The news represented a unique and historic opportunity, as the gelongma vows did not exist in Tibet <sup id=\"ref1\"><a href=\"#note1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup>. Furthermore, the vinaya of the Vietnamese schools follows the same tradition as that of the Tibetan schools, the Mulasarvastivadin tradition. The Vinayapitaka of the Mulasarvastivadins, which constitutes the vinaya of the Tibetan monastic schools, comprises thirteen volumes in the Narthang edition of the Kangyur (words of the Buddha) as well as several commentaries in the Tengyur. The 16th Karmapa, Rangjung Rikpe Dorje, wished to introduce the gelongma monastic tradition into the Kagyu lineage.<sup id=\"ref2\"><a href=\"#note2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup>Thich Nhat Hanh\u2019s invitation also marked an auspicious connection, as it coincided with the beginnings of the monastery at Kundreul Ling.[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; custom_margin=&#8221;||-1px|||&#8221; custom_css_free_form=&#8221;img.inline-zoom {|| transition: transform 0.3s ease;|| display: inline-block;|| vertical-align: middle;|| max-width: 100%;||}||||img.inline-zoom:hover {|| transform: scale(2);|| z-index: 10;||}&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>With the agreement of Lama Gendun Rinpoche, <strong>a group of thirteen nuns<\/strong> of various nationalities set out from Kundreul Ling for Plum Village for the ceremony on August 5, 1994, two months after the end of their retreat. Previously, in June 1987, they had received the getsulma disciplines (novice disciplines, 36 disciplines) in the small temple with the 3rd Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoche.<\/p>\n<p>The novice disciplines (Tib. getsulma) are a step towards full ordination (Tib. gelongma), which involves more precepts. Belonging to the Vinaya basket, which deals with ethical conduct, these disciplines were codified after the Buddha\u2019s parinirvana and are far from being a set of rules devoid of meaning that just have to be applied. <strong>Each of the 364 precepts<\/strong> refers to a specific situation that occurred during the Buddha\u2019s lifetime, and, for each, he indicated the appropriate attitude to adopt. The community, which was forming at that time, structured itself around the Buddha\u2019s instructions. The disciplines provide a framework for training the mind and protecting body, speech, and mind so as not to follow directions contrary to the liberation from suffering.<\/p>\n<p>The nuns were asked to <strong>arrive at Plum Village two weeks before<\/strong> the ordination ceremony to receive explanations of the gelongma disciplines from a senior sister of the congregation. Then, <strong>on August 5, 1994, Thich Nhat Hanh himself<\/strong> transmitted the disciplines to the nuns gathered at Plum Village, some from Dhagpo Kundreul Ling and others from Plum Village. This ceremony forged strong ties with this community.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>The fact that Thich Nhat Hanh agreed to transmit full ordination to us is proof of his great trust in Lama Gendun Rinpoche, says Kemtcho. It was the first time this transmission had taken place in France and in Europe, and as such it was a very important event, including for Thich Nhat Hanh&#8217;s sangha.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;nextgen &#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; background_color=&#8221;RGBA(255,255,255,0)&#8221; custom_margin=&#8221;||||false|false&#8221; custom_padding=&#8221;0px||||false|false&#8221; locked=&#8221;off&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221;]ngg_shortcode_0_placeholder[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; custom_css_free_form=&#8221;img.inline-zoom {|| transition: transform 0.3s ease;|| display: inline-block;|| vertical-align: middle;|| max-width: 100%;||}||||img.inline-zoom:hover {|| transform: scale(2);|| z-index: 10;||}&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>Subsequently, <strong>on two other occasions, in 1996 and 2000<\/strong>, nuns from our school were able to participate in this transmission of the <em>gelongma<\/em> disciplines when the Vietnamese master gave them. Yeshe Zangmo from Dhagpo M\u00f6hra (Germany) participated in the ceremony in 2000 with three other nuns. She was motivated by her trust in Lama Gendun Rinpoche, who had often emphasized the importance of the vows and given explanations about them.<\/p>\n<p>She recalls,<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>Thich Nhat Hanh had invited many female abbots from different monasteries in Vietnam where they had been fully ordained nuns all their lives. It was very rare. The stay was memorable<\/em>.<em> We lived with the nuns of Plum Village for a while and shared their daily schedule. It was very interesting because normally this is not possible, but it was a condition. This time allowed them to receive the necessary explanations and familiarize themselves with the nuns&#8217; way of life. Most of the nuns at Plum Village come from Asia and are accustomed to community life. They have almost no possessions and live several people to one room. We are more individualistic. I really liked it and admire them,\u201c said Yeshe Zangmo. <\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>During this period, sisters who were among Thich Nhat Hanh\u2019s first Western disciples (Sister Annabelle and Sister Gina) explained the <em>gelongma<\/em> disciplines to them.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>So we had a sort of education there before full ordination. Thich Nhat Hanh invited us to his cottage and gave us a teaching and a tea ceremony. It was very wonderful. It was a blessing. Lama Gendun Rinpoche also had a lot of confidence in him, <\/em>she recalls.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;nextgen &#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; background_color=&#8221;RGBA(255,255,255,0)&#8221; custom_margin=&#8221;||||false|false&#8221; custom_padding=&#8221;||||false|false&#8221; locked=&#8221;off&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221;]ngg_shortcode_1_placeholder[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; custom_margin=&#8221;||-36px|||&#8221; custom_css_free_form=&#8221;img.inline-zoom {|| transition: transform 0.3s ease;|| display: inline-block;|| vertical-align: middle;|| max-width: 100%;||}||||img.inline-zoom:hover {|| transform: scale(2);|| z-index: 10;||}&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>Since 2000,<strong> the five German-speaking <em>gelongmas<\/em><\/strong> of Dhagpo M\u00f6hra try to gather monthly to recite the disciplines together with others online.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>These disciplines were developed from practical experiences dating back to the time of the Buddha. They were never intended to be something heavy duty, <\/em>explains Yeshe Zangmo.<em> Of the more than three hundred vows, the instructions received emphasize the importance of keeping the essential vows; others are of a more secondary nature or even culturally distant from us. You have to see where you are in a little danger, where you can lose your attention. If you understand them well, these disciplines are very helpful. You avoid losing yourself in weak moments. I\u2019ve never thought of them as a pressure but as a help. It is a very strong spiritual foundation.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; custom_css_free_form=&#8221;img.inline-zoom {|| transition: transform 0.3s ease;|| display: inline-block;|| vertical-align: middle;|| max-width: 100%;||}||||img.inline-zoom:hover {|| transform: scale(2);|| z-index: 10;||}&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>Currently, Dhagpo Kundreul Ling and Dhagpo M\u00f6hra count 15 fully ordained nuns. In 2018, Jigme Rinpoche asked Yeshe Zangmo to share this story at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.karmapa.org\/kagyu-monlam-2018-the-story-so-far-photos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Karma Kagyu Meetings<\/a> held during the Kagy\u00fc M\u00f6nlams in Bodhgaya, India. \u201cThe rinpoches present were quite astonished actually,\u201d she recalls.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;nextgen &#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; background_color=&#8221;RGBA(255,255,255,0)&#8221; custom_margin=&#8221;||||false|false&#8221; custom_padding=&#8221;||||false|false&#8221; locked=&#8221;off&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221;]ngg_shortcode_2_placeholder[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; custom_css_free_form=&#8221;img.inline-zoom {|| transition: transform 0.3s ease;|| display: inline-block;|| vertical-align: middle;|| max-width: 100%;||}||||img.inline-zoom:hover {|| transform: scale(2);|| z-index: 10;||}&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>Upon<a href=\"https:\/\/www.karmapa.org\/thich-nhat-hanhs-passing-karmapas-message\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> the passing of Thich Nhat Hanh in January 2022<\/a>, Thaye Dorje, His Holiness the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa, emphasized the significance of the open-mindedness of one of the most revered Buddhist masters of our time.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_testimonial _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><em>Our Karma Kagyu lineage had a very special spiritual bond with Master Th\u00edch Nhat H\u1ea1nh, for it is due to his kindness that our nuns from Dhagpo Kundreul Ling were able to receive the full monastic ordination of the Bhikshuni (gelongma in Tibetan) Vows at Plum Village in 1994. Since the practice of Vinaya is the ground for all merit and wisdom, there is no greater gift than that to the lineage of Buddha Dharma.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_testimonial][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; custom_css_free_form=&#8221;img.inline-zoom {|| transition: transform 0.3s ease;|| display: inline-block;|| vertical-align: middle;|| max-width: 100%;||}||||img.inline-zoom:hover {|| transform: scale(2);|| z-index: 10;||}&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>The presence of a monastic community with fully ordained practitioners is one of the conditions for the Buddha Dharma to be fully established in a place. Otherwise, it is present but not established. Moreover, in 2019, Thaye Dorje, His Holiness the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa, concluded his teaching at Dhagpo Kagyu Ling with these words:<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_testimonial _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><em>We as practitioners must find a way to appreciate the bhikshus and bhikshunis, for whatever level of practice they are in. This is one of the instructions that I received from many of my teachers, that we feel that somehow we have the right to criticize concepts, but this is something that we have to be very careful about, because the various individuals who have entered the various levels of the pratimoksha vows, they are doing what they can and it&#8217;s something that we cannot actually measure. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The amount of merits they accumulate and the amount of superstitions they carry too, of course, but nevertheless if you can find a way to rejoice that simply having their presence in our lives does bring all of these auspicious conditions together, so therefore this is something that we have to appreciate. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>And I hope that the conditions will remain as long as possible, not for the population you know, not for the quantity, but for their presence simply. Not necessarily to say quality also, but really simply for their presence. It does something on a psychological basis, psychological level, emotional level, to each and every one of us. A daughter of King Trisong Detsen received the gelongma disciplines, but it is not certain that these disciplines were transmitted after her. In order to ensure the validity of the transmission, the ceremony requires the presence of at least four gelongmas in a place where the Dharma is not fully established, and ten if the Dharma is established there. The debate remains open.<\/h6>\n<h6><sup>[2]<\/sup> There is a different lineage of transmission of vows in a Chinese tradition given in Hong Kong. In 1972, the 16th Karmapa sent the Englishwoman Freda Bedi (gelongma Ketchok Palmo) there, making her the first fully ordained Western nun. Recently, Je Khenpo Rinpoche, the highest spiritual leader in Bhutan, began giving this <em>gelongma<\/em> ordination.<\/h6>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text disabled_on=&#8221;on|on|off&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; text_font=&#8221;Roboto||||||||&#8221; text_font_size=&#8221;13px&#8221; text_line_height=&#8221;1em&#8221; custom_padding=&#8221;||0px|||&#8221; locked=&#8221;off&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #808080;\">These photos come from our archives or were collected as part of the research for Dhagpo Kagyu Ling\u2019s 50th anniversary. La nouvelle repr\u00e9sente en effet une opportunit\u00e9 unique et historique, car les engagements de <i>gelongma <\/i>n\u2019\u00e9taient pas pr\u00e9sents au Tibet <sup id=\"ref1\"><a href=\"#note1\">1<\/a><\/sup>. De plus, le vinaya des \u00e9coles vietnamiennes suit la m\u00eame tradition que celui des \u00e9coles tib\u00e9taines, la tradition mulasarvastivadin. Le Vinayapitaka des mulasarvastivadins, qui constitue le vinaya des \u00e9coles monastiques tib\u00e9taines, comprend 13 volumes dans l\u2019\u00e9dition Narthang du Kangyur (paroles du Bouddha) ainsi que plusieurs commentaires dans le Tengyur. Le XVI<sup>e<\/sup> Karmapa, Rangjung Rikp\u00e9 Dorj\u00e9, souhaitait introduire la tradition monastique <i>gelongma<\/i> dans la lign\u00e9e kagy\u00fc.<sup id=\"ref2\"><a href=\"#note2\">2<\/a><\/sup> \u00a0L\u2019invitation de Thich Nhat Hanh constitue \u00e9galement un lien auspicieux puisqu\u2019elle co\u00efncide aussi avec les d\u00e9buts du monast\u00e8re \u00e0 Kundreul Ling.<\/p><p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=\"4.27.4\" _module_preset=\"default\" custom_margin=\"||-1px|||\" custom_css_free_form=\"img.inline-zoom {|| transition: transform 0.3s ease;|| display: inline-block;|| vertical-align: middle;|| max-width: 100%;||}||||img.inline-zoom:hover {|| transform: scale(2);|| z-index: 10;||}\" global_colors_info=\"{}\" theme_builder_area=\"post_content\"]<\/p><p>Avec l\u2019accord de lama Guendune Rinpoch\u00e9, <strong>13 moniales<\/strong> de diverses nationalit\u00e9s ont pris le chemin du Village des Pruniers depuis Kundreul Ling, pour la c\u00e9r\u00e9monie du 5 ao\u00fbt 1994, deux mois apr\u00e8s la fin de leur retraite. Auparavant, en juin 1987, elles avaient re\u00e7u les disciplines de <i>getsulma <\/i>(disciplines de novice, 36 disciplines) dans le petit temple avec le III<sup>e<\/sup> Jamgon Kongtrul.<\/p><p>Les disciplines de novice (tib. <i>getsulma<\/i>) sont une \u00e9tape vers l\u2019ordination compl\u00e8te (tib. <i>gelongma<\/i>) qui comporte davantage de pr\u00e9ceptes. Appartenant \u00e0 la Corbeille du Vinaya qui traite de la conduite \u00e9thique, ces disciplines furent codifi\u00e9es apr\u00e8s le parinirvana du Bouddha et ne sont pas des r\u00e8gles \u00e0 appliquer d\u00e9nu\u00e9es de sens. <strong>Chacun des 364 pr\u00e9ceptes<\/strong> fait r\u00e9f\u00e9rence \u00e0 une situation pr\u00e9cise qui s\u2019est d\u00e9roul\u00e9e du vivant du Bouddha, lequel a alors indiqu\u00e9 l\u2019attitude appropri\u00e9e. La communaut\u00e9, en formation \u00e0 cette \u00e9poque, s\u2019est structur\u00e9e autour de ces instructions du Bouddha. Les disciplines constituent un cadre permettant d\u2019entra\u00eener l\u2019esprit et de prot\u00e9ger le corps, la parole et l\u2019esprit afin de ne pas suivre des directions contraires \u00e0 celle de la lib\u00e9ration du mal-\u00eatre.<\/p><p>Il a \u00e9t\u00e9 demand\u00e9 aux moniales d\u2019<strong>arriver au Village des Pruniers quinze jours avant<\/strong> la c\u00e9r\u00e9monie d\u2019ordination pour recevoir l\u2019explication des disciplines de <i>gelongma <\/i>d\u2019une s\u0153ur a\u00een\u00e9e de la congr\u00e9gation. Puis, <strong>le 5 ao\u00fbt 1994, Thich Nhat Hanh lui-m\u00eame<\/strong> a transmis les disciplines aux moniales r\u00e9unies au Village des Pruniers, certaines venant de Dhagpo Kundreul Ling et d\u2019autres du Village des Pruniers. Cette c\u00e9r\u00e9monie tisse des liens forts avec cette communaut\u00e9<b>.<\/b><\/p><blockquote><p><i>Le fait que Thich Nhat Hanh ait accept\u00e9 de nous transmettre la pleine ordination est la preuve d\u2019une grande confiance envers lama Guendune Rinpoch\u00e9, <\/i>dit Kemtcho<i>. Yesh\u00e9 Zangmo de Dhagpo M\u00f6hra (Allemagne) participe \u00e0 la c\u00e9r\u00e9monie en 2000 avec trois autres moniales. C\u2019est la confiance envers lama Guendune Rinpoch\u00e9 qui la motive, car il en avait souvent soulign\u00e9 l\u2019importance et en avait donn\u00e9 des explications.;<\/p><p>Elle se souvient :<\/p><blockquote><p><em>Thich Nhat Hanh avait invit\u00e9 de nombreuses abbesses de diff\u00e9rents monast\u00e8res du Vietnam o\u00f9 elles avaient \u00e9t\u00e9 moniales pleinement ordonn\u00e9es toute leur vie. C\u2019\u00e9tait tr\u00e8s rare.\u00a0 Le s\u00e9jour est m\u00e9morable. Nous avons v\u00e9cu avec les moniales du Village des Pruniers pendant un certain temps, nous avons partag\u00e9 leur programme quotidien. Normalement cela n\u2019est pas possible, mais c\u2019\u00e9tait une condition. Ce temps permet de recevoir les explications n\u00e9cessaires et de se familiariser avec la fa\u00e7on de vivre des moniales. La plupart des moniales du Village des Pruniers viennent d\u2019Asie et sont accoutum\u00e9es \u00e0 la vie en communaut\u00e9. Elles n\u2019ont quasiment aucune possession et vivent \u00e0 plusieurs dans une chambre. Nous sommes plus individualistes. J\u2019ai beaucoup appr\u00e9ci\u00e9 l\u2019exp\u00e9rience et je les admire.\u00a0<\/em><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><\/blockquote><p>Durant cette p\u00e9riode, des s\u0153urs parmi les premi\u00e8res disciples occidentales de Thich Nhat Hanh (S\u0153ur Annabelle et S\u0153ur Gina) leur donnent des explications sur les disciplines de gelongma.\u00a0<\/p><blockquote><p><em>Donc nous avons eu une sorte d\u2019\u00e9ducation l\u00e0-bas avant la pleine ordination. Thich Nhat Hanh nous a re\u00e7ues dans son chalet et nous a donn\u00e9 un enseignement lors d\u2019une c\u00e9r\u00e9monie du th\u00e9. C'\u00e9tait merveilleux, une b\u00e9n\u00e9diction. Elles n\u2019ont jamais \u00e9t\u00e9 con\u00e7ues pour \u00eatre quelque chose de lourd. Sur les plus de 300 v\u0153ux, les instructions re\u00e7ues insistent sur l\u2019importance de garder les v\u0153ux essentiels ; d\u2019autres sont d\u2019ordre plus secondaire ou m\u00eame culturellement loin de nous. Vous devez voir l\u00e0 o\u00f9 il y a une zone de danger pour vous, l\u00e0 o\u00f9 vous risquez de perdre votre vigilance. Si on les comprend bien, ces disciplines sont tr\u00e8s aidantes ; vous \u00e9vitez de vous perdre dans des moments de faiblesse. Je ne les ai jamais ressenties comme une pression mais comme une aide.
