With some 80 students enrolled, this course, based on teachings given for nearly fifteen years by qualified<em> khenpos and acharyas<\/em> (1), focuses on the textual study of the Dharma, an essential aspect of the Buddhist path, along with meditation and daily application.<\/p>\n<p>On the eve of his departure from France in 1977, <a href=\"https:\/\/dhagpo.org\/en\/anchoring-dharma-west-advice-16-gyalwa-karmapa\/\">the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa wrote in a letter:<\/a><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_testimonial _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; locked=&#8221;off&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dhagpo Kagy\u00fc Ling will be a place where the profound teachings of Lord Buddha Shakyamuni can be studied, understood and practiced. The immaculate teachings were propounded for the benefit of all sentient beings. The establishment of the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dhagpo.org\/15-juillet-1994-lancement-de-luniversite-dete-de-dhagpo-kagyu-ling\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">summer university in 1994<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> helped plant the first seeds that would blossom over the years into the curriculum\u2019s current form.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A different text is studied each morning. Everyone commits to attending to study one or several texts they choose: Gampopa&#8217;s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ornament of Precious Liberation<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Entry to the State of a Pandit<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a by the 1st Mipham Rinpoche; <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Abhidharma Kosha<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Vasubandhu; <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Stages of Meditation<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Kamalashila; <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treatise on the Supreme Continuity of the Great Vehicle<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Asanga; <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clarification of Reasoning<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Yongzin Namgyal Drakpa (a text on Buddhist epistemology); <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Systematic Presentation of the Classes of Tantras<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the 1st S\u00f6nam Tsemo Rinpoche. Each session begins with a period of meditative practice and continues with the study of the teachings until 10:00 a.m.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-328236  alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/dhagpo.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/10_2016-LJR-retraite-tara_IMG_3787-scaled-e1756354053237.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"346\" height=\"377\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <strong>curriculum<\/strong> as it stands today is the result of a long evolution guided by <strong>Lama Jigme Rinpoche<\/strong>, with the contribution of <strong>Khenpo Ch\u00f6drak Rinpoche<\/strong>. In September 2005, Jigme Rinpoche began teaching Gyalse Thogme\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thirty-seven Practices of Bodhisattvas <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">every week to residents and practitioners living near Dhagpo. The beginnings of a curriculum for residents took shape in 2006.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Jigme Rinpoche taught <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Ornament of Precious Liberation<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to lamas, druplas, and residents between 2006 and 2008 and called upon Khenpo Ch\u00f6drak Rinpoche to teach fundamental texts that would enable residents to share accurate information about Buddhism with practitioners coming to Dhagpo to attend courses. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-328260  alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/dhagpo.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/17_2019-09_question-reponses-kejuk_KCR-biblio.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"414\" height=\"311\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDuring retreats twice a year, in January and September, Khenpo Ch\u00f6drak explained a text, drawing many parallels with practice and showing us the value of studying these texts, while also making connections with other topics such as the tantras,\u201d recalls Olivier L, a resident at Dhagpo since 2003. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Khenpo Ch\u00f6drak thus offered an introduction to Buddhism (what characterizes the Buddhist tradition in terms of view, conduct, and meditation), the history of Buddhism (in India and Tibet), and the three vehicles. Then, starting in 2007, he taught Kamalashila&#8217;s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stages of Meditation<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for <strong>two years<\/strong> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Entry to the State of Pandita<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> starting in 2010 <strong>for six years<\/strong> during week-long retreats in January and September.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; custom_css_free_form=&#8221;img.inline-zoom {||  transition: transform 0.3s ease;||  display: inline-block;||  vertical-align: middle;||  max-width: 100%;||}||||img.inline-zoom:hover {||  transform: scale(2);||  z-index: 10;||}&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-328375  alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/dhagpo.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/09_2015-retraite-targyen_IMG_8620.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"664\" height=\"412\" \/><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Khenpo Tenzin taught the text on the three disciplines entitled <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Branch of the Path of the Natural Great Perfection<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the shastra called <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Identifying the Three Commitments <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by Ngari Penchen Pema Wangyel, <strong>starting in 2008.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jigme Rinpoche encourages students to review the teachings they receive in groups. \u201cThis work makes it easier to acquire knowledge, compare it with other viewpoints, and correct our mistakes,\u201d continues Olivier L.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>As students showed serious commitment,<\/strong> \u201cduring a meeting with the residents in 2009, Jigme Rinpoche explained that the time had come to set up a more structured curriculum,\u201d<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recalls Emmanuelle C., who had just completed a three-year retreat. She became one of the driving forces behind the process, along with Anne J. and the lamas present on site. \u201cHe asked us to start with the four fundamental thoughts and share with the residents the explanations we had received during retreat on Jamgon Kongtrul&#8217;s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Torch of Certainty<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Jigme Rinpoche followed the process closely<\/strong> and gave regular guidance on how to proceed. He emphasized the need to learn how to meditate and develop enlightened mind:\u00a0<\/span><em><br \/><\/em><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_testimonial _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; locked=&#8221;off&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><em>First of all, you have to meditate. If you don&#8217;t have the basics of meditation, you can&#8217;t visualize the yidams or practice deeper meditations,\u201d Jigme Rinpoche explained at the time. \u201cWhen you learn to meditate, if you don&#8217;t really know why you are doing it, that&#8217;s another problem. Most people don&#8217;t really know what meditation is and think that the goal is simply to relax. If you understand the four thoughts, you will turn away from samsara. These four thoughts are like a description of reality. Then you will truly understand the meaning of meditation. Next, if you don&#8217;t learn what enlightened mind is, you run the risk of becoming selfish and, once again, you will not achieve the desired results. It is therefore essential to understand bodhicitta well. If you follow the ten chapters of Shantideva&#8217;s Bodhicaryavatara (The Way of the Bodhisattva), you will know how to fulfill the bodhisattva vows. Everything then falls into place because the foundations are clear. This foundation for meditation is very important. Without it, you cannot concentrate and progress properly.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_testimonial][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; custom_css_free_form=&#8221;img.inline-zoom {||  transition: transform 0.3s ease;||  display: inline-block;||  vertical-align: middle;||  max-width: 100%;||}||||img.inline-zoom:hover {||  transform: scale(2);||  z-index: 10;||}&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-328240  alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/dhagpo.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/23_2022-dec_480312054_1042540417911713_5543896029291258752_n.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"345\" height=\"345\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thus, starting in 2013, in order to further cultivate this aspect of bodhicitta and learn the bodhisattva path, Jigme Rinpoche asked Olivier L. to repeat the teachings on Shantideva&#8217;s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Way of the Bodhisattva <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that he had received at the Karmapa International Buddhist Institute (KIBI) in New Delhi. He spent twelve years on it, at a pace of one session per week, reaching the end of the work this year, 2025. \u201cI didn&#8217;t know how long it would take, but I knew it would take time!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Starting in 2014<\/strong>, the students were ready for more intensive study retreats to be set up. From this year on, the center has remained closed to the public throughout January, enabling residents and practitioners from the surrounding area to focus on studying texts. Jigme Rinpoche invites khenpos and acharyas from Kalimpong shedra <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(2) <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in India to explain fundamental Buddhist texts. Once taught, these texts are reviewed every morning in study groups throughout the year. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To ensure active learning, the explanations received are repeated. In this way, the Dhagpo Institute develops from within; residents and practitioners living in the surrounding area who have joined this dynamic of active and collective learning acquire the elements necessary to journey along the Buddhist path and, in doing so, share their acquired knowledge with practitioners who attend Dhagpo\u2019s public courses. Regardless of age, gender, or educational background, everyone can take part in this process. This is how the Dharma is kept alive and transmitted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <strong>common culture of Dharma learning is thus in place<\/strong>\u2014the essential vocation of the Institute, which was inaugurated in 2013. Since September 2023, practitioners close to the center have been joining the group study in ever-increasing numbers. &#8220;At first, I was worried that I wouldn&#8217;t make it, but after all, I came to live near the center, and it would be a shame not to take advantage of what it has to offer,\u201d says Jo\u00eblle O., a member of the fundraising team. \u201cThe internal curriculum gives me discipline, a framework for studying and practicing together, and it&#8217;s a way of being together with the community.&#8221; Similarly, Dominique L., who is also involved in the daily activities of Dhagpo, participates in the internal curriculum. &#8220;I am always full of enthusiasm. I wanted to study, but I find it difficult to do so on my own at home. Studying gives meaning to all the other teachings and also allows me to make connections between the texts and to link study with contemplation and meditation. I stick with it\u2014and I&#8217;ve learned to let go when I don&#8217;t understand! &#8220;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This dynamic of active Dharma learning is now expanding to Dhagpo Kundreul Ling and Bodhi Path Renchen Ulm. Based on the instructions left by the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa and systematized by K\u00fcnzig Shamarpa, a high-quality education is now available at Dhagpo Kagyu Ling for anyone who wishes to get involved. Thus, \u201ceveryone can develop with the different aspects of practice\u2014learning, meditation, and activity in service of others. La plupart des gens ne savent pas vraiment ce qu'est exactement la m\u00e9ditation et pensent que le but est simplement de se d\u00e9tendre. Si vous comprenez les quatre pens\u00e9es, vous vous d\u00e9tournerez du samsara. Ces quatre pens\u00e9es sont comme une description de la r\u00e9alit\u00e9. Vous comprendrez alors vraiment le sens de la m\u00e9ditation. Ensuite, si vous n'apprenez pas ce qu\u2019est l\u2019esprit d\u2019\u00e9veil, vous courrez le risque de devenir \u00e9go\u00efste et, une fois de plus, vous n'obtiendrez pas les r\u00e9sultats escompt\u00e9s. Il est donc essentiel de bien comprendre la <\/em>bodhichitta<em>. Si vous suivez les dix chapitres du Bodhicaryavatara de Shantideva (la Marche vers l\u2019\u00e9veil), vous saurez comment respecter les engagements du bodhisattva. Tout s'assemble alors, car les bases sont claires. Cette base pour la m\u00e9ditation est tr\u00e8s importante. Ainsi pendant tout le mois de janvier, le centre ne re\u00e7oit pas de public, les r\u00e9sidents et pratiquants alentour se concentrent sur l\u2019\u00e9tude de texte.<\/p>\r\n<p>Jigm\u00e9 Rinpoch\u00e9 invite des <em>khenpos<\/em> et des acharyas du <em>sh\u00e9dra<\/em> de Kalimpong (Inde) qui viennent expliquer des textes fondamentaux du bouddhisme. Une fois enseign\u00e9s, ces textes sont <strong>r\u00e9vis\u00e9s pendant toute l\u2019ann\u00e9e, chaque matin en groupe d\u2019\u00e9tude<\/strong>. Pour que l\u2019apprentissage soit actif, les explications re\u00e7ues au pr\u00e9alable sont r\u00e9p\u00e9t\u00e9es. Il s\u2019agit de m\u00e9moriser la structure du texte comme une carte, puis de restituer exactement ce qui avait \u00e9t\u00e9 expliqu\u00e9 afin d\u2019\u00e9viter toute interpr\u00e9tation.<\/p>\r\n<p>\u00ab La restitution permet principalement de ne pas oublier ce que l\u2019on a re\u00e7u, sinon les d\u00e9tails de l\u2019enseignement sont oubli\u00e9s avec le temps, explique Emmanuelle \u00bb . Les restitutions commencent avec l\u2019<em>Entr\u00e9e vers l\u2019\u00e9tat de pandit<\/em>, puis d\u2019autres textes s'ajoutent au fil des ann\u00e9es.<br \/>En 2016, Jigm\u00e9 Rinpoch\u00e9 demande aux \u00e9tudiants engag\u00e9s de partager les textes \u00e9tudi\u00e9s lors de ses diff\u00e9rents stages publics.<\/p>\r\n<p><img class=\"wp-image-328244  alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/dhagpo.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/20_2019-11-05-\u2013-16-\u2013-\u00a9-2019-ThroughJacquesEyes_zagmo-nangdeun.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"602\" height=\"307\" \/>\u00ab Il n\u2019y a pas de s\u00e9paration entre le cursus dit interne et le programme public \u00bb , explique Emmanuelle C. Ainsi, l\u2019Institut de Dhagpo se d\u00e9ploie de l\u2019int\u00e9rieur : les r\u00e9sidents ainsi que les pratiquants vivant autour qui ont rejoint cette dynamique d\u2019apprentissage actif et collectif acqui\u00e8rent les \u00e9l\u00e9ments n\u00e9cessaires \u00e0 leur cheminement bouddhiste et se faisant, ils partagent avec les stagiaires de Dhagpo les connaissances acquises. Peu importe l\u2019\u00e2ge, le sexe ou le bagage \u00e9ducatif, chacun peut prendre part \u00e0 ce processus. C\u2019est ainsi notamment que le Dharma est vivant et se transmet.<\/p>\r\n<p>Ainsi, une culture commune de l\u2019apprentissage du Dharma est en place \u2013 vocation essentielle de<a href=\"https:\/\/dhagpo.org\/13-juin-2013-inauguration-institut-dhagpo-kagyu-ling\/\"> l\u2019Institut inaugur\u00e9 en 2013<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Depuis septembre 2023<\/strong>, les pratiquants proches du centre rejoignent, toujours plus nombreux, l'\u00e9tude en groupe. \u00ab Au d\u00e9but, j\u2019\u00e9tais inqui\u00e8te de ne pas y arriver mais apr\u00e8s tout je suis venue vivre pr\u00e8s du centre et ce serait dommage de ne pas profiter de ce qu\u2019il nous offre. Le cursus interne me donne une discipline, un cadre pour \u00e9tudier et pratiquer ensemble, et c\u2019est une fa\u00e7on d\u2019\u00eatre ensemble avec la communaut\u00e9 \u00bb, dit Jo\u00eblle O., membre de l\u2019\u00e9quipe de recherche de fonds.<\/p>\r\n<p>De m\u00eame, Dominique L., aussi engag\u00e9e dans l\u2019activit\u00e9 quotidienne de Dhagpo, participe au cursus interne. \u00ab Je suis toujours pleine d\u2019enthousiasme, j\u2019avais envie d\u2019\u00e9tudier, mais j\u2019ai du mal \u00e0 le faire seule chez moi. L\u2019\u00e9tude apporte du sens \u00e0 tous les autres enseignements et me permet aussi de faire des liens entre les textes, et de relier l\u2019\u00e9tude avec la contemplation et la m\u00e9ditation.
