Over the years, the celebration of Losar, Tibetan New Year, has found its place in the Périgord landscape as a moment of openness and sharing. Celebrated on the first day of the year in the Tibetan calendar, Losar is preceded by several days of traditional ceremonies, including the extensive ritual of the wisdom protectors to dispel obstacles and bring together favorable circumstances for the practice of Dharma. This is also the time when the prayer banners—the five-colored flags that spread wishes in all directions—are changed.
As a local newspaper reports in February 1980, “To celebrate this first day of the Tibetan New Year, people had come from everywhere: from Germany, the Paris region…but also from Périgord,” with Tibetan cakes served for all in the early morning. The article refers to the presence of Lama Gendun and Lama Jigme Rinpoche, as well as Tenga Rinpoche,” noting that the day was also an opportunity “to establish friendly ties” between the center’s residents and visitors.
