This must be the focus for all of us, including for myself. During this time and beyond, we must guard against thoughts, words and actions that are led by emotion, cause any harm, or lead to any unnecessary karma. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Therefore, this is a time for wisdom, a time for responsibility. Right now, our focus must be on practice. On mourning the loss in this life of our great teacher. To learn from his wisdom and compassion, to cool our emotions, and move on together in peace.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: right;\">T<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he 17th Gyalwa Karmapa Thaye Dorje in an address to his disciples.<\/span><\/h5>\n<p>[\/et_pb_testimonial][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This traditional forty-nine days of grieving and practice began upon the<a href=\"https:\/\/dhagpo.org\/en\/june-11-2014-kunzig-shamar-rinpoche-parinirvana\/\"> parinirvana of Mipham Ch\u00f6kyi Lodr\u00f6, the 14th Shamar Rinpoche<\/a>, in Renchen-Ulm, Germany, on June 11. This marked<strong> the start of a voyage<\/strong> overflowing with fervor, gratitude and respect towards this master, teacher and lineage holder who identified, recognized and educated the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa and taught tirelessly across the world, guiding countless practitioners and establishing Dharma centers and places of learning to preserve and transmit the Buddha\u2019s authentic teachings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">T<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here are different ways of mourning, one way of mourning is mourning a loss, and it is kind of emotional due to attachment,\u201d says Trinlay Rinpoche in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kudung, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=XAGTp3AMivY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Final Flame<\/a>, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a documentary by Tokpa Korlo on Shamarpa\u2019s forty-nine-day voyage<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which Jigme Rinpoche had asked him to follow. Trinlay Rinpoche continues:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here we are in the presence of a highly accomplished master who is just pursuing his activity, and so it\u2019s not necessarily anything to be sad about for him. Of course it can be sad for us because we don\u2019t have his physical presence but it doesn\u2019t mean that we don\u2019t have his continuous blessing, and it is mainly the occasion for each and everyone of us to practice.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Here we retrace this voyage,<\/strong> chronicled in the inspiring documentary filmed by Tokpa, who recalls those forty-nine days as the most powerful time in his life.&nbsp;<strong> As the 17th Karmapa explains <\/strong>in the film, the term \u201cmissing someone\u201d<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is more adequately translated in Tibetan as \u201cremembering someone\u201d. He prostrates in front of the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kudung<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (honorific term for a master\u2019s remains) and meditates there, seated on the floor. The Gyalwa Karmapa leads the procession, walking in front of the hearse, Lama Jigme Rinpoche follows behind it. The Gyalwa Karmapa leads the procession to settle the kudung in the main shrine hall. <strong>Night and day<\/strong>, people from around India flock to pay their respect and pray in front of Shamarpa\u2019s kudung.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The Gyalwa Karmapa conducts daily pujas, accompanied by monastic and secular practitioners from around the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kibi-edu.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>KIBI<\/strong> <\/a>fulfilled a wish of the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa, carried through by Shamar Rinpoche, who<strong> inaugurated it in 1990<\/strong> alongside the President of India at the time. Since then, KIBI offers a<strong> diploma programme<\/strong> in Buddhist Studies, including courses in philosophy, history, religion and languages, taught by highly-trained monastic and lay teachers, as well as public meditation courses. Thousands of children, women and men from surrounding villages crowd the streets to pay respect, pressing to <strong>offer khatas and flowers<\/strong> and receive blessings, as the decorated hearse makes stops along the way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Upon arrival in Kalimpong, Shamar Rinpoche\u2019s kudung is <strong>placed in<\/strong> the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.diwakar.org\"> Shri Diwakar Vihara Buddhist Research<\/a> and Educational Institute<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Devotees from all schools of Buddhism flock to pay respect. Gyalwa Karmapa and monks conduct pujas, including Vajrayogini puja, the Five Deities and Charkasamvara practice as a form of offering. Monks from different monasteries in Sikkim and Darjeeling district and further afield come every day to perform pujas and <strong>pay their respects.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Founded in 2002 by K\u00fcnzig Shamar Rinpoche, this <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shedra<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, place of higher studies, of<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fers a ten-year course in Buddhist philosophy<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Graduates are awarded the title of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acharya<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, several of whom come every year to teach in centers in Europe and the United States.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;nextgen &#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; background_color=&#8221;RGBA(255,255,255,0)&#8221; custom_margin=&#8221;||||false|false&#8221; custom_padding=&#8221;0px||||false|false&#8221; border_width_bottom=&#8221;1px&#8221; border_color_bottom=&#8221;#b87d06&#8243; locked=&#8221;off&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221;]ngg_shortcode_2_placeholder[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;20 juillet 2014&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #b87d06;\">July 20, 2014<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <em>kundung<\/em> leaves for Paro, Bhutan, highlighting Shamar Rinpoche\u2019s close ties to the Royal family who <strong>consider him as a revered guide and teacher.<\/strong> His Majesty Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, Queen Mother Ashi Tshering Pemo, the prime minister and devoted Bhutanese pay their respect to Shamarpa\u2019s kudung.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;nextgen &#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; background_color=&#8221;RGBA(255,255,255,0)&#8221; custom_margin=&#8221;||||false|false&#8221; custom_padding=&#8221;0px||||false|false&#8221; border_width_bottom=&#8221;1px&#8221; border_color_bottom=&#8221;#b87d06&#8243; locked=&#8221;off&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221;]ngg_shortcode_3_placeholder[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;28 juillet 2014&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #b87d06;\">July 28,2014<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <em>kudung<\/em><\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong> journey<\/strong> to Nepal is delayed due to difficulties in obtaining travel authorizations and permits. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even these problems are a bodhisattva\u2019s wish, and because of this one circumstance, everyone was able to connect,<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recalls Jigme Rinpoche in the documentary<\/span><b>. <\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once the green light is received, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">K\u00fcnzig Shamarpa\u2019s kudung arrives at Kathmandu\u2019s Tribuhvan Airport. Once again, thousands of people line the streets from the airport to Shar Minub Monastery, offering flowers and khatas along the way. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019ll never forget, it was endless people as far as the eye could see on all sides, unbelievable,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> r<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ecalls Tokpa. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The motorcade carrying the kudung slowly circumambulates Swayambhu stupa, in front of Shamarpa\u2019s Sri Maha Vihar<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">monastery<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kudung is then placed in the main hall of Shar Minub, the monastery, retreat center and learning institution founded by Shamar Rinpoche, which was still in construction at the time.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All the Karma Kagyu monks joined together, over one thousand of them and every day did pujas. Between seven to ten thousand people came every day from all over Nepal, devotees from different Buddhist schools \u2013 Mahayana, Theravada, Vajrayana, and from different tribes,<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jigme Rinpoche in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Final Flame<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avalokeshvara and Hevajra practice are conducted as offerings.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From the moment the kudung arrived in Kathmandu until the cremation, there were constantly rainbow coloured clouds which were quite amazing to see. I had never seen that before.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recalls Trinlay Rinpoche<br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;31 juillet 2014&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #b87d06;\">July 31, 2014<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Shamarpa had requested<\/strong> that his cremation take place at Shar Minub Monastery. The cremation ceremonies are led by the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa, beginning with six pujas simultaneously conducted by<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> different eminent Buddhist masters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the area at the front, directly facing the cremation stupa, Karmapa leads the puja of Gyalwa Gyamtso (Sanskrit: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jinasag\u0101ra<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). Also at the front facing the cremation stupa, Sakya master Luding Khen Rinpoche of Ngor Monastery leads the puja of Kye Dorje (Skt: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hevajra<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) with several masters. To the south, the puja of Mitrugpa (Skt: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ak\u1e63hobhya<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) is performed by Lektsho Lop\u00f6n of the central monastic body of Bhutan (Drukpa Kagyu). To the north, from the Nyingma school, Tsikey Chokling Rinpoche performs Samantabhadra\u2019s Heart Essence fire puja of Dorje Sempa (Skt: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vajrasattva)<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 Also to the north, Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoche leads the puja of Dorje Pamo (Skt: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vajrayogini<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). To the south, Trungram Gyaltrul Rinpoche and Lopon Rinpoche (Karma Kagyu) perform the puja of Korlo Demchok (Skt: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chakrasamvara<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>These six pujas<\/strong> are followed by the fire offering <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Tib: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jinsek<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of the kudung, where <strong>the ceremonial fire was lit<\/strong> under the stupa,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as per tradition, by a young boy who had never met Shamar Rinpoche. Des milliers d\u2019enfants, de femmes et d\u2019hommes des villages environnants se pressent dans les rues, tentant d\u2019<strong>offrir fleurs et katas<\/strong> au passage du corbillard richement d\u00e9cor\u00e9 pour rendre hommage et en recevoir les b\u00e9n\u00e9dictions.<\/p><p>\u00c0 son arriv\u00e9e \u00e0 Kalimpong, le <em>kudung<\/em> de Shamar Rinpoch\u00e9 est<strong> plac\u00e9 dans l\u2019Institut bouddhiste<\/strong> de recherche et d\u2019\u00e9ducation Shri Diwakar Vihara. Une fois le feu vert re\u00e7u, le <em>kudung<\/em> de K\u00fcnzig Shamarpa arrive \u00e0 l\u2019a\u00e9roport Tribuhvan de Katmandou. Une fois de plus, des milliers de personnes se pressent dans les rues, depuis l\u2019a\u00e9roport jusqu\u2019au monast\u00e8re de Sharminub, offrant fleurs et katas tout au long du parcours,<\/p><\/blockquote><p>se souvient Jigm\u00e9 Rinpoch\u00e9 dans le documentaire.<\/p><p>\u00ab Je n\u2019oublierai jamais ; il y avait une foule immense \u00e0 perte de vue, c\u2019\u00e9tait incroyable \u00bb, se souvient Tokpa. Au sud, la puja de Mitrugpa (sanskrit : <em>Ak\u1e63hobhya<\/em>) est accomplie par Lektsho Lop\u00f6n, du Corps monastique central du Bhoutan (Drukpa Kagyu).
