Gampopa Sönam Rinchen, Dhagpo Lhaje, Monk and Yogi

Gampopa is a central figure in Tibetan Buddhism. He is the father of the Dhagpo Kagyu lineage and the teacher of Düsum Khyenpa, the first Karmapa. Gampopa is particularly known for his teaching that combines the Kadam and Mahamudra traditions, giving the lineage its unique character.

With his dual background as a practitioner and scholar, His Eminence Trungram Gyatrül Rinpoche offers an overview of Gampopa and the distinctive nature of his teachings.

In this year celebrating fifty years of Dhagpo’s development and the Karmapa’s activity in the West, Gyatrül Rinpoche, at the invitation of Lama Jigme Rinpoche, honors us by sharing the fruit of his knowledge rooted in practice. It is a new opportunity to discover our lineage, draw inspiration from what has been accomplished, and pay tribute to the masters who made it possible.

His Eminence Trungram Gyatrül Rinpoche will confer the Milarepa empowerment.

Lama Jampa Thayé

His Eminence Trungram Gyatrül Rinpoche is the fourth Trungram Gyalwa Tulku of the Karma Kagyu lineage. He was recognized by Rangjung Rigpe Dorje, the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa.

He began long studies at Rumtek at a young age and received empowerments and teachings from all the traditions of Tibetan Buddhism. His training in meditative practice was guided by the accomplished practitioner Khenchen Trinley Paljor Rinpoche, with whom he spent nearly his entire life until the latter’s passing. He then acquired advanced university training in Taiwan and the United States, where he received his doctorate in 2004 at Harvard with a thesis on Gampopa. He is fluent in Tibetan, English, Nepalese, Sherpa and Chinese and possesses solid knowledge of Sanskrit, Hindi and French.

His activity unfolds throughout the world through teachings, the creation of centers for Buddhist study, humanitarian associations (Nepal, 2015), a nonreligious center for peace in Lumbini, educational initiatives and more. Through these various activities, Gyatrul Rinpoche promotes wisdom and compassion with a nonsectarian mindset, allying the preservation and modernisation of traditions for a 21st century Buddhism.
