Praise and Commentary of the Account of Liberation of the Glorious 16th Gyalwa Karmapa, Rigpe Dorje<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p><\/div><\/p>\n

November 5, 1981, Rangjung Rigpe Dorje, His Holiness the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa<\/a> left his physical body at the American International Hospital of Zion in Chicago in the United States. The mahaparinirvana<\/em> of eminent beings like the Karmapa escapes our immature understanding veiled by various obscurations. Let us thus listen to the words of another eminent being on this subject\u2014words free from confusion\u2014those of the Red Crown Karmapa, Mipham Ch\u00f6kyi Lodr\u00f6, His Holiness the 14th K\u00fcnzig Shamarpa.<\/a><\/p>\n

In 1982, K\u00fcnzig Shamarpa wrote The Garland of White Lotuses<\/em>: Praise in Verse Form Narrating the Account of Liberation of the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa<\/em> (\u0f40\u0f62\u0fa8\u0f0b\u0f54\u0f0b\u0f56\u0f45\u0f74\u0f0b\u0f51\u0fb2\u0f74\u0f42\u0f0b\u0f54\u0f0b\u0f62\u0f72\u0f42\u0f0b\u0f54\u0f60\u0f72\u0f0b\u0f62\u0fa1\u0f7c\u0f0b\u0f62\u0f97\u0f7a\u0f60\u0f72\u0f0b\u0f66\u0f90\u0f74\u0f0b\u0f5a\u0f7a\u0f60\u0f72\u0f0b\u0f62\u0fa3\u0f58\u0f0b\u0f50\u0f62\u0f0b\u0f63\u0f0b\u0f56\u0f66\u0f9f\u0f7c\u0f51\u0f0b\u0f54\u0f0b\u0f5a\u0f72\u0f42\u0f0b\u0f66\u0f74\u0f0b\u0f56\u0f45\u0f51\u0f0b\u0f54\u0f0b\u0f40\u0f74\u0f53\u0fa1\u0f60\u0f72\u0f0b\u0f55\u0fb2\u0f7a\u0f44\u0f0b\u0f56\u0f0d), which he complemented with an explanatory commentary in 2012, The Fragrance of White Lotuses<\/em> (\u0f40\u0f74\u0f53\u0fa1\u0f60\u0f72\u0f0b\u0f51\u0fb2\u0f72\u0f0b\u0f56\u0f66\u0f74\u0f44\u0f0b\u0f0d). In a traditional style of Tibetan poetry that reveals his full literary mastery, Shamarpa relates the essence of the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa\u2019s life, from his manifestation up through the abandonment of this body of emanation.<\/p>\n

The 16th Karmapa had evoked his imminent departure on multiple occasions, as expressed in Stanza 40.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In a teasing manner, [Gyalwa Karmapa] sometimes said<\/em>
That he would soon leave behind this formal body<\/em>
To take care of his future disciples.<\/em>
It would be the final act he gave us to see.<\/em><\/p>\n

Shamarpa explains in his commentary that beginning in 1976 Karmapa announced to several renowned teachers such as Adro Rinpoche and His Holiness Drukchen Rinpoche that he would not live much longer<\/strong> and would soon leave for a new field of activity.<\/p>\n

What we commonly call \u201cillness,\u201d and which is accompanied by physical and mental suffering\u2014the seal of suffering of a human existence\u2014is described and experienced in a much different way here by the nirmanakaya<\/em> of a buddha.<\/p>\n

Shamarpa states as much in Stanzas 41 and 42.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In order to take the suffering of others<\/em>
<\/em>And dissipate the nets of grasping at permanence<\/em>
<\/em>Within the dualistic manifestation of disciples of this earth,<\/em>
<\/em>[Gyalwa Karmapa] showed the process of illness. <\/em>
<\/em>Having seen that wellbeing and suffering are illusions,<\/em>
<\/em>His aggregates were free of pain.<\/em>
<\/em>He abided with a joyful mind,<\/em>
<\/em>A sign that his experience of happiness was free of all stains.<\/em><\/p>\n

Over the course of the 16th Karmapa\u2019s long illness, during which he underwent various surgeries and painful treatments, both doctors\u2014Cartesian thinkers and hardened scientists\u2014and Karmapa\u2019s close entourage, including Sop\u00f6n Ts\u00fcltrim Namgyal and Lama Jigme Rinpoche, witnessed the extraordinary relaxedness of this uncommon being,<\/strong> who was more concerned with the aches and difficulties of his caregivers than his own state and refused all pain medication. Shamarpa explains in his commentary of these lines.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt that time, Karmapa must have experienced unbearable pain, but he could sleep soundly. He didn\u2019t want to take any pain medication. The doctors were dumbfounded. They began to have true confidence [in him]. […] From the outside, it seemed as though Karmapa was sleeping, but in reality, he was abiding in the [dimension] of clarity-luminosity, experiencing no physical pain. When a change occurs at the level of the basis-for-all consciousness from which arises the sixfold collection [of consciousnesses], [the individual] then abides in the clarity-luminosity [of their mind]. Due to this, the experience of the six sense objects such as visible phenomena, sounds, etc. and their six respective consciousnesses thus changes to become [that] of dharmata. Concerning his sensations when he was awake, the phase of meditative absorption was not mixed with post-meditation. In post-meditation, dualistic appearances were experienced as illusions.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Following various fruitless attempts at treatment, Karmapa left his body for pure lands on November 5, 1981,<\/strong> as Shamarpa recounts in Stanzas 43 and 44.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In the West, surrounded by many disciples,
[Gyalwa Karmapa] departed to the absolute dimension.<\/em><\/p>\n

Shamarpa explains in his commentary of these stanzas that at the moment of Gyalwa Karmapa\u2019s departure, he himself was in Belgium. That same night, he had the following dream,<\/p>\n

In the sky, amidst a sea of white clouds, Rigpe Dorje appeared in the form of a stupa. He floated about a meter above my head. I began to progressively recite praise to the protector Bernagchen,<\/em><\/p>\n

Within <\/em>dharmadhatu<\/em>,
The wisdom protector and his entourage approach,
Consider me,
And grant their blessing.<\/em><\/p>\n

While I sang the lines of receiving accomplishments, at that moment, the voice of the supreme Gyalwang\u2014free of all confusion\u2014 addressed me with these words, \u201cYou have accumulated immense abundance throughout these eons.\u201d I listened, and he repeated these words once more. I thought to myself that this abundance referred to an immense accumulation [of merit] over the course of eons. Then, his body dissolved as though absorbed by the clouds, and I awoke to the ringing of the telephone. My brother Jigme shared the news of [Gyalwa Karmapa\u2019s] passing. The doctors said that the machines showed that his heart had stopped. I looked at the time. It was 3:02 a.m. It must have been 3:00 when he passed, the eighth day of the ninth month of the Tibetan calendar, in Belgium. It must have been 8:00 p.m. in Chicago, the seventh day.<\/em><\/p>\n

The 16th Gyalwa Karmapa left his body November 5, 1981. 
<\/em><\/p>\n

Of all footprints,
That of the elephant\u2019s footprint is supreme.
Of all perceptions,
That of impermanence is the supreme perception.
Of all visions,
The pure vision of a noble being\u2019s nirvana seen in a dream is the supreme vision.<\/em><\/p>\n

Au cours de la longue maladie du XVI\u1d49<\/sup>\u00a0Karmapa, lui imposant diff\u00e9rentes op\u00e9rations chirurgicales et des traitements douloureux, tant les m\u00e9decins \u2013 cart\u00e9siens et scientifiques convaincus \u2013 que l\u2019entourage proche de Karmapa, comme Sop\u00f6n Ts\u00fcltrim Namgyal ou encore lama Jigm\u00e9 Rinpoch\u00e9 ont \u00e9t\u00e9 t\u00e9moins de l\u2019extraordinaire d\u00e9tente de cet \u00eatre hors du commun<\/strong>, qui se souciait davantage des peines et maux du personnel soignant que de son propre \u00e9tat et refusait tout traitement contre la douleur.<\/p>

Dans son commentaire des vers ci-dessus Shamarpa explique\u00a0:<\/p>

\u00c0 ce moment, Karmapa devait \u00e9prouver des douleurs insupportables, mais il pouvait dormir sans interruption\u00a0; il ne voulait prendre aucun anti-douleur. Les m\u00e9decins \u00e9taient stup\u00e9faits\u00a0; ils commenc\u00e8rent \u00e0 avoir une v\u00e9ritable confiance [envers lui]. [\u2026] De l\u2019ext\u00e9rieur, il semblait que Karmapa dormait, mais en r\u00e9alit\u00e9, il demeurait dans la [dimension] de clart\u00e9-luminosit\u00e9, n\u2019\u00e9prouvant ainsi aucune douleur physique. <\/em><\/p>

Lorsqu\u2019un changement s\u2019est op\u00e9r\u00e9 au niveau de la [conscience] base-de-tout depuis laquelle s\u2019\u00e9l\u00e8ve le sextuple rassemblement [de consciences], [l\u2019individu] demeure alors dans la clart\u00e9-luminosit\u00e9 [de son esprit]. De ce fait, l\u2019exp\u00e9rience des six objets des sens comme le visible, les sons, etc. et de leurs consciences respectives change donc pour devenir [celle] du\u00a0<\/em>dharmata.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>

Quant \u00e0 ses sensations quand il \u00e9tait r\u00e9veill\u00e9, la phase d\u2019absorption m\u00e9ditative n\u2019\u00e9tait pas m\u00eal\u00e9e \u00e0 celle de post-m\u00e9ditation\u00a0; en post-m\u00e9ditation, les apparences duelles \u00e9taient \u00e9prouv\u00e9es comme des illusions.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>

Apr\u00e8s diff\u00e9rentes tentatives de traitements infructueuses, le 5 novembre 1981, Karmapa quitte son corps<\/strong> pour les champs purs, comme Shamarpa le relate dans les stances 43 et 44\u00a0:<\/strong><\/p>

Alors que je chantais les vers de r\u00e9ception des accomplissements, \u00e0 ce moment, la voix du supr\u00eame Gyalwang, d\u00e9nu\u00e9e de toute confusion, s\u2019est adress\u00e9e \u00e0 moi en ces termes\u00a0: \u201cTu as accumul\u00e9 une immense abondance pendant des \u00e9ons\u201d. Je l\u2019ai \u00e9cout\u00e9 et il a r\u00e9p\u00e9t\u00e9 ces mots encore une fois. Je me suis dit que cette abondance faisait r\u00e9f\u00e9rence \u00e0 une immense accumulation [de m\u00e9rites] pendant des \u00e9ons. Son corps s\u2019est ensuite dissout<\/em>\u00a0, comme absorb\u00e9 par les nuages et je me suis r\u00e9veill\u00e9 au son du t\u00e9l\u00e9phone. Mon fr\u00e8re Jigm\u00e9 m\u2019annon\u00e7ait le d\u00e9part de [Gyalwa Karmapa]. Les m\u00e9decins ont dit que son c\u0153ur s\u2019est arr\u00eat\u00e9, comme indiqu\u00e9 par les machines. J\u2019ai regard\u00e9 l\u2019heure, il \u00e9tait 3 h 02 du matin, il devait \u00eatre 3 h quand il est d\u00e9c\u00e9d\u00e9, le huiti\u00e8me jour du neuvi\u00e8me mois du calendrier tib\u00e9tain en Belgique. Il devait \u00eatre 20 h \u00e0 Chicago, le septi\u00e8me jour.
