This multi-award-winning documentary recounts the life and legacy of the 16th Karmapa Rangjung Rigpe Dorje and his student Ole Nydahl. Lama Jigme Rinpoche was a key adviser on the project from the very beginning, providing detailed guidance all along.<\/p>\n

Lama Jigme Rinpoche and the film\u2019s director will be present at the preview on November 4 in Paris.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Ahead of the launch, M\u00e1rta Gy\u00f6rgy Kessler, the film\u2019s director, spent a few days at Dhagpo Kagyu Ling, and took some time to share her insights.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s definitely special! France is such an important part of the history: the 16th Karmapa established Dhagpo Kagyu Ling here<\/a> when he first came and asked Lama Jigme Rinpoche to stay on. We also filmed here at Dhagpo and in the surrounding area where the16th Karmapa conducted pujas.<\/p>\n

Plus we interviewed Jigme Rinpoche and Trinlay Rinpoche. It\u2019s all part of the story of how the 16th Karmapa\u2019s teaching and vision came to the West and continues to this day.<\/a> Furthermore, we had access in France to footage filmed by Arnaud Desjardins[2]. He was one of the first to film the 16th Karmapa in the 1960s in Sikkim after his escape from Tibet, and took amazing shots that we used in the film.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Lama Jigme Rinpoche<\/strong> is a very key participant<\/strong> in this project. His support at so many levels has been very strong and very precious all along. I’m really so appreciative. From the start, he agreed to be the main advisor on all aspects of the 16th Karmapa\u2019s life, and anything related to Tibetan Buddhism and the Karma Kagyu lineage. He shared his vision about the film and gave us advice on the structure of the story line. I met him many times \u2013 I don\u2019t even know how often! He was always available to give advice on so many different details, and this was really very precious.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

He also gave me a copy of Shamar Rinpoche\u2019s book on the life story of the 16th Karmapa which only exists in Tibetan and that we had translated. He saw different cuts of the film while we worked on it.<\/p>\n

Making such a film is a process, with a lot of research involved. Many questions come up along the way. As we developed the storyline, I came back to consult Rinpoche on many aspects \u2013 on which sources to use, which images, who to interview, what to include or not to include.<\/p>\n

He also looked at all the animations in the film. He was very precise \u2013 for example indicating exactly how the 16th Karmapa\u2019s room should be or he would send me pictures on how different aspects of Tibet should be shown. My favorite story was when the film was in the very final stages. At one point he was laughing and said \u201cThe ear of the horse doesn\u2019t look like that!\u201d It was so funny. So sometimes when we thought we were done, it was not the case!<\/p>\n

Another aspect is that when I worked on the film about Hannah [3]<\/sup>, I was looking for footage about the 16th Karmapa. I asked Jigme Rinpoche if he knew someone who might have this. He replied, \u201cI have something in my storage.\u201d In fact there were five boxes of 8 mm footage film. \u201cSomeone gave the 16th Karmapa a film camera as a gift in the mid-1960s. I took it and was filming,\u201d he told me. Rinpoche gave me these five boxes, which I took to London and had digitalized. We used some of the material in the Hannah film but a lot in this one. It is an absolute treasure \u2013 from Rumtek, America when he was travelling with the 16th Karmapa and other places. So when I introduce Jigme Rinpoche, I also introduce him as a cameraman!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

In March 2026, the film was shown at Karmapa International Buddhist Institute (KIBI) in presence of the 17th Karmapa. Was His Holiness consulted during the making of the film and what did he share with you after seeing it ?<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

I met Kamapa before we started to edit as well as during the production process. I presented him the project as well as a list of people who we planned to interview. He was so kind, giving comments and going through the content. He suggested several more interviews to do, including with Khenpo Ch\u00f6drak Rinpoche. He also said it would be good that we film in Bhutan and suggested whom to interview. I went to KIBI before we finished the edit and gave it to him, he watched it, gave a bit of feedback and he was very happy with it.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Viewing this was going down memory lane of sorts, it\u2019s a beautiful continuity of the late Hannah\u2019s story.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Through these two works, one gets to have a glimpse of the living Buddhas via this digital means. […]<\/p>\n

I particularly loved the footage of my teacher, His Holiness the late Kunzig Shamar Rinpoche, and I wish there was more of it. <\/em><\/p>\n

Every time I hear his recitation of the pure-land prayers, it moves me deeply, almost to tears. Maybe no one really recognizes it, or maybe some of you do, but I personally feel that it\u2019s always possible to see the non-different aspect of him and the 16th<\/span> Karmapa.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

I think that everybody is touched in a different way, which is good. Those with a little interest in Tibet or in Buddhism often tell us how interesting they find the stories of people portrayed in the film. Sometimes it\u2019s just a feeling. In Australia, I was invited to an exchange with people belonging to a school of Chinese Buddhism. and were really inspired by the story.<\/div>\n

The same goes for people from other schools of Tibetan Buddhism who have come to see the film. I\u2019m always proud when young people are excited about the film and give their feedback. I think people are touched because it\u2019s a life story. It\u2019s not just about one person, but about many lamas who appear throughout the film. I think these examples stay with people, it\u2019s the emotional part.<\/div>\n

I hope the film moves many people. Since we are all unique, different things resonate with each of us, so I think everyone should find their own message in the film. What stands out most for me is the powerful presence of the great 16th Karmapa, his vision of bringing Buddhism around the world, and the idealism and devotion of his Western students, Lama Ole and Hannah Nydahl. In fact, Buddhist practitioners have mentioned that watching it made them feel truly closer to the Karmapa. I hope the film sparks curiosity about Buddhism and encourages people to explore it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

[1]<\/span> French author and filmmaker (1925-2011) who introduced the general public to the wisdom of Tibetan masters. In 1983, he offered very favourable conditions for Dhagpo to acquire his property in Le Bost (Auvergne) where the 16th Karmapa had given the Black Crown ceremony. The future site of Dhagpo Kundreul Ling housed the first three-year traditional retreat the same year.<\/span> https:\/\/dhagpo.org\/en\/march-17-1984-first-three-year-retreat\/<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n

Je lui en suis vraiment tr\u00e8s reconnaissante. D\u00e8s le d\u00e9but, il a accept\u00e9 d\u2019\u00eatre le principal conseiller<\/strong> sur tous les aspects de la vie du XVIe<\/sup> Karmapa, ainsi que sur tout ce qui concerne le Tibet et la lign\u00e9e karma kagyu. Il nous a fait part de sa vision du film et nous a donn\u00e9 des conseils sur la structure du sc\u00e9nario ainsi que sur les \u00e9l\u00e9ments importants \u00e0 mettre en avant pour pr\u00e9senter le Karmapa. D\u00e8s lors, je l\u2019ai rencontr\u00e9 \u00e0 de nombreuses reprises \u2013 je ne sais m\u00eame plus combien de fois ! Il m\u2019a \u00e9galement remis un exemplaire du livre de Shamar Rinpoch\u00e9 sur la vie du XVIe<\/sup> Karmapa, qui n\u2019existe qu\u2019en tib\u00e9tain et que nous avions fait traduire. Il a visionn\u00e9 plusieurs versions du film lorsque nous y travaillions.<\/p>

R\u00e9aliser un tel film est tout un processus qui n\u00e9cessite beaucoup de recherches. De nombreuses questions surgissent en cours de route. Au fur et \u00e0 mesure que nous d\u00e9veloppions le sc\u00e9nario, je revenais consulter Rinpoch\u00e9 sur de nombreux aspects : quelles sources utiliser, quelles images choisir, qui interviewer, ce qu\u2019il fallait inclure ou non.<\/p>[caption id=\"attachment_346291\" align=\"alignleft\" width=\"312\"]\"\"<\/a> Lama Jigm\u00e9 Rinpoch\u00e9 en action avec la cam\u00e9ra offerte au XVIe Karmapa \u00e0 l'\u00e9paule[\/caption]

Il a \u00e9galement pass\u00e9 en revue toutes les animations du film. Il \u00e9tait tr\u00e8s pr\u00e9cis : par exemple, il indiquait exactement \u00e0 quoi devait ressembler la chambre du XVIe<\/sup> Karmapa, ou bien il m\u2019envoyait des photos montrant comment diff\u00e9rents aspects du Tibet devaient \u00eatre repr\u00e9sent\u00e9s. Mon anecdote pr\u00e9f\u00e9r\u00e9e remonte \u00e0 la toute fin du tournage. \u00c0 un moment donn\u00e9, il a \u00e9clat\u00e9 de rire en disant : \u00ab L\u2019oreille du cheval ne ressemble pas \u00e0 \u00e7a ! \u00bb C\u2019\u00e9tait tellement dr\u00f4le. Ainsi, parfois, alors que nous pensions avoir termin\u00e9, ce n\u2019\u00e9tait pas le cas !<\/p>

Par ailleurs, lorsque je travaillais sur le film consacr\u00e9 \u00e0 Hannah [2]<\/a><\/sup>, je cherchais des images du XVIe<\/sup> Karmapa. J\u2019ai demand\u00e9 \u00e0 Jigm\u00e9 Rinpoch\u00e9 s\u2019il connaissait quelqu\u2019un qui pourrait en poss\u00e9der. Il m\u2019a r\u00e9pondu : \u00ab J\u2019ai quelque chose dans ma r\u00e9serve. \u00bb En fait, il y avait cinq bo\u00eetes de bobines de films 8 mm. \u00ab Quelqu\u2019un avait offert une cam\u00e9ra au XVIe<\/sup> Karmapa au milieu des ann\u00e9es 1960. Je l\u2019avais prise et je filmais \u00bb, m\u2019a-t-il expliqu\u00e9. Rinpoch\u00e9 m\u2019a donn\u00e9 ces cinq bo\u00eetes, que j\u2019ai emport\u00e9es \u00e0 Londres pour les faire num\u00e9riser. Nous avons utilis\u00e9 une partie de ces images dans le film Hannah<\/em>, mais une grande partie dans celui-ci. C\u2019est un v\u00e9ritable tr\u00e9sor : des images tourn\u00e9es \u00e0 Rumtek, aux \u00c9tats-Unis lorsqu\u2019il voyageait avec le XVIe<\/sup> Karmapa, et dans d\u2019autres lieux. Ainsi, lorsque je pr\u00e9sente Jigm\u00e9 Rinpoch\u00e9, je le pr\u00e9sente \u00e9galement comme cam\u00e9raman !<\/p><\/div>

J\u2019ai rencontr\u00e9 le Karmapa avant de commencer le montage ainsi que pendant le processus de production. Je lui ai pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 le projet ainsi qu\u2019une liste des personnes que nous avions l\u2019intention d\u2019interviewer. Il s\u2019est montr\u00e9 tr\u00e8s attentif, nous faisant part de ses commentaires et passant en revue le contenu. Il a sugg\u00e9r\u00e9 plusieurs interviews suppl\u00e9mentaires, notamment avec khenpo<\/em> Ch\u00f6drak Rinpoch\u00e9. Il nous a \u00e9galement conseill\u00e9 de tourner au Bhoutan et\u00a0nous a sugg\u00e9r\u00e9 les personnes sur place \u00e0 interviewer. Je me suis rendu au KIBI avant la sortie du film et je le lui ai montr\u00e9. Il en a \u00e9t\u00e9 tr\u00e8s satisfait.<\/p>

J\u2019ai particuli\u00e8rement aim\u00e9 les images de mon ma\u00eetre, Sa Saintet\u00e9 le regrett\u00e9 Kunzig Shamar Rinpoch\u00e9, et j\u2019aurais aim\u00e9 qu\u2019il y en ait davantage. Chaque fois que j\u2019entends sa r\u00e9citation des pri\u00e8res de la Terre Pure, cela me touche profond\u00e9ment, au point de me faire venir les larmes aux yeux. Peut-\u00eatre que personne ne s\u2019en rend vraiment compte, ou peut-\u00eatre que certains d\u2019entre vous le remarquent, mais personnellement, j\u2019ai le sentiment qu\u2019il est toujours possible de percevoir l\u2019aspect non-diff\u00e9rent entre lui et le XVIe<\/sup> Karmapa.<\/p>

Je pense que chacun est touch\u00e9 \u00e0 sa mani\u00e8re, ce qui est une bonne chose. Ceux qui s\u2019int\u00e9ressent un peu au Tibet ou au bouddhisme nous disent souvent \u00e0 quel point ils trouvent int\u00e9ressantes les histoires des personnes pr\u00e9sent\u00e9es dans le film. Parfois, c\u2019est juste une impression, un sentiment.<\/div>
En Australie, j\u2019ai \u00e9t\u00e9 invit\u00e9 \u00e0 un \u00e9change avec des membres d\u2019une \u00e9cole de bouddhisme chinois. Ils ne connaissaient pas grand-chose au bouddhisme tib\u00e9tain et ont \u00e9t\u00e9 vraiment inspir\u00e9s par l\u2019histoire. Il en va de m\u00eame pour les adeptes d\u2019autres \u00e9coles du bouddhisme tib\u00e9tain qui sont venus voir le film. Je suis toujours fier lorsque des jeunes s\u2019enthousiasment pour le film et nous font part de leurs impressions. Je pense que les gens sont touch\u00e9s parce qu\u2019il s\u2019agit d\u2019une histoire de vie. Il ne s\u2019agit pas seulement d\u2019une personne, mais de nombreux lamas qui apparaissent tout au long du film. Je pense que ces exemples marquent les esprits, c\u2019est la dimension \u00e9motionnelle.<\/div>

Ce qui me marque le plus, c\u2019est la pr\u00e9sence puissante du grand XVIe<\/sup> Karmapa, sa vision de porter le bouddhisme \u00e0 travers le monde, ainsi que l\u2019id\u00e9alisme et le d\u00e9vouement de ses disciples occidentaux, Lama Ole et Hannah Nydahl. D\u2019ailleurs, des pratiquants bouddhistes ont d\u00e9clar\u00e9 que le fait de voir ce film les avait v\u00e9ritablement rapproch\u00e9s du Karmapa. J\u2019esp\u00e8re que ce film \u00e9veillera la curiosit\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9gard du bouddhisme et encouragera les gens \u00e0 le d\u00e9couvrir.<\/p><\/div>
