The&nbsp;<em>mahaparinirvana<\/em>&nbsp;of eminent beings like the Karmapa escapes our immature understanding veiled by various obscurations. Let us thus listen to the words of another eminent being on this subject\u2014words free from confusion\u2014those of the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.karmapa.org\/karma-kagyu\/lives\/14th-shamarpa-mipham-chokyi-lodro\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Red Crown Karmapa, Mipham Ch\u00f6kyi Lodr\u00f6, His Holiness the 14th K\u00fcnzig Shamarpa.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In 1982, K\u00fcnzig Shamarpa wrote&nbsp;<em>The Garland of White Lotuses<\/em>:&nbsp;<em>Praise in Verse Form Narrating the Account of Liberation of the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa<\/em>&nbsp;(\u0f40\u0f62\u0fa8\u0f0b\u0f54\u0f0b\u0f56\u0f45\u0f74\u0f0b\u0f51\u0fb2\u0f74\u0f42\u0f0b\u0f54\u0f0b\u0f62\u0f72\u0f42\u0f0b\u0f54\u0f60\u0f72\u0f0b\u0f62\u0fa1\u0f7c\u0f0b\u0f62\u0f97\u0f7a\u0f60\u0f72\u0f0b\u0f66\u0f90\u0f74\u0f0b\u0f5a\u0f7a\u0f60\u0f72\u0f0b\u0f62\u0fa3\u0f58\u0f0b\u0f50\u0f62\u0f0b\u0f63\u0f0b\u0f56\u0f66\u0f9f\u0f7c\u0f51\u0f0b\u0f54\u0f0b\u0f5a\u0f72\u0f42\u0f0b\u0f66\u0f74\u0f0b\u0f56\u0f45\u0f51\u0f0b\u0f54\u0f0b\u0f40\u0f74\u0f53\u0fa1\u0f60\u0f72\u0f0b\u0f55\u0fb2\u0f7a\u0f44\u0f0b\u0f56\u0f0d), which he complemented with an explanatory commentary in 2012,&nbsp;<em>The Fragrance of White Lotuses<\/em>&nbsp;(\u0f40\u0f74\u0f53\u0fa1\u0f60\u0f72\u0f0b\u0f51\u0fb2\u0f72\u0f0b\u0f56\u0f66\u0f74\u0f44\u0f0b\u0f0d). In a traditional style of Tibetan poetry that reveals his full literary mastery, Shamarpa relates the essence of the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa\u2019s life, from his manifestation up through the abandonment of this body of emanation.<\/p>\n<p>The 16th Karmapa had evoked his imminent departure on multiple occasions, as expressed in <strong>Stanza 40.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_testimonial admin_label=&#8221;Stance 40&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;572720b5-72ac-4a65-9e3f-d9811ed4046d&#8221; body_line_height=&#8221;1.6em&#8221; border_color_all=&#8221;gcid-9b5f26ad-ce0a-4e53-af90-9971f6694090&#8243; border_color_bottom=&#8221;gcid-9b5f26ad-ce0a-4e53-af90-9971f6694090&#8243; locked=&#8221;off&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{%22gcid-9b5f26ad-ce0a-4e53-af90-9971f6694090%22:%91%22quote_icon_color%22,%22border_color_bottom%22,%22border_color_all%22%93}&#8221; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>In a teasing manner, [Gyalwa Karmapa] sometimes said<\/em><br \/><em>That he would soon leave behind this formal body<\/em><br \/><em>To take care of his future disciples.<\/em><br \/><em>It would be the final act he gave us to see.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_testimonial][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;\u00e9nonce ainsi aux stances 41 et 42 :&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; custom_css_free_form=&#8221;img.inline-zoom {|| transition: transform 0.3s ease;|| display: inline-block;|| vertical-align: middle;|| max-width: 100%;||}||||img.inline-zoom:hover {|| transform: scale(2);|| z-index: 10;||}&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>Shamarpa explains in his commentary that beginning in 1976 Karmapa announced to several renowned teachers such as Adro Rinpoche and His Holiness Drukchen Rinpoche that <strong>he would not live much longer<\/strong> and would soon leave for a new field of activity.<\/p>\n<p>What we commonly call \u201cillness,\u201d and which is accompanied by physical and mental suffering\u2014the seal of suffering of a human existence\u2014is described and experienced in a much different way here by the&nbsp;<em>nirmanakaya<\/em>&nbsp;of a buddha.<\/p>\n<p>Shamarpa states as much in <strong>Stanzas 41 and 42.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_testimonial admin_label=&#8221;Stance 40 , 42&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;572720b5-72ac-4a65-9e3f-d9811ed4046d&#8221; body_line_height=&#8221;1.6em&#8221; border_color_all=&#8221;gcid-9b5f26ad-ce0a-4e53-af90-9971f6694090&#8243; border_color_bottom=&#8221;gcid-9b5f26ad-ce0a-4e53-af90-9971f6694090&#8243; locked=&#8221;off&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{%22gcid-9b5f26ad-ce0a-4e53-af90-9971f6694090%22:%91%22quote_icon_color%22,%22border_color_bottom%22,%22border_color_all%22%93}&#8221; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>In order to take the suffering of others<\/em><em><br \/><\/em><em>And dissipate the nets of grasping at permanence<\/em><em><br \/><\/em><em>Within the dualistic manifestation of disciples of this earth,<\/em><em><br \/><\/em><em>[Gyalwa Karmapa] showed the process of illness.&nbsp;<\/em><em><br \/><\/em><em>Having seen that wellbeing and suffering are illusions,<\/em><em><br \/><\/em><em>His aggregates were free of pain.<\/em><em><br \/><\/em><em>He abided with a joyful mind,<\/em><em><br \/><\/em><em>A sign that his experience of happiness was free of all stains.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_testimonial][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;relate dans les stances 43 et 44 :&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; custom_css_free_form=&#8221;img.inline-zoom {|| transition: transform 0.3s ease;|| display: inline-block;|| vertical-align: middle;|| max-width: 100%;||}||||img.inline-zoom:hover {|| transform: scale(2);|| z-index: 10;||}&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>Over the course of the 16th Karmapa\u2019s long illness, during which he underwent various surgeries and painful treatments, both doctors\u2014Cartesian thinkers and hardened scientists\u2014and Karmapa\u2019s close entourage, including Sop\u00f6n Ts\u00fcltrim Namgyal and Lama Jigme Rinpoche, <strong>witnessed the extraordinary relaxedness of this uncommon being,<\/strong> who was more concerned with the aches and difficulties of his caregivers than his own state and refused all pain medication. Shamarpa explains in his commentary of these lines.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cAt that time, Karmapa must have experienced unbearable pain, but he could sleep soundly. He didn\u2019t want to take any pain medication. The doctors were dumbfounded. They began to have true confidence [in him]. [&#8230;] From the outside, it seemed as though Karmapa was sleeping, but in reality, he was abiding in the [dimension] of clarity-luminosity, experiencing no physical pain. When a change occurs at the level of the basis-for-all consciousness from which arises the sixfold collection [of consciousnesses], [the individual] then abides in the clarity-luminosity [of their mind]. Due to this, the experience of the six sense objects such as visible phenomena, sounds, etc. and their six respective consciousnesses thus changes to become [that] of dharmata. Concerning his sensations when he was awake, the phase of meditative absorption was not mixed with post-meditation. That same night, he had the following dream,<\/p>\n<p><em>In the sky, amidst a sea of white clouds, Rigpe Dorje appeared in the form of a stupa. He floated about a meter above my head. I began to progressively recite praise to the protector Bernagchen,<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Within&nbsp;<\/em><em>dharmadhatu<\/em><em>,<br \/>The wisdom protector and his entourage approach,<br \/>Consider me,<br \/>And grant their blessing.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>While I sang the lines of receiving accomplishments, at that moment, the voice of the supreme Gyalwang\u2014free of all confusion\u2014 addressed me with these words, \u201cYou have accumulated immense abundance throughout these eons.\u201d I listened, and he repeated these words once more. I thought to myself that this abundance referred to an immense accumulation [of merit] over the course of eons. Then, his body dissolved as though absorbed by the clouds, and I awoke to the ringing of the telephone. My brother Jigme shared the news of [Gyalwa Karmapa\u2019s] passing. The doctors said that the machines showed that his heart had stopped. I looked at the time. It was 3:02 a.m. It must have been 3:00 when he passed, the eighth day of the ninth month of the Tibetan calendar, in Belgium.
