Most often, an inner transformation occurs from the first glance, changing the course of a life, as evidenced by a collection of writings on first encounters with this accomplished meditation master\u00a0<span style=\"background-color: #ffffff; font-size: 20px; font-style: inherit; font-variant-ligatures: inherit; font-variant-caps: inherit;\">[1]<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-style: inherit; font-variant-ligatures: inherit; font-variant-caps: inherit;\">. In a short prayer to <\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 20px; font-style: inherit; font-variant-ligatures: inherit; font-variant-caps: inherit;\">Lama Gendun Rinpoche, composed <\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-style: inherit; font-variant-ligatures: inherit; font-variant-caps: inherit;\">at the request of Western disciples in October 1984, <\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 20px; font-style: inherit; font-variant-ligatures: inherit; font-variant-caps: inherit;\">K\u00fcnzig Shamarpa writes,<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe rivers of his compassion flow over predisposed living beings.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>On October 31, 1997<\/strong>, this precious master, \u201cjewel of the community,\u201d <strong>entered parinirvana<\/strong> in his room at Dhagpo Kundreul Ling, after twenty-two years of tirelessly transmitting the pure and authentic Dharma to Westerners, fulfilling the instructions of his root master, the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa Rangjung Rigpe Dorje, whom he had met at the age of thirteen, when the Karmapa was still a young child.<\/p>\n<p>Less than ten days before, on October 22, 1997, Rinpoche participated in the coming out ceremonies of the fourth traditional three-year retreat in the not-yet-completed Great Temple. The thousand buddhas had just been placed in their alcoves. He blessed the 104 men and women who participated in the retreat and close to one thousand practitioners who came for the occasion, including the lamas and druplas who had previously accomplished retreats under his direction.<\/p>\n<p>From childhood, Gendun Rinpoche experienced a deep aspiration for spirituality. In accordance with his wishes, <strong>he entered a monastery at seven years old<\/strong>, learned to meditate with great masters, received <strong>major<\/strong> <strong>monastic ordination at seventeen<\/strong>, and carried out the <strong>traditional three-year retreat at twenty-one years old.<\/strong> Following his retreat, he undertook pilgrimages in the holy places of Tibet and Nepal and spent close to thirty years in solitary retreat in Tibet, then Bhutan and India, following a perilous escape from his home country in 1959.<\/p>\n<p>One evening, the 16th Karmapa, following his first trip to the West, invited Lama Gendun Rinpoche to the terrace of his residence in Rumtek, Sikkim.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with Lama Tsony, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=4QdCPSS_NkM&amp;t=16s\">recorded in May 1994<\/a>, Lama Gendun Rinpoche shares the instructions he received from the 16th Karmapa during that meeting, instructions that changed the course of his life.<sup>[2]<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_testimonial admin_label=&#8221;Temoniage 50 ans&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;572720b5-72ac-4a65-9e3f-d9811ed4046d&#8221; body_line_height=&#8221;1.6em&#8221; border_color_all=&#8221;gcid-9b5f26ad-ce0a-4e53-af90-9971f6694090&#8243; border_color_bottom=&#8221;gcid-9b5f26ad-ce0a-4e53-af90-9971f6694090&#8243; locked=&#8221;off&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{%22gcid-9b5f26ad-ce0a-4e53-af90-9971f6694090%22:%91%22quote_icon_color%22,%22border_color_bottom%22,%22border_color_all%22%93}&#8221; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><em>You must go to the West now. There, you should give blessings, empowerments, and Dharma teachings. Once in Europe, you should build a temple, a monastery, and a retreat center, and you should teach the Dharma. You must not limit yourself to a single country but rather spread the Dharma everywhere. Thus, many people may connect to Buddhism and develop trust in it. The time is ripe, and it is necessary to act at the right moment. Individuals have strong emotions, and the situation can change rapidly. We are giving people the opportunity to understand their emotions, to distinguish between positive and negative, allowing them to act in a beneficial way. [..] It is extremely important to accomplish the benefit of beings and bring the Dharma everywhere. If we succeed, suffering will be minimized.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_testimonial][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; custom_css_free_form=&#8221;img.inline-zoom {|| transition: transform 0.3s ease;|| display: inline-block;|| vertical-align: middle;|| max-width: 100%;||}||||img.inline-zoom:hover {|| transform: scale(2);|| z-index: 10;||}&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>Lama Gendun Rinpoche recalled that he was speechless. \u201c<em>Why me? I am an old man, and the Karmapa gave me so many responsibilities. I couldn\u2019t imagine how it would be possible.<\/em>\u201d Karmapa read his thoughts,<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>The time is ripe and you have the right karma. You could accomplish everything. Trust me. I am Karmapa.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>His Holiness blessed him and conferred upon him all of the transmission and blessing of the lineage, making him a holder of this lineage. \u201cIt still brings tears to my eyes today,\u201d said Rinpoche.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-329642  alignleft inline-zoom\" src=\"https:\/\/dhagpo.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/003_1975.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"201\" height=\"301\">Thus, one day in August 1975, Lama Gendun Rinpoche, then fifty-seven years old, arrived at the dilapidated farm Landrevie accompanied by Lama Purtse. Lama Jigme Rinpoche had been there <a href=\"https:\/\/dhagpo.org\/en\/may-3-1975-lama-jigme-rinpoche-arrives-dhagpo-kagyu-ling\/\">since May of 1975<\/a>. Lama Gendun Rinpoche began to teach\u2014the preliminary practices of Mahamudra; Chenrezig and Amitabha practice, the seven-branch prayer, the <em>paramitas<\/em>, Gampopa\u2019s <em>Precious Garland of the Supreme Path<\/em>, and more.<\/p>\n<p>Little by little people came, stayed, learned, practiced, and began to renovate and build. In 1980, Gendun Rinpoche also began traveling with Lama Jigme Rinpoche to various cities in France, supporting disciples&#8217; <a href=\"https:\/\/dhagpo.org\/en\/march-1-1982-first-urban-center-biarritz\/\">interest in establishing urban centers<\/a> (KTT), where he continued to teach frequently over the years. He also traveled to various European countries, including Germany, the Netherlands, Greece, Italy, Austria, Belgium, and England. At Dhagpo Kagyu Ling, he prepared his disciples for the three-year retreat, giving teachings and empowerments, with a focus on training teachers who could in turn teach the precious Dharma.<\/p>\n<p>As he grew older, he became concerned about the difficulties of establishing retreat centers, until an opportunity arose in the fall of 1983: the sale, in the town of Biollet, of a property belonging to the author and filmmaker Arnaud Desjardins, whose work had significantly contributed to bringing the wisdom of Tibetan masters to the general public.<\/p>\n<p>The place had strong spiritual roots, having already been a center for teaching and meditation founded by Desjardins. The 16th Karmapa had twice given the black crown ceremony there, and Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche and Dudjom Rinpoche had also stayed there.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; custom_css_free_form=&#8221;img.inline-zoom {|| transition: transform 0.3s ease;|| display: inline-block;|| vertical-align: middle;|| max-width: 100%;||}||||img.inline-zoom:hover {|| transform: scale(2);|| z-index: 10;||}&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>The future retreatants quickly set to work preparing the building, and the first traditional retreat of three years, three months, and three days <a href=\"https:\/\/dhagpo.org\/en\/march-17-1984-first-three-year-retreat\/\">began on March 17, 1984<\/a> with fifteen men and five women.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>The purpose of this kind of retreat is to enable us to help others and achieve the true goal of our lives, complete enlightenment. [&#8230;] This retreat is a great help in finding the path to deep meditation, dissolving the egotistical tendencies we have accumulated over eons, and realizing Mahamudra,&#8221; <\/em>explained Lama Gendun<em>.<\/em> <sup>[3]<\/sup><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>With boundless energy and spiritual generosity, Lama Gendun oversaw this retreat and the two that followed, going to the <em>drupkang<\/em> almost every day to give teachings, transmissions, and advice\u2014seeming to know precisely what was going on in everyone&#8217;s mind. A growing number of practitioners expressed the desire to undertake such a retreat, and on this basis, new retreat centers and monasteries for men and women were built. Lama Gendun thus accompanied nearly three hundred retreatants through this learning of the profound methods of Vajrayana. In 1994, the fourth retreat began, which he entrusted to his close disciples while remaining present at their side.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-324869  alignleft inline-zoom\" src=\"https:\/\/dhagpo.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/02_dernier-enseignement-de-Guendune-Rinpoche.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"172\" height=\"274\" \/>Nevertheless, he continued to <a href=\"https:\/\/dhagpo.org\/en\/august-1997-heart-dharma-last-teachings-gendun-rinpoche\/\">teach at Dhagpo Kagyu Ling several times a year until August 1997<\/a>, when, over several days, he taught the essential stages of the Buddhist path and shared its essence, giving spiritual advice to both newcomers and his long-time disciples. For example: \u201cThe feeling of humility, equality, and compassion towards all beings must be the cornerstone of our path.\u201d This would be his last teaching.<\/p>\n<p>Through his example and realization, Lama Gendun Rinpoche inspired generations of practitioners. K\u00fcnzig Shamarpa wrote of him:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>Lama Gendun of Ch\u00f6drak is an accomplished sage who has uprooted attachment to gain and honor as well as ambition. The proof of this is that his spiritual qualities have been praised many times by Buddha Karmapa himself. Nowadays, it is extremely rare to find someone like him, capable of giving personalized practice instructions that meet the needs of each disciple. This, together with his ability to truly transform his disciples through his radiance, is proof of his accomplishment.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: #f7f7f3; font-size: 10px; font-style: inherit; font-variant-ligatures: inherit; font-variant-caps: inherit;\">[4]<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>At the beginning of the Chenrezig course in October 2018, Jigme Rinpoche used the example of Lama Gendun Rinpoche to explain what it means to remain in the uncontrived state of our mind. Here is what he said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>The 16th Karmapa sent Gendun Rinpoche to Europe. Why? So that Europeans could have an example of what it means to accomplish practice, otherwise it is very easy to get caught up in all sorts of imaginary representations and fantasies about it. By sending Gendun Rinpoche here, Karmapa gave us this example to show us that it is possible for a human being to accomplish practice. He also encouraged us, showing us that if we apply practice, it is possible to develop in his image. We can therefore remain in our ordinary samsaric life but at the same time actualize the result of practice. The Karmapa, in the person of Gendun Rinpoche, gave us an example of the goal that a Dharma practitioner can achieve.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Gendun Rinpoche <strong>never returned to India or Tibet<\/strong>. Upon his parinirvana, permission was granted to keep his body at Dhagpo Kundreul Ling and to perform the traditional funeral rituals there for forty-nine days. Then, in an unprecedented move, permission was also granted to cremate him on site and build a funeral stupa, reflecting the exceptional nature of Rinpoche&#8217;s presence. Shamar Rinpoche and Jigme Rinpoche performed the practice and <em>jinsek<\/em> (fire offerings) of Gyalwa Gyamtso, while his Western disciples performed those of Korlo Demchok and Dorje Pamo, allowing everyone to strengthen their connection with him and create the conditions for future blessings.<\/p>\n<p>As Lama Jigme Rinpoche explains:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>Beyond sadness, Rinpoche&#8217;s departure connects us. It connects us to the lineage, to the masters of the past, and it also connects us to each other. This is how it is in the Kagyu lineage, of which we are the heirs\u2014the lama lets us continue on the path alone because we are ready. [&#8230;] It is our turn to follow the example set by the lama and to keep him alive by practicing what he has transmitted to us. Our mind and his will then be inseparable. <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">(Tendrel, no. 45)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Gendun Rinpoche&#8217;s kindness, compassion, simplicity, joy, and laughter\u2014all reflections of his realization\u2014are engraved in the hearts of all practitioners who have had the good fortune to cross his path. Through these qualities, Gendun Rinpoche was able to transmit profound and authentic teachings to many disciples in Europe, without distinction between men and women. The foundations he laid to lead beings to awakening\u2014bringing them understanding and the means to free themselves from suffering\u2014continue to take root, thanks to the activity of the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa Thaye Dorje, K\u00fcnzig Shamarpa, and Jigme Rinpoche. K\u00fcnzig Shamarpa recognized his reincarnation in the person of Gendun Rinchen. Lama Guendune Rinpoch\u00e9 commence \u00e0 enseigner : les pratiques pr\u00e9liminaires du mahamudra, la pratique de Chenrezik, d\u2019Amithaba, la pri\u00e8re \u00e0 sept branches, les <em>paramitas<\/em>, la <em>Pr\u00e9cieuse Guirlande du chemin supr\u00eame<\/em> de Gampopa, etc. Petit \u00e0 petit des gens viennent, restent, apprennent, pratiquent et se mettent \u00e0 r\u00e9nover et construire.<\/p><p>D\u00e8s 1980 Guendune Rinpoch\u00e9 se met aussi \u00e0 voyager avec lama Jigm\u00e9 Rinpoch\u00e9, dans diff\u00e9rentes villes de l\u2019Hexagone, soutenant l\u2019int\u00e9r\u00eat des disciples<a href=\"https:\/\/dhagpo.org\/1-mars-1982-premier-centre-urbain-biarritz\/\"> pour la cr\u00e9ation de centres urbains (KTT)<\/a>, o\u00f9 il continue d\u2019enseigner fr\u00e9quemment au fil des ans. Il se rend \u00e9galement dans diff\u00e9rents pays europ\u00e9ens, en Allemagne, aux Pays Bas, en Gr\u00e8ce, en Italie, en Autriche, en Belgique, en Angleterre. \u00c0 Dhagpo Kagyu Ling, il pr\u00e9pare ses disciples \u00e0 la retraite de trois ans, donnant enseignements et initiations, ayant \u00e0 c\u0153ur de former des enseignants, qui puissent \u00e0 leur tour enseigner le pr\u00e9cieux Dharma.<\/p><p>Avan\u00e7ant en \u00e2ge, il s\u2019inqui\u00e8te des difficult\u00e9s \u00e0 \u00e9tablir des centres de retraite, jusqu\u2019\u00e0 ce qu\u2019une opportunit\u00e9 se pr\u00e9sente \u00e0 l\u2019automne 1983 : la vente, sur la commune de Biollet, d\u2019une propri\u00e9t\u00e9 de l\u2019auteur et cin\u00e9aste Arnaud Desjardins, dont l\u2019\u0153uvre a sensiblement contribu\u00e9 \u00e0 faire d\u00e9couvrir la sagesse des ma\u00eetres tib\u00e9tains au grand public.<br>Le lieu porte de fortes empreintes spirituelles. D\u00e9j\u00e0, dans ce centre d\u2019enseignement et de m\u00e9ditation fond\u00e9 par A. Desjardins, le XVI\u1d49 Karmapa avait donn\u00e9 \u00e0 deux reprises la c\u00e9r\u00e9monie de la coiffe noire, et Dilgo Khyents\u00e9 Rinpoch\u00e9 et Dudjom Rinpoch\u00e9 y avaient \u00e9galement s\u00e9journ\u00e9.<\/p><p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=\"4.27.4\" _module_preset=\"default\" custom_css_free_form=\"img.inline-zoom {|| transition: transform 0.3s ease;|| display: inline-block;|| vertical-align: middle;|| max-width: 100%;||}||||img.inline-zoom:hover {|| transform: scale(2);|| z-index: 10;||}\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"]<\/p><p>Les futurs retraitants se mettent rapidement \u00e0 l\u2019\u0153uvre pour pr\u00e9parer le b\u00e2timent, et la <a href=\"https:\/\/dhagpo.org\/17-mars-1984-premiere-retraite-trois-ans\/\">premi\u00e8re retraite traditionnelle de trois ans, trois mois et trois jours d\u00e9bute le 17 mars 1984<\/a>, avec quinze hommes et cinq femmes. Lama Guendune explique : <sup>[3]<\/sup><\/p><blockquote><p><em>Le propos de ce genre de retraite est de nous permettre d\u2019aider les autres et d\u2019atteindre le vrai but de notre vie, l\u2019\u00e9veil complet. [\u2026] Cette retraite est d\u2019une grande aide pour trouver la voie vers la m\u00e9ditation profonde, pour dissoudre les tendances \u00e9gotiques que nous avons accumul\u00e9es depuis des \u00e9ons et pour r\u00e9aliser le mahamudra.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote><p>Avec une \u00e9nergie et une g\u00e9n\u00e9rosit\u00e9 spirituelle sans limites, lama Guendune <strong>assure enti\u00e8rement le suivi de cette retraite<\/strong> <strong>ainsi que des deux suivantes,<\/strong> allant quasiment chaque jour dans le <em>drupkang<\/em> pour donner des enseignements, des transmissions et des conseils, semblant savoir pr\u00e9cis\u00e9ment ce qui se passait dans l\u2019esprit de chacun. Un nombre croissant de pratiquants expriment le souhait d\u2019accomplir une telle retraite, et c\u2019est sur cette base que sont construits de nouveaux centres de retraite et des monast\u00e8res pour hommes et femmes. Lama Guendune accompagne ainsi pr\u00e8s de trois cents retraitants \u00e0 travers cet apprentissage des m\u00e9thodes profondes du vajrayana. Citons par exemple : \u00ab Le sentiment d\u2019humilit\u00e9, d\u2019\u00e9galit\u00e9 et de compassion \u00e0 l\u2019endroit de tous les \u00eatres doit \u00eatre la pierre angulaire de notre chemin. \u00bb Ce sera son dernier enseignement.<\/p><p>Par son exemple et sa r\u00e9alisation, lama Guendune Rinpoch\u00e9 a inspir\u00e9 des g\u00e9n\u00e9rations de pratiquants. <strong>K\u00fcnzik Shamarpa \u00e9crit \u00e0 son sujet :<\/strong><\/p><blockquote><p><em>Lama Guendune de Ch\u00f6drak est un sage accompli qui a d\u00e9racin\u00e9 l\u2019attachement aux gains et honneurs ainsi que l\u2019ambition. La preuve en est que ses qualit\u00e9s spirituelles ont \u00e9t\u00e9 maintes fois lou\u00e9es par le Bouddha Karmapa lui-m\u00eame.[4] De nos jours, il est extr\u00eamement rare de trouver quelqu\u2019un comme lui, \u00e0 m\u00eame de donner des instructions de pratique personnalis\u00e9es qui r\u00e9pondent aux besoins de chaque disciple. Ceci, conjointement \u00e0 la capacit\u00e9 de v\u00e9ritablement transformer ses disciples par son rayonnement, \u00e9tablit la preuve de son accomplissement. <sup>[4]<\/sup><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote><p>Au d\u00e9but du cursus Chenrezik<strong> en octobre 2018, Jigm\u00e9 Rinpoch\u00e9 prend l\u2019exemple de lama Guendune Rinpoch\u00e9<\/strong> pour expliquer ce que signifie demeurer dans l\u2019\u00e9tat non fabriqu\u00e9 de notre esprit. Voici ce qu\u2019il dit :<\/p><blockquote><p><em>Le XVI<sup>e<\/sup> Karmapa a envoy\u00e9 Guendune Rinpoch\u00e9 en Europe, pourquoi ? Pour que les Europ\u00e9ens puissent avoir un exemple de ce que signifie l\u2019accomplissement de la pratique, sinon il est tr\u00e8s facile de partir dans tout un tas de repr\u00e9sentations imaginaires, de fantaisies \u00e0 ce propos. En envoyant ici Guendune Rinpoch\u00e9, Karmapa nous a donn\u00e9 cet exemple pour nous montrer qu\u2019il est possible qu\u2019un \u00eatre humain accomplisse la pratique. Il nous encourageait \u00e9galement, c\u2019est-\u00e0-dire qu\u2019il nous montrait que si l\u2019on applique la pratique, il est possible de se d\u00e9velopper \u00e0 son image. On peut donc demeurer dans notre vie samsarique ordinaire mais en m\u00eame temps actualiser le r\u00e9sultat de la pratique. Le Karmapa, en la personne de Guendune Rinpoch\u00e9, nous a donn\u00e9 l\u2019exemple du but qu\u2019un pratiquant du Dharma peut accomplir.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote><p>Guendune Rinpoch\u00e9<strong> ne retournera jamais en Inde, ni au Tibet.<\/strong> \u00c0 son parinirvana, l\u2019autorisation est obtenue de conserver son corps \u00e0 Dhagpo Kundreul Ling et d\u2019y accomplir les rituels fun\u00e9raires traditionnels pendant quarante-neuf jours. Puis, fait sans pr\u00e9c\u00e9dent, l\u2019autorisation de proc\u00e9der \u00e0 la cr\u00e9mation sur place, avec la construction d\u2019un stoupa fun\u00e9raire, est \u00e9galement donn\u00e9e, ce qui t\u00e9moigne du caract\u00e8re exceptionnel de la pr\u00e9sence de Rinpoch\u00e9. Shamar Rinpoch\u00e9 et Jigm\u00e9 Rinpoch\u00e9 accomplissent la pratique et le jinsek (offrandes au feu) de Gyalwa Gyamtso, tandis que ses disciples occidentaux accomplissent celles de Korlo Demchok et Dorj\u00e9 Pamo, permettant \u00e0 chacun de renforcer son lien avec lui et de cr\u00e9er les conditions pour des b\u00e9n\u00e9dictions futures.<br>Comme l\u2019explique lama Jigm\u00e9 Rinpoch\u00e9 :<\/p><blockquote><p><em>Au-del\u00e0 de la tristesse, le d\u00e9part de Rinpoch\u00e9 nous relie. Il nous relie \u00e0 la lign\u00e9e, aux ma\u00eetres du pass\u00e9, il nous relie \u00e9galement les uns aux autres. C\u2019est ainsi que cela se passe dans la lign\u00e9e kagy\u00fc, dont nous sommes les h\u00e9ritiers : le lama nous laisse continuer le chemin seuls parce que nous sommes pr\u00eats. [\u2026] C\u2019est \u00e0 notre tour de suivre l\u2019exemple laiss\u00e9 par le lama et de continuer \u00e0 le faire vivre dans la pratique de ce qu\u2019il nous a transmis.
