In 1977\u20131978, Rangjung Rigpe Dorje, His Holiness the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa, visited Europe for the second time. He returned to most of the countries he had visited on his first trip to the West in 1974\u20131975, adding three new ones to his itinerary (Belgium, Greece, and Austria). Karmapa\u2019s second trip to Europe was organized to culminate with the consecration in Dordogne of the land donated by the Benson family in 1975<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Gyalwa Karmapa traveled throughout Europe in a red bus fitted out by his early students. Half of the seats were removed and armchairs for Karmapa and his entourage were installed. Stenciled on the side of the vehicle were the words Karma Kagyu Trust, the name of the first trust established in Europe by the Karma Kagyu lineage, while the hood of the bus featured the following aspiration:<\/p>\n

\"\"Karmapa stayed at Chaban Castle with the Benson family.<\/strong> On the C\u00f4te de Jor, a tent was erected on the site where the temple was to stand (it would eventually be built in Auvergne). From October 28 to November 2, 1977,<\/strong> Karmapa led a week of accumulation of the Korlo Demchok practice (one of the main yidams of the lineage), accompanied by the 3rd Jamg\u00f6n Kongtrul, Lama Gendun Rinpoche, Lama Jigme Rinpoche, an entourage of monks specialized in rituals, and in the presence of hundreds of practitioners and curious onlookers from across Europe.<\/p>\n

On November 2<\/strong>, at the end of the week, Karmapa, settled upon his practice seat, officially signed the deed of donation of the land, which henceforth legally belongs to the Karma Kagyu Lama association, founded shortly before.<\/p>\n

Through this intensive practice, the 16th Karmapa took possession of the site that had been offered to him to make the Buddha Dharma accessible<\/strong> to as many people as possible. On this autumn day, he sealed the blessing of the Karma Kagy\u00fc lineage in the P\u00e9rigord region. He named the place Dhagpo Kagyu Ling, the place of transmission of Gampopa\u2019s teachings<\/em>, and designated it as his main seat, the heart of the lineage\u2019s European network.<\/p>\n

Several centuries earlier, in 1189, the 1st Karmapa, D\u00fcsum Khyenpa (1110\u20131193), performed the same gestures and spoke the same words in Tibet when he founded Tsurphu Monastery, the seat of the Karmapas. Several centuries and thousands of kilometers separate these two events, yet their significance is identical\u2014to anchor the blessing of the Karma Kagy\u00fc lineage in a place where it will be preserved and from where it can radiate to be of benefit to sentient beings.<\/p>\n

The terms yidam, lineage, <\/em>and blessing<\/em> may seem beyond our novice understanding. They may resonate too intellectually in our theory-focused ears. During his visit to mark the 40th anniversary of Dhagpo Kundreul Ling on June 29, 2024, Thaye Dorje, His Holiness the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa, explained that it is a miracle that Dharma environments have been able to appear and endure\u2014the miracle of interdependence and an open heart,<\/p>\n

Therefore, if our condition, if our environment is anything, it’s not just a coincidence, it\u2019s not just a sense of destiny, meaning something predetermined; it’s simply a miracle, because of our wishes, our aspirations, and at the same time, because of the blessings of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. […] We talk about the 16th Karmapa and his noble aspirations in a way, as if there is a definite plan for all of us. For the fact that he came to the West, and that there was a definite plan to somehow be the next beacon of hope. And then somehow deliver us to the pure land of Amitabha, or somewhere, or to make this world a better place or something. I don’t believe that. But what I feel is that a bodhisattva can do their best. They know through and through that they cannot change the course of the so-called karma, or if there is a thing called destiny. They know that they cannot change it. All they can do is hope for the best. Hope that something impossible will take place. […] Why this situation is possible, is because our predecessors had great open heart. And therefore, this was somehow, let\u2019s say, made possible.<\/p>\n

En 1977-1978, Rangjung Rikp\u00e9 Dorj\u00e9, Sa Saintet\u00e9 le XVI\u1d49<\/sup> Gyalwa Karmapa se rend pour la seconde fois en Europe. Le Gyalwa Karmapa parcourt l\u2019Europe dans un bus rouge am\u00e9nag\u00e9 par ses \u00e9tudiants de la premi\u00e8re heure\u00a0: la moiti\u00e9 des si\u00e8ges ont \u00e9t\u00e9 retir\u00e9s et des fauteuils pour Karmapa et son entourage y sont install\u00e9s. Par cette pratique intensive, le XVI\u1d49<\/sup> Karmapa prend possession du lieu qui lui a \u00e9t\u00e9 offert,<\/strong> pour que le Dharma du Bouddha soit accessible au plus grand nombre. En ce jour d\u2019automne, il scelle la b\u00e9n\u00e9diction de la lign\u00e9e karma kagy\u00fc en terre p\u00e9rigourdine. Il nommera l\u2019endroit Dhagpo Kagyu Ling, le Lieu de la Transmission des Enseignements de Gampopa et le d\u00e9signera comme son si\u00e8ge principal, c\u0153ur du r\u00e9seau europ\u00e9en de la lign\u00e9e.<\/p>

Plusieurs si\u00e8cles auparavant, en 1189, le I\u1d49\u02b3<\/sup> Karmapa, D\u00fcsum Khyenpa<\/strong> (1110-1193), accomplit les m\u00eames gestes et prononce les m\u00eames paroles, au Tibet, lorsqu\u2019il fonde le si\u00e8ge des Karmapas, le monast\u00e8re de Tsurphu. Plusieurs si\u00e8cles et des milliers de kilom\u00e8tres s\u00e9parent ces deux \u00e9v\u00e9nements dont la signification est pourtant identique\u00a0: ancrer la b\u00e9n\u00e9diction de la lign\u00e9e karma kagy\u00fc en un lieu o\u00f9 elle sera pr\u00e9serv\u00e9e et d\u2019o\u00f9 elle pourra rayonner pour \u00eatre utile aux \u00eatres sensibles.<\/p>

Peut-\u00eatre que la signification des trois termes yidam<\/em>, lign\u00e9e et b\u00e9n\u00e9diction \u00e9chappe \u00e0 notre entendement de n\u00e9ophytes\u2026 Peut-\u00eatre ces termes r\u00e9sonnent-ils de fa\u00e7on trop intellectuelle \u00e0 nos oreilles th\u00e9oricienne. Lors de sa venue dans le cadre des 40 ans de Dhagpo Kundreul Ling le 29 juin 2024, Thay\u00e9 Dorj\u00e9, Sa Saintet\u00e9 le XVII\u1d49<\/sup> Gyalwa Karmapa, explique le fait que des environnements du Dharma aient pu appara\u00eetre et perdurer rel\u00e8ve du miracle, le miracle de l\u2019interd\u00e9pendance et d\u2019un c\u0153ur ouvert\u00a0:<\/p>

Si nos conditions, si notre environnement, tout en fait peut se produire, ce n\u2019est pas une simple co\u00efncidence, ce n\u2019est pas non plus le destin, ce qui signifie que quelque chose serait pr\u00e9destin\u00e9, mais c\u2019est simplement un miracle, gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 nos souhaits, \u00e0 nos aspirations et en m\u00eame temps aux b\u00e9n\u00e9dictions des bouddhas et des bodhisattvas. [\u2026] Nous parlons du XVI\u1d49<\/sup> Karmapa et de ses aspirations nobles comme d\u2019un plan d\u00e9fini pour nous tous. Le fait qu\u2019il soit venu en Occident peut facilement appara\u00eetre comme un plan, comme s\u2019il s\u2019agissait du prochain flambeau porteur d\u2019espoir qui viendrait nous d\u00e9livrer pour nous emmener ensuite dans le champ pur d\u2019Amitabha ou encore pour faire de ce monde un monde meilleur. Je ne crois pas \u00e0 cela. Je pense qu\u2019un bodhisattva fait simplement de son mieux, en sachant parfaitement qu\u2019il ne peut pas changer le cours de ce qui est appel\u00e9 karma, ou le cours du destin, si une telle chose existe. Il sait qu\u2019il ne peut pas le changer. Tout ce qu\u2019il peut faire revient \u00e0 esp\u00e9rer que tout se passera bien, esp\u00e9rer que quelque chose d\u2019impossible puisse se passer. [\u2026] Je pense donc que la raison pour laquelle cette situation est possible, c\u2019est parce que nos pr\u00e9d\u00e9cesseurs avaient un immense c\u0153ur ouvert et c\u2019est ce qui a rendu les choses possibles.\u00a0<\/p>
