur la cha\u00eene du Puy-de-D\u00f4me, signe pour Shamarpa que \u00ab Manjushri nous rend visite \u00bb se souvient Kunkyab. Shamarpa avait re\u00e7u une grosse perle d\u2019une disciple asiatique qu\u2019il souhaitait ins\u00e9rer entre les deux yeux du Bouddha, \u00e0 l\u2019emplacement du troisi\u00e8me \u0153il. Kunkyab se souvient :\u00a0<\/span><\/p><blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Pour mettre cette perle, G\u00e9rard a d\u00fb aller taper un peu \u00e0 cet endroit-l\u00e0 avec son petit marteau. On avait lou\u00e9 une nacelle et Shamar Rinpoch\u00e9 a voulu aller lui-m\u00eame poser la perle avec G\u00e9rard. Alors ils sont all\u00e9s derri\u00e8re le rideau qui cachait encore la statue pour poser la perle.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">K\u00fcnzik Shamarpa m\u00e8ne la c\u00e9r\u00e9monie du <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rabn\u00e9<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, en pr\u00e9sence d\u2019une <strong>centaine de monastiques et de la communaut\u00e9 la\u00efque<\/strong> environnante. Cela commence par des ablutions et des offrandes. Puis Shamarpa se place devant la statue et, tenant un miroir qui refl\u00e8te le Bouddha, il y trace des syllabes avec de l\u2019eau consacr\u00e9e. Ensuite, il retire la <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kata<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> masquant les yeux de la statue et c\u2019est \u00e0 ce moment-l\u00e0 que le Bouddha devient r\u00e9ellement vivant.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ainsi, le grand temple du Bost, r\u00e9sultant d\u2019un des souhaits du XVI<\/span><sup><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">e<\/span><\/sup><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Karmapa Rangjung Rigp\u00e9 Dorj\u00e9 pour permettre l\u2019acc\u00e8s aux enseignements authentiques du Bouddha en Occident, est aussi le reflet d\u2019un dialogue entre l\u2019Asie et l\u2019Europe, entre des ma\u00eetres tib\u00e9tains et des pratiquants europ\u00e9ens, cr\u00e9ant autant de \u00ab<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tendrels <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00bb avec la sagesse du Bouddha. Consacr\u00e9e par K\u00fcnzik Shamarpa, la statue est un<strong> reflet de l\u2019empreinte de la lign\u00e9e<\/strong> qui s\u2019ancre toujours plus profond\u00e9ment. Pour G\u00e9rard, ce chemin lui permet d\u2019unir son activit\u00e9 \u00e0 sa qu\u00eate spirituelle. <\/span><\/p><blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">C\u2019est merveilleux. On est oblig\u00e9 de constater qu\u2019il y a un lien entre l\u2019esprit qui fa\u00e7onne la mati\u00e8re et la mati\u00e8re. Il n\u2019y a pas de rupture.
